I don't think it's a regulated industry with standards or certifications. Tourists may assume the captain has some of those or at least safety standards in place, but most of these boats will have you sign a release before you ride / parasail with them. That's more assurance for covering their legal bums than protection for you.
I wouldn't warn against it per say. Stories like this seem rare still, few and far between. Plenty of people try this with amazing results. I tried and had a great experience in Turks and Caicos many years ago. Faced my fear of heights on a clear day.
I'd suggest asking the local hotel staff, especially at higher end hotels, which company to go with or which ones have strictest safety standards on board or the best reputation. Many will tell you "Company X has a lot of happy customers but company Z gets more complaints..." Or whatever. Take that to heart. Ask locals who you'd be safe with and exercise caution. If it seems bleak or extra windy or rainy, better to wait it out and try again on a clear day. Don't rely on anyone else to protect your own personal security. Listen to your instincts. If the captain and crew seem rushed, or try to hurry you up for a ride before the weather opens up, then insist you take a rain check or a partial refund. Understand these things happen. Better to lose an opportunity for high flying fun than a life. You can try to parasail some other day but you can't bring yourself back from a risk like this, Heaven forbid.
This is just so sad. I can only imagine how traumatized those young men are. I pray they heal quickly and as completely as possible although I'm sure a part of their hearts will always feel missing. Too sad because this was so preventable. What a shame the captain didn't think clearly about the importance or impact of passenger safety.

Same thing happened to me in Puerta Vallarta. Big gusts of wind keep coming as they were trying to land me right in front of a hotel. They'd speed away and I would launch 50-75 feet up in the air in moments. I held on so tight to the ropes that my hands nearly bled. After 5 or 6 attempts they finally got me safely down. After I landed I was told that they were more cautious because a woman died just the day before because she got slammed into that same hotel as they were trying to land her! I sure wish I would have known that. I feel so grateful that I survived that. A year later I parasailed in Hawaii so I could have a positive experience, and I did. Oh my gosh! What a beautiful mom. How sad. I can’t even imagine. That captain may have chosen to save those in the boat rather than those in the parasail but before that he chose to take tourists for their almighty dollar rather than considering their safety against the weather. After cutting them lose, he had a choice to drive the boat around to save them, or at least radio or cell call emergency services and even a request to do so but decided not to.
That guy cares more about getting his own buttootie out of hot water than theirs safely out of the sky. How horrifying for those boys!

I kept telling my husband I felt like I was falling out. And he thought I was just scared. Right before we came down he looks over at me and says you are not in the seat right! See if you can push yourself up! I did and finally felt secure as we descended. I’m never ever going parasailing again! They did not check to see if I was in properly! I do not trust this activity! I know it may seem like a little extra money, but purchasing your excursions through the cruise ship and therefore getting Royal Caribbean cruise vetted guides (they direct you to the subcontracted company and make sure you get back via the in/out scanners) means you get back safely. You pay extra money to use a company that gets people back alive & insurance in case something goes wrong. (Don’t get me wrong I have a horror story of losing my younger sister in Croatia…nothing is perfect).

I can't even imagine this man's pain and horror seeing his wife, son, and nephew being cut loose in a wind storm, and what they must have been feeling as they blew away, not knowing where or how they would land and what would happen to them. 😢 My deepest condolences to this man and his family, and prayers for the two boys. 🙏❤

I've parasailed several times way back but fortunately with reputable companies that provided safety equipment and weather conditions followed. This so called "Captain" cut the rope then didn't even go try find them in the water!! Probably offering cheap trips with no experience...defo big jail time

All Parasails must now be registered at the DMV. Or your local Police Station. Ropes that can be cut with knife are no longer allowed.
