I have to say that, of all the UA-cam videos I watched about installing a combination switch/outlet, this video was the only one that got me there. I finally got the difference between the hot "line" and the un-hot "load" black wires, the "common" hot side of the receptacle, the need to splice in a connection to the "neutral", etc. The diagram kinda matched what I was seeing with the existing switch. Yes, the video was long and at times overly simplistic (but right for a complete novice as pointed out). The only thing really distracting were the constant interruptions of the ads.
I agree with Bill, great video.
I viewed this video never doing a switch like this and changing a single pole switch to a combo switch. He was very thorough on how and why the wiring goes like it should for this combo switch. Excellent Job he does! I would follow him or ask him questions.
Thanks for the video. This is exactly what I was trying to do. Your instructions were right on. My wife is happy!11
I am glad it helped. paypal donation link in video description.. :)
Thank you for this video. It really helped, and I saved money by not calling an electrician. The least I can do is say thank you, like the video, and subscribe 👍🏼
I find your videos very simple to understand and follow. Not to fast talking hands moving around everywhere were you can't see the wiring itself. And the topper just Drawing it all out. The does and donts. Their wasn't one thing that wasn't helpful and easy to understand. Thank you for the video . please keep up the great work.

finally an explanation that is easy to understand. thank you
Great explanation!! And it worked!!
Thank you for posting this VERY important topic. Having the labels on the hot and the common helped also. Now I know what continuity tester to purchase. I'll feel so much more confident to go ahead with the project. Thanks also for the cute joke at 13.38 because the female in your audience loved it.
thank you female.. x
Thanks Don'tWorry BeHappy for pointing out the joke at 13:38 - it flew past me until you pointed it out :o)
I glad I gave this video a change it was just what I needed that everyone else wouldn't tell me, Thanks!
Thank you!! This is EXACTLY what I needed. You did an amazing job explaining why and how!!
You are so welcome!
Finally understood how it works after watching this. Thanks.
Glad it helped!
Thanks - great job. The few other videos I watched did not explicitly say to add an additional wire to the existing neutral to put on the neutral (silver) screw of the new combo switch. I was thinking that's what I should do, but I wanted to hear or see someone say or do it so that there would be no question of doing the wrong thing. You both said it AND did it, which reassured me to proceed! Thanks very much.
thank you for the kind words
Thank you sir couldn’t have done it without you 🙏🏾
Thanks very much for your detailed explanation and illustration! Like 101 or Step-by-Step ;)
thank you so much for your video. its was tremendously helpful, not too fast, easy to understand.
Your step by step approach resulted in my successful install. thank you
Glad it helped
Simple and clear explanation! Well done
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks 🙏 for the help , you explained clearly
for a diy'er excellent explanation
Hey thanks man, should have seen me, I had no idea this was so simple.
Appreciate your detail. Explained to me what the hot wires means.thanks.
Wisdom is always timeless. thanks you made it very simple and logical
thank you sir
You should have grounded the new outlet... Disconnect the ground on other outlet and make 2 ground pigtails and connect together with wire nut...the proper way....Have to point that out to you......
Thank you for your teaching video- I was able to replace my bathroom switch to the switch with outlet for the dehumidifier as we badly need for the bathroom that has high mildew problem
Glad it helped
great job. I always wondered how you can do the proper conversion. I did it before but without knowing how it works, And I got it working by luck and guessing. science is much better !!! Thanks
Great to hear!
wow thank you that was a great video the explanation was so clear that i was able to put a scone light with the outlet..THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO
Glad it helped
Thanks man great lesson
Really helpful. Thank You.
Thanks alot.
Works perfectly.
good job
I really appreciate your explanation , it help me a lot thank you sir
I followed the instruction, worked!
good job slap
I found this very helpful. Maybe not for those well versed in electric "stuff". Im not and this helped.
Great in depth video, thanks!
thanks ALEX
Thank u, sir, sincerely
very kind
thank you
The outlet that I want to convert over is only a 2 wire outlet (1950's house). I have tried every possible combination imaginable. Is it possible to have the switch control the outside light (which it's currently doing) AND have an outlet that can plug into?
If I dont care to have the switch work and just have the outlet work, can I take the Load wire from the original light switch and use that to feed the outlet on the bottom? Or does it have to be used top to top. basically just want to take the wires from the top and top, and move them to the bottom and bottom. My wiring is one black and one white. And adding another wire is a little to complicated for me.
Thank you for the guidence.
Glad it was helpful!
So if you didn’t ground the combo switch/ outlet and didn’t plug in outlet tester how you know it’s correct?
Thanks
Darn my one light switch in my old bathroom is wired like your example of the old house. No other outlets. So no possible way to do a combo or add an outlet i suppose.
So that outlet doesn't have continuous power?
So if I got a switch loop (like the second diagram you showed), is there a way to install this outlet ?
Thanks for the reply. I will look into those videos.
Hi I found the solution, it is a gfci combo switch like they use in bathrooms, it has black wires pre installed behind it and you just have to connect those to your black wires
I only have three wires in the box..black, white, and green (ground). There isn't a neutral wire anywhere in the box. As I understand it, I won't be able to install the switch?
The old unit was a switch that operated a bathroom exhaust fan and the light. I wanted to install a switch/outlet combo but the box only has three wires. Does that make sense?
What about the Red wire that is in the back of the original switch? What is that for and where does that go? I found my line, load, ground and neutral hidden in wire nuts just like in the video. But what about the red wire, what is it for and what do I do with it?
@@LEARNINGCHORDS Thank you for the reply; this room does not have a 3 way plug. It is a bedroom with only one light switch. I ended up putting the red wire on the second black terminal. I do have a wired smoke detector in this room and I think it must have never been wired correctly since when I tested the wire before with the neutral it did not read anything. Now that I connected it to the second black screw it now reads the 120v. I even tested power to the smoke detector which has a backup battery and as soon as I removed the battery it lost power. I really appreciate your video as it helped me understand how to find the hot wire vs the load wire and where to find the neutral hidden in the blue box. I even took your teachings to wire a dimmer; although that one hums my LEDs so I have to find a ELV dimmer even though this dimmer was LED compatible -it still flickers and has the LEDs make a buzzing sound but that is not related to this video. Thank you again for the quick response. I bet that other rooms with smoke detectors are also not being wired correctly.
I only have two wires and when I connect the wires to the screws only the will turn on and off put the outlet switch will not work ??????
Hi I found the solution, it is a gfci combo switch like they use in bathrooms, it has black wires pre installed behind it and you just have to connect those to your black wires
What if i don't want the continuous power just switched power.? back story....the single pole toggle switch powers two lights, the ceiling and wall fixture. There is no outlet. so this switch receptacle would be awesome. There are three black wires connected currently the hot on one terminal and the other two on the other terminal. There seems to be white wires caped in the box but non on the switch. How can i get this work?
@@LEARNINGCHORDS thanks will try it tonight.
Can you please help me out? I replaced my kitchen light switch with a Legrand Radiant RCD38TRWCC6 Single Pole/3-Way Switch & 15 Amp Outlet Combo. It looks like the one you are demonstrating in this video. In my wall box I had 3 white wires and 3 black wires and a ground. With the common tab in tact (and the fascia facing front of you) I connected the one LINE hot wire to the bottom right common terminal, then I connected the two remaining black wires which is likely LOAD wires (didn't register hot with NCV tester) to the top left terminal. Then I connected all 3 white neutral wires via pigtail to the bottom left neutral terminal. Grounded it. When I turn the breaker on the outlet receptacle works fine and is on always. BUT the problem now is when the light switch is off, my outlet receptacle in the corner that runs my computer is also OFF. When the light switch is on, then my computer has power to turn on. When I turn the light switch off then my computer turns off. What the heck is going on? Can you please explain to me what I'm doing wrong?
THEY MAKE A SWITCH LIKE THIS MEANT FOR 3 WAY.. I HAVE IT I JUST HAVE NOT MADE A VIDEO FOR IT YET
Hi, I want to put one of this switch in my kitchen. The current switch i have the middle brass tab broken off. Why didn't you break it off?
i need more details...the brass tab on an outlet is used to connect the top and bottom outlets together. that way you only need two wires.. if you have the tab broken off on an outlet.. then top or bottom is normally always powered on and the other one is controlled by a SWITCH
So if i break that brass tab? I will need two hot wires right?
yes or a jumper
Shouldnt you be using a 12 gauge for outlets?
If the circuit breaker at the panel for this branch circuit is 15 amp, then 14 guage is ok. If 20 amp it should be 12 guage.
What if the switch is part of a three way switch?
@@LEARNINGCHORDS Thanks for the reply. I dug in there and realized it's the middle switch of a four way switch...so I don't think it will work. Oh well, thanks though.
dang that was a good diagram. sadly, i live in an old building, and the 2nd diagram applies, so i cannot get to a neutral.
at least you know :)
I'm confused, I checked the light switch wires, one is black and one is white, checked the voltages (in the switch) with the light OFF and there are 124v I have no idea how the light is conected
@@LEARNINGCHORDS So if i have 2 wires then there is absolutely no way to do it at all???? not even if i jump it? like jump the hot wire and connect it to the outlet tab?
@@LEARNINGCHORDS Can i jump from the hot wire though? I can't get the neutral wire from the light fixture because everything is in the wall, i really cant tear into it... please help.
Thank you! Instructions with the product w
ere useless.
YOU NEED TO CONNECT PIGGY BACK YOUR WHITE WIRE TO SILVER SCREW
Ok so I have 2 wires only. A black and a white. I have an Eaton combo switch. I want the plug to have separate power than the switch. One one side of the combo switch I have 2 black screws and a brass. On the other side I have a green and a silver. Please someone help.
it sounds like you can't do it in that box
@@LEARNINGCHORDS yeah I gave up. It’s an old house with janky wiring anyway.
stay well mister MC
This is not making sense sir..How can you run the hot wire from the switch to the Panel??? It has to go back up to the light and then to the panel..Your drawing is wrong.. The way you're showing we would have to run a separate black wire direct from the switch/ outlet device to the panel...OUTSIDE the wall???
The hot is already in the box. He is showing its origin. It could be coming directly from the panel or from an upstream receptacle.
I would like to have seen proof that the receptacle was always hot after flipping the switch off. That was the point of the video.
the point of the video was to show one how to do this.. not to give a stranger proof years after I posted it. I use it all the time. my paper shredder is plugged in and I also plug in my vacuum. I would not have wasted time to post this if it did not work. if you need proof- feel free to record your own video :)
Good to hear the idiots wired my light switch the wrong way. Guess this project is a bust
