I was at the end of my rope about to take the switch back to Lowes. Had tried everything and couldn't figure it out...then I found this video. He made it more clear than anything else I have seen! Thanks for the video. I was successful.
This is exactly the video I was hoping yo find! Thank You, Sparky! You just solved my conundrum! Knowing the HOT from the LOAD wire was my missing link, lol.
You can also wire the device the other way around - line to brass screw, neutral to silver screw, and leave the jumper in place. Doing this will cause the switch to control the receptacle, which has potentially interesting use cases.
Man,I watched a lot of good videos, but yours is definitely the best. Such a clear explanation and repeated showing every single detail is just amazing. If you were a teacher, your students would know much more.
I have to echo others and say that this was a very helpful video. This was the first time that I replaced a combination switch and receptacle. I was replacing an incredibly old switch that was not clearly marked as newer switches are. Easy to follow and understand. Helped me to identify the wires and how to install the new switch. Avoided calling an electrician! Thanks!!
As a contractor & painter, (not an electrician or plumber lol but I’ve worked here & there on projects), I’m just going to say that this video is 100% amazing. I’m rehabbing my 1938 house and opened up a broken combination switch and was in panic mode, now I’m ready to head to Home Depot tomorrow to restart this little project. THANK YOU
Thanks for posting this. I was working with a replacement combo switch and outlet where none of the screw heads were obviously colored for easy ID. The combo that I removed was from the 70's, and had a totally different layout than my modern unit.
Today I watched and listened to your video then I followed your instructions. Perfect real life situation and results. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge
@Sparky Channel. Thanks Bill for the thoroughness of your videos. Even if you don't show every step (like every crimp or to wrap electrical tape around the receptacle), you do it and mention that you did it so that we should be paying attention to details. Hope you and your family stay safe and well.
Like always a superb teaching video. I am 77 Vietnam veteran and I have a problem with a fan with lights which is supposed to be turned on by a 3-way switch. I bought it 10 years ago for 800 dollars and I have been unable to use it. Every time I hired an electrician, he charges me money but does not fix my problem. Sir, if is not too much trouble do you think you can give this old man a hand, Thanks, Juan.
Good morning Bill. Thanks for the video. You are coming back stronger. You are America's Electrician of the Year. My highest respect Bill. You are my hero 👍
Thank you sir! I was struggling with this switch after installing a garbage disposal. I got everything working right, because you explained it perfectly.
Thanks for the video. It's time to wire up a swim deck ceiling fan with the switch your provided the link to. plus the outlet will be used for the plug in speaker, while the switch will be used for the ceiling fan to keep us cool in the summer while enjoying the swim deck on the lake. Thanks again for the video.
Tremendous, your concise & clear instructions helped me with what must be a simple task for any electrician but a challenge to the average DIY'er. thank you
So much info. The best video I've seen on this DIY subject. And the info in the description and the links to the products are just the topping on the cake. Just perfect. Sorry about the hack. I hope you get all the subscribers back. You deserve them. Stay safe.
Thank you so much this explanation was exactly what I needed. This is what UA-cam was created for.. you saved me literally hundreds!! Can't thank you enough
Very good teacher. Though I’m not an electrician I understood all what he did. Now I can do my own electrical work, thanks for sharing your talent to people like me……save lots of dineros thanks again
Good thing I watched this video! Now the instructions make sense. Great video. Thanks for keeping me out of trouble again. I also learned about Wago nuts! Got some ordered.
The way how you show how to work it is just very nice, I am trying to learn many things to became a apprentice and then a electrician, so your videos are helping to create many idea about how to work. For sure I have a long way, but at least your videos are giving me an idea how to start.
Success! Thank you for posting this instructional video. The connections and current flow become quite simple after you explained which terminal does what. Bravo to you!
Thanks Bill, now I know why the switch wasn’t working that o was expecting, very simple. I just have to move one wire to the bronze screw, I installed in the black. So the power stay in the black screw and the switch wire goes to the bronze.
I know how to wire outlets and plugs, but I've never done a duplex combo like this before, and I was concerned about the switch turning off the power to the outlet. I think that I've got it now. Thank you!
Wow thanks for the quick response. I just learn something real quick that seemed very complicated but you made it seem way to easy. Thank you very much.
When I was doing my apprenticeship the way I remember it would be B to B black to brass.the load wire. But at times the white wire can also be the load wire what you call continuity and that sometimes where things used to get tricky . But then you just reverse it white to b and your black becomes a neutral
Bill I have 3 wires in my light switch box a black wire which is hot, a white which is neutral I guess and a ground.. I’m missing the load wire ..:I guess all the other wires are up at the fixture from the breaker ... is there still a way I can get this combo switch to work ... Thanks for any help
I tried hooking the hot wire which is black to the dark common screw with the tab which is intact not broken. The neutral to the silver screw and ground to ground but the light switch wouldn’t work just the receptacle worked ..
Bill I don’t know if you still read these but if I can’t use this combo switch I wonder if I can add a bigger box that would hold a switch and a receptacle and just pig tail off the The existing wires from the switch to the receptacle
I am looking for a toggle dimmer switch combined with an outlet. I cannot find this anywhere. Please let me know the name of company that makes a combination dimmer switch and outlet. Thank you.
So, just a general question about these types of switches. If you leave the tab intact, then connect your line to the brass screw, and then connect your neutral to the silver screw, followed by your ground that it wouldn't be any different from a schematic point of view. The only difference is that the line wire would be on the other terminal of the switch.
Sparky Channel thanks for such prompt response. Reason I asked is because I have traced a ceiling wire to a switch on the wall ...there is voltage on one of the two ceiling wires and one leg at the switch when switch is open and voltage on both ceiling wires with the switch closed but when I connected a ceiling fan (blue and black from fan to hot wire and white to the other ceiling wire) nothing happens. I also tried connecting a light across the ceiling wires and nothing....
Hi, you could have used the deep Sigma box, regular is $4.68 deep one is $11.×× in Lowes or Az , but would by easier than using the extension, i think i will get the deep one for my project (the switch is for an outdoor flood light, and adding a gfci outside in the box outside where the cable from the inside switch to the light outdoor will be crossing on its way, so , i think the outside junction box/gfci outlet will get crowded, not much space for wires.... so even though i already have all the bushing etc prepared... I think I will just get the bigger-deeper box and avoid 3 hours of accommodating cables ... and those gfci are really boxy and big and deep they barely fit in outlet boxes nowadays!!😅😅
The only video that actually shows where the load wire goes other videos said it goes on the brass one my outlet worked only when my switch was on I wanted continuous power to the outlet ,
Great video as always. What’s the area shown at the end of the video? I spent about a week in SD about 5 years ago and got to visit several areas including IB, Coronado, Cabrillo, and also some further north (Del Mar? Oceanside?) but can’t remember them all. Great area which I hope to visit again some day.
That is the "Blowhole" on Oahu, Hawaii. I'm always on the lookout for pleasant clips from beautiful places to put on the end of my videos. It's my way of saying "thanks for watching". Yes, San Diego has some very beautiful places!
How to wire a 3 way combo switch w/outlet having 1 red/2blacks & 2 whites capped behind? How wire a regular combo (non 3 way) with 3 whites/2blacks. Can figure 2nd one but getting ticked at the 3 way
This is excellent, in another video they said that on the two live screws, if you attach the live wire to the switch it will control the power going to the plug effectively shutting it off, but if you attach the live wire to the plug screw both plug and light switch have power, is this true?
Thanks for the video. This is a single outlet and in one of your videos, you mentioned that you cannot use a single outlet with a 20 amp breaker. I have a 20 amp breaker and I want to use this combo outlet, can I?
Hey sparky thanks for the video, I installed the exact same switch. I attached the hot wire to only one black screw however when I turn on or off the switch it also turns the outlet on or off. Do I need to remove the tab and split the hot wire?
Great video but my existing old installation has different wiring - two black wires both seem to be hot on one side with an unused ground terminal in the middle and two white wires on the other side, the bare wires are twisted together. Switch controls exterior light, outlet is always powered. How do I replace with a new liviton like the one you show? Appreciate any help. I will be happy to send you pictures if needed. Thank you very much.
thanks in the first two minutes I finally understood why it wasn't working for me. i was using a switch connection to give power to the receptacle lol. so that's why sometimes the black/whites are inversed, when they are a secondary line that comes from the light.
Great work Bill, i remember you did a video where you showed how to wire a gfci receptacle TR& WR outdoor with a regular duplex outlet. Can you do the same video? I will appreciate. Thank you again for your good work.
Hello good night, just making sure I got this correct wire up outlet to control a light and once tabs aren’t broken, the outlet to the bottom will not be disturbed with the toggling of the light switch , once tab is broken then the socket will be turned on /off with the switch…. Did I say that correct ? Sorry I’m new to this !
Great video mr. Sparky, I have learned so much from all of your videos. Any chance of you doing a few with arc fault circuit interrupters receptacles and Breakers
I have this in my bathroom now the plug part stop working so I replaced it and cannot get it to work no matter what I do. But this house was built in the 50s I only got a hot and common wire and ground should I have 4 wires together am lost why I can’t get this to work. When it work for years.
PLEASE help. I think I have this correct... I'm installing a new light fixture abd wanting to swap my current receptacle with this; keeping one receptacle and adding the light switch for the new light. My problem is- I have 2 white wires, 2 black wires and a ground in this box already. How do I hook this device up with all these wires? Connecting all current black wires together and all white wires together?
*Question for those who understand electrical work* what is the point of pigtailing? I’ve run across this term many times over the years and I understand the basic premise of how it works but I don’t understand the benefit. Thanks 😊🙌
I installed this today. The outlet and switch work just fine. When I was doing some wire management I noticed I lost power. The power is being supplied by a 3 way switch apparently. When the 3 way switch is in the on position the Outlet and switch work. When the either switch on the 3 way switch is turned on or off it turn the switch outlet combo on/off.. I can't figure out why this is occurring. Thoughts?
My guess is either a loose connection somewhere or the 3-way switch is mis-wired. See my video: How to Fix a 3-Way Switch System: ua-cam.com/video/EGyXhV0p-4w/v-deo.html
Thx, I did watch it and a few others. The 3 way switches seem to work fine on either side but when either 3 way switch is turned off it shuts off power to the switch/outlet combo. It shuts off both the outlet and the switch because I didn't remove the bridge in the combo unit. @@SparkyChannel
had my local electrician stop over and look at it, they couldn't figure it out and I had it wired correctly. They think the previous owner of the home may have had a box buried in the wall with some odd wiring configuration. @@SparkyChannel
Ive got a lightswitch that only has the neutral, hot and ground on a single pole switch, the electrician must have some kind of wiring in the light to make this work, can I still use this switch or is it not going to work because I dont have access to the load AND line wires?
If you don't have a line wire, the electricity has nothing to go to. The switch controls whether or not power goes to a line wire, if it's wired correctly. Have to have that line wire going to something.
You would connect live input to the load side of the switch, keep the tab that connects both live of switch and outlet and connect neutral to the neutral side of the outlet
Great. I have 2 blacks and will pigtail my whites I see in back. Light works just need to make bottom outlet HOT. I'm not sure if adding the white to bottom left silver will do bc it's not a black wire but will see...
Doing same in living room but LR just has 1white & 1black. Switch operates the lower outlet on opposite wall, don't think that's 3 way, I've tried every way on this one reversing wires. Not sure how to pigtail this one?
Yes, but be careful on connections and make sure electricity follows all the cables in the right direction, meaning, connect things in way that make sense if you know how to work with all this things and you have a good !! Notion of electricity, I am actually doing it myself, I am replacing a normal outlet inside the house with this device and then the switch is for a patio light outside and since I prefer to put box in the outside (nor that plastic garbage in different options with lid and 2 screws) , I am then adding an outlet gfci outside, so that outside box will have an normal gfci outlet and the wire to the lamp crosses by the box .
Thank you. Watched 5 different videos before I found someone who got to the point and actually told me how to wire this thing.
You’re awesome.

I believe the switch/outlet combo is receiving power from the 3 way switches so when they are turned off I lose power.
had my local electrician stop over and look at it, they couldn't figure it out and I had it wired correctly. They think the previous owner of the home may have had a box buried in the wall with some odd wiring configuration. @@SparkyChannel

You’re a life saver!!👍👍
Great to hear, thanks!
Excellent video! Thank you so much!
You're very welcome!
How do i wire this so that the switch controls power going to that single outlet you have there?
You would connect live input to the load side of the switch, keep the tab that connects both live of switch and outlet and connect neutral to the neutral side of the outlet
Great Job SPARKY⚡️
Could i pigtail the line, ground, and neutral to run to an additional outlett? And the from that outlett to another?
Yes, but be careful on connections and make sure electricity follows all the cables in the right direction, meaning, connect things in way that make sense if you know how to work with all this things and you have a good !! Notion of electricity, I am actually doing it myself, I am replacing a normal outlet inside the house with this device and then the switch is for a patio light outside and since I prefer to put box in the outside (nor that plastic garbage in different options with lid and 2 screws) , I am then adding an outlet gfci outside, so that outside box will have an normal gfci outlet and the wire to the lamp crosses by the box .
