B&Ch is not even half as dark as in books it all happen in Alicent place and Helaean screamed on all castle she has one more son in books
it's not about the gore. It was more disturbing because the kids were awake and they forced her to choose who dies.
No book spoilers but I'll be really interested in how they go forward with the deviations from B&C. I'm not disappointed that they didn't show the murder but I am confused as to how they'll work in the ways the surviving characters of that incident are affected when they didn't include certain parts.

@@AK-pw3oq Butchered is ridiculous hyperbole. Why does everything have to be a masterpiece or dogshit, jesus christ. It was less brutal but it was fine. The blacks haven't really been whitewashed either, Daemon has done some horrible shit, Rhaenys killed hundreds of smallfolk, even Rhaenyra has done some messed up stuff. Especially considering the source material is an in world history book written by multiple maesters with an agenda years after the fact who all contradict each other, the most unreliable narrator possible. A lot of fellow book readers/lore knowers are embarrassing the fandom with this episode, making us all look insufferable.
Fun tidbit: Syrax is believed to be the mother of Vermax, Arrax and Tyraxes (the dragons of Rhaenyra's 3 oldest sons) so when Rhaenyra is mourning over the remains on the beach, Syrax is grieving the loss of her offspring as well. So damn sad.

I mean the killers even quote Daemon as having said "a son for a son", which we didn't see him say. Which pretty much means that was his response when they asked "what if we can't find Aemond". He's implicitly giving consent to kill *any* son of the Greens.

Daemon’s plan didn’t fuck up at all. Rewatch the scene when they asked “what if we can’t find him?” (Which is a good question) and Daemon gave a sly smirk. This is the next best thing.

A lot of the designs on the intro were the drawings on Helaena's wall. It's almost as if she's the one weaving out the events through history because she's always embroidering something.

Daemon's purpose was not to make a strategic move, a well thought action, he's the ROGUE prince, he wanted revenge and revenge was served.
If Blood and Cheese would have in fact found Aemond, the chances of they killing him were too small, so neutralizing him and Vhagar is wishful thinking.
He wants more that revenge. Daemon wants WAR, unlike Rheanyra, who only wanted Aemond's head.

It was a strategic move too. By mentally ruining Helaena they make it so she cant ride her dragon into battle. Her dragon is Dreamfyre, one of the strongest dragons alive. Which now wont be joining the fight.
I think the rat catcher knowing that she was telling the truth was, in a REALLY fucked up way, is one of the only times that someone has really taken the effort to emotionally connect to Helaena rather than it being a reflection of the rat catcher's intelligence.

I noticed that they focused on him when he walked by Alicent by the stairs and when Aegon and Otto were talking with the smallfolk in the throne room. The giant doors were open, and you could see the rat catcher walking with his dog as if they were placing a big red arrow on top of him, and of course, Helaena talking about rats.

The ending is a rare case of the show TONING DOWN something from the book. For context, this is what happened in the book: Blood and Cheese found Helaena as they did in the show, however she and Aegon had two sons, not a son and a daughter, so they made her choose which son they'd kill and which one they'd spare. She fought back, begged them to kill her instead, and eventually, they forced her to choose. Then, after she chose, they killed the OTHER son instead, and said the one she chose would grow up knowing his mother chose him to be killed.
Aegon and Helaena actually had 3 children in the book. The twins Jaehaerys and Jaehaera plus a younger son, Maelor.
Yep, very disappointed in this first episode, this change was unnecessary just like the "beast beneath the boards" of last season. I fear this show may be headed towards another game of thrones season 8 situation if they keep changing shit like that

I dont think Daemon sees it as a dumb plan. Blood and Cheese did EXACTLY what they were paid to do. They also dont have any personal gain from killing anybody else. So it makes no sense they would try to kill Helaena and Jaehaera as well. They got paid to kill a son, they did.
In the sense that they lost the element of surprise for a non military target then yes it was dumb.

What threw me off a little in that last scene was Alicent and Criston banging with their door unlocked. Like that's just crazy and so supremely careless. Is their affair such an open secret at this point that they don't care who sees them?
Why would a royal lock a door? Anybody coming in the queens chamber without being summoned better have a damned good reason for doing so.

When I watched this alone, I was confused because Deamon gave a clear description: "Silver hair, ONE EYE"... htf do you confuse that with a CHILD WITH 2 EYES?! Then I remembered, "What if we dont find him?" and I got curious about if this was the backup plan.

The sounds in *that* scene were genuinely horrific. I've never heard what something like that would sound, but I feel like the sound designers made it so that I feel like I did.
I think the sound designers literally cut off a pigs head or something of the sort.
When I was a teenager I was dumb enough to watch a video from n*zies who caught migrants in Russia. Well... In this video the sound of the head being ctoff was very similar to what I heard in this episode... It was so fucked up to refresh this memory

She didnt take her duties seriously enough to court Allies to her side and just assumed her Relatives in the Baratheons would support her while offering nothing.
She was rather flippant and discouterous to her Suiters and made powerful enemies in the Lannister's because she thought her dad was just pawning her off when he was trying to marry her to a suiter Equal to her status as the Queen of the Realm.
She doesnt take into account the feelings of the smallfolk even when Daemon is telling her its important to keep her ear to the ground and listen to what her subjects believe if she wants to rule.
And she has a habit of wanting her Cake and eating it too when it comes to marriage and her seeking pleasure.
Aegon at least has shown he isnt another Joffery/Ramsay who sees the smallfolk as his playthings and knows he needs to meet their needs when he can as their King.
He cared about his son and wanted to show him how to rule,which is something Viserys never did for him.
Aegon is stepping to the occasion thrust upon him by his Mother and now shes upset.
@@whyte4315 Rhaenyra was trained but I don't think she has the temperament to be a good ruler either. This episode was actually a good showcase of that. You can say Daemon is being unsympathetic but he's spitting facts when he talks to Rhaenys about how Rhaenyra's absence is affecting their war effort.
At least for the Greens even though Aegon is hard to deal with in the war room, at least they can proceed with their alliances and strategies rather than just sitting around waiting like the Blacks are doing.

That was Young Joff that Jace was holding. Aegon the Younger and Viserys II would have white hair.
There were two Kingsgaurd in the throne room and one in Alicent's room. It can be assumed that there's still a Kingsgaurd up on the outer wall looking for dragons. That's all 4 since Rhaenyra has the other 3 Kingsgaurd.
The plan worked pretty well if you ask me. Low risk, high reward for Daemon
My personal theory is that Daemon was ok with the plan failing. He wants war. Even if the Greens catch the assassins, all B&C have to do is say "Daemon told us he wanted a son for a son" and they'll be motivated to war. If they succeed, great. If not, acceptable.
@@Adamantium93 The plan didn't even fail. Sure Daemon would have preferred Aemond but the fact that Cheese asked what to do if they couldn't find Aemond and the implied response was "a son for a son" shows that Daemon wanted to inflict pain to accelerate the war.

@@Adamantium93technically by all accounts daemon just saved his sons life for blood and cheese killing jaehareys as cruel as it was he secured his family’s future along with jace. Daemon took out all the male heirs on aegons side and since he was so badly crippled he couldn’t have anymore nor could he put one of his bastards on the throne either or his daughter. It was all around a win win for daemon no matter how it looked like.

Alicent wasn't defending Aemond in that scene with Otto. She was doing the opposite.
Luc took Aemond's eye but "no matter how vicious" it was he didn't deserve to get killed the way he did. She's been furious with Aemond ever since and I wish we had the scene of her and Otto roasting Aemond after he confessed.
She doesn't know it wasn't intentional and obviously Aemond would never tell a soul what really happened. Sad
Yeah that was a regret with the episode. "You only lost one eye, how could you be so blind" is such a bar from Otto. I hope they find a way to use it in the season.

Daemon didn't fuck up, something slightly more emphasized in the book is the Aegon Vs Rhaenyra fight, Jaehaerys in the book and in the show was intended, Rhaenyra wanted Aemond, but if you think about it, The Queen's son was killed (luke) so now the King's son must die as well. It's the truest and most equal form of A Son for a Son. Gotta give GRRM a round of applause for that one.

I am in awe of the scene when Jace returns from the North. He's trying so hard to do his duty with a straight face but the news that his one of his brothers is dead is eating at him hard. And Rhaenyra (as a mother) goes to comfort him and share in his sorrow. For that moment there, they forgot about the crown and politics and just thought about the family they lost.

He's the king's guard, he's sworn to protect the royal family, so yes, by priority he should be at the King's/Queen's room on guard duty

He was sworn to Alicent(prior to his promotion), but the Lord Commander usually protects the King.
The Books are so different, There were 3 children presend and she choose the younger son Maegor and Cheese said to Maegor "You hear that, little boy? Your momma wants you dead." Then Cheese signals Blood to kill Prince Jaehaerys instead who was the eldest and she screamed and blood and cheese left with Jaehaerys Head.

i felt that Otto could tell Aegon wasnt going to budge on that request..it was the way the actor emphasized the word "smallfOLK" clicking his tongue and staring directly at otto afterwards..it was subtle but standoffish. Aegon said "alright your not convincing me otherwise im doing this grandpa" kind of vibe. Aegon is actually alot like both of his parents hes not a total asshole or pushover wich is refreshing becuase it always feels like we get the extreme with most kings in westeros.
More like "let's not bother trying to put some sense in a kid who already made up his mind".

In the book I thought they make Helena pick her favorite child to live and they end up killing that one? So the child who lived would know the mother gave him up for the rest of his life.

Daemon told them to kill the son of Aegon if they couldnt find Aemond. It was also not just a dumb revenge plan, but a tactical move. Helaena rides Dreamfyre, one of the strongest dragons alive. By mentally scarring her this bad, they take out a very powerfull dragonrider while also getting a son for a son.

It wasn't accidental. That was Plan B. Rewatch the scene with Daemon and then pay attention to the dialogue right before they commit the act and it's very easy to piece together what they should do if they didn't find Aemond.

They weren't being dumb, Daemon wanted a son for a son, when they asked what if they cant find Aemond, the show cuts away and implies that for a reason. In the book Daemon does not care about the son, he just wants a son, and prefers the heir to the throne which is the kid Jaehaerys. Also yes, this was a strategic victory because now Aegon's heir is dead which means Aemond is the heir, which puts Aegon's life potentially in danger from internal factional infighting and assasination. You're also missing that both factions have pacifist and pro-war blocks (Aemond and Cole on team green, and Daemon on team black). Having a son killed on each side is in the interest of the pro war block of both factions. Daemon regrets nothing from this night.

You're really only missing some verbal stuff when it comes down to it.

I also think use of language is very important in HOTD and Rhaenyra said "I want Aemond Targaryen" that's all, she didn't say I want him dead or bring his body just "I want Aemond Targaryen" and the way I personally interpreted her words was that she wanted him alive to then do what she wanted with him. Daemon just went and turned her words into his own thing like always.
There is no way in Seven Hells she wanted him alive.
