Anything is better than Legends. SWG Legends is run by a bunch of creeps who solicit underage photos of children of long time members. It's public information on the swg reddits too. They're insane.
I've never got to try Star Wars Galaxies but I've always wanted to. And the version from before the Combat Update sounds pretty interesting so I might give Restoration a try.
I had one of my best memories in MMORPG history in SWG. Having no friends who would play the game with me, I started as an aspiring Marksman wanting to become a Commando for the Empire, in which I eventually succeeded. Along the way, I came across an imperial aligned player driven city that leaned hard into the roleplay side of the game and I think no Star Wars product of the modern day immersed me more than this time. It was not about the heroes of the empire or the republic, it was about the faceless characters that try to make it in this rather unforgiving science-fantasy world. It was truly unique and remarkable.
I have been playing on SWG Restoration for 2+ years, and it's everything I ever wanted out of SWG. CU combat for the most part, and NGE instances/content. It's a very nice server with friendly people willing to help out
"Friendly people", that is key right there. There really isn't any griefing going on and us old people that played the original are always eager to help out the new player experiencing SWG for the first time.
What were some of your favorite things to do? I loved getting different instruments and working toward that giant mega instrument and playing in bands. That and rancor nests.
I played Legends years ago and it is a good NGE server, but jumped on Restoration and haven't looked back. Restoration is just a perfect blend of the CU and NGE.
Dude, this video comes out of nowhere, and really hits the spot. I still want swg to come back in a revamped and refurbished state via an official server backed and supported by both its former creator (Raph, Daybreak/SOE and the ppl behind these private servers) and the community. Rectify the mistakes and give it another shot and readd it to All Access. I always liked the idea of having a single sub for all of my favorite mmos and swg was a great addition to the mix. PS: nice music choice at the very end! 80's retro synth vibes baby!
I believe Raph has spoken favorably about these servers in the past. I imagine the addition of Lucas Arts owning the IP probably makes SWG more difficult to officially recognize but Daybreak did officially recognize the Everquest p99 private server which is great.
@@Redbeardflynn Yup, he sure has. He even speaks about it in the swg post mortem video available here on yt and you can see his face glow up when he mentions how the emulator servers have taken things even further by developing their own expansions etc. I also remember an interview with Smed where he goes into detail about how they acknowledged P99 and how good they feel about that. John was then asked if the same could be applied to swg or Vanguard and his response was that they wouldn't be against it nor would they stand in the way, in fact it was said they would even support the cause if done right, but in the case of swg it's in the hands of Lucas (and now probably Disney too?). Can someone give Lucas or Disney a call then? Haha! Vanguard was left uncommented though but as we know Daybreak still has that one in its vault of source codes, so at the very least I see Vanguard being a realistic option for resurrection. The eq2 devs were asked about swg in the old eq2 forums and their response was that it would be a legal nightmare to bring that one back, but no one straight out said it is impossible, just very, very complicated so to speak. I believe a lot of things are possible given the right circumstances and when ppl really want it by showing their support and interest through various ways (monetary support being just one option). I am interested in what Raph is doing with Stars Reach and the fact that he reacted to the critique that ppl had with the original toony and oversaturated colorful graphics in such a swift and professional way by actually addressing that issue heads on this early in its development (graphics look much better now) just makes me appreciate his work even more. He didn't try to force it upon anyone, he just went ahead and fixed it. I like that. That said, I would still vote for a fully refurbished, revamped and upgraded swg if given the chance. There's something truly special about that version of Star Wars when combined with the unique vision and sheer scale that swg had and still has, and I believe the potential for more is still there in swg. Despite the drastic changes, in the end they did well with swg, they really did.
Looking forward to watching this on the way home. I only ever played this a little back in the day. Thanks for your amazing content! (Especially when covering the Everquest series!)
Played on the Ahazi server and lived on Rori. Had a huge city there with friends. First game I played where I actually met people and we all lived by each other and socialized daily.
SWG in its heydey was huge for socializing, from the huge player cities to pvp to running nests together to trading and cantinas (especially when they added entertainer buffs)
@@Redbeardflynn I used to hang out with a bunch of other rangers. We would go on group hunts for Kimogila, Krayt Dragons, Gorax, or we would just go fishing at a remote lake on Endor. Such good memories. Now I am playing on Restoration a loving it.
"It's one of the harder things for me when trying to jump back into this game." I feel this way about EQ's UI every time I go back. Nothing makes sense for a few days.
Man, my favorite memory in a mmo was in swg. I was the 2nd person on my server to unlock a jedi character and this was before they made it easier to do. It was so scary having to play in secret trying to level up. Ultimately I quit bc the xp loss when you died and the griefing from other player's I couldn't really enjoy the game anymore. I do love that feeling of unlocking the jedi and that screen music though! I'll have to check this out.
Have they explained how swimming and breathing underwater while playing as a Bith is supposed to work? Or do I have to throw immersion completely and utterly out the window?
So what are the main differences between Legends and Restoration? I am not sure how people pick. It looks like Legends has added an entire new city while Restoration is mixing CU/NGE/pre-CU stuff (Ranger, with unique abilities from CU Sniper, Pre-CU Ranger, and NGE Spy) for what is most fun but maybe has less content under their belt so far? Most people are on Legends it seems but is that because it is more enjoyed or because it has been around longer?
Legends is based on the NGE and only has the 9 iconic classes. Restoration is losely based on the CU and still has 32 professions you can mix and match. Legends (NGE) you automatically level as you gain XP and you put points in a cookie cutter expertise, limited to your chosen profession. Restoration you earn XP for specific skills such as various weapons, medical, scouting, crafting, creature handling, so on. Then you level by training points in to those areas. That allows you to mix and match to best suit your playstyle. For example, in Legends, you can be a Bounty Hunter class, and you spend points as you level in only the bounty hunter expertise. Whereas in Restoration, you can be a Bounty Hunter, but you may only want to train in the area that allows you to take player bounties and then spend points in other professions to best suit your play style. Or maybe you go ahead and master BH, but also Master Commando for dots and aoe dps. Or maybe you want to be a Master Ranger / Master Lancer / that hunts players. There are so many possibilities for your build. For example, I have a Lancer / Doctor with some Combat Medic. I have a Fencer / Creature Handler. You can be a Pistoleer / Smuggler or any other multitude of combinations, like it was when SWG originally launched on through the preCU and CU periods of the game, before the NGE. Another difference is, Jedi is not a starting class on Restoration. You unlock force sensitivity (incite) by completing certain things, including random unknowns for your character. It's different for everyone. I'm not trying to knock Legends. I played on it some years back and enjoyed it. It basically comes down to your play style really. There are pros and cons for both servers. I personally prefer Restoraton, but a lot of people would prefer Legends. Both servers have awesome dev teams. I would say servers like Restoration or the preCU SWGemu servers have a higher learning curve than NGE server like Legends or Beyond. With that said, your character feels more unique on servers like Restoration and game play is a bit more challenging, while more rewarding at the same time. You really have to put some thought into your character development, which I feel makes it a lot more fun.
I think for modern MMOs, it would serve them well to look back at SWG for ideas that could change the industry. i think theme park MMOs work for a reason, but they dont last very long. aspects of SWG created so much buy in to your character and server that is so sorely lacking from basically any MMO today.
I would love to get back into this (aka actually learn this game) and also see if it works well on Linux, but I already have like 10 MMOs installed lol, and I need to get back into City of Heroes.
I played SWG about 6 months before the game shut down. The community was toxic and unhelpful. Afterwards, I was off star wars games...until I found the collectors edition of swtor on sale at walmart in august 2012. I bought it and have played swtor off and on for 12 years now. News of private SWG servers...doesn't interest me at all. I wish it did.
Not for nothing, but "getting new races" has been out on NUMEROUS other servers for years, same with other customizations, upgrades, new missions, new areas,a few have new classes etc. Not trying to take away from Resto, but it's not the only server with these new things, but its kinda behind if its just now coming out with them lol. That being said, you have to watch which server you join. There are a few (and I'm sure by now many know which servers I mean) are filled with douchebags, cheaters, devs that spawn everything good ONLY for their clans to have the best gear, etc. And if you say the wrong things (which you never know what is "wrong" until after you say it) they'll ban you because they don't like what you said about them lol. Spend your time wisely and research before you waste your time on said douchebag servers lol.
First, Restoration is a different type of server. Servers like Legends and Beyond are based on the NGE with only iconic classes (yes, I know Beyond has the custom Vanguard class as well). Servers based on the SWGemu code are preCU. Restoration is based more on the CU, but is a hybrid of the CU/NGE. You still have 32 professions. There is no other server like Restoration. They are now making various changes to take a little bit different path, because there will be a new dedicated CU server launching soon. Since Legends does NGE the best and the new server will focus solely on being a pure CU experience, Restoration has chosen to strive to be the best hybrid between the two. It remains the be seen if they will succeed or not in that goal, but they have done a really good job so far. They are also working on adding Nar Shaddaa and the sneak peeks they have shown, it looks to be much more impressive than custom planets on any other server. Second, some of the species on other servers are not fully customizable (Beyond / Evolve / Empire in Flames), but the Restoration devs actually worked on the new species rather than just doing an npc copy paste, so that they are all fully customizable. Third, implementing things from the NGE into a server built around the CU combat style requires a lot of work and testing for balance to be properly implemented. If you just toss Heroics in for example, it isn't going to work when players are built around the old HAM systems (health, action, mind, force) with an average of only 4k health when the Heroics were designed for the NGE where player HAM (health and action) and had an average of 20k health and didn't have to manage food/drink and fill the same way as you did in the CU and preCU. Fourth, the devs/staff of Restoration isn't too hung up on stuff like the other servers (i'm just going to say it - Legends, Beyond, and Evolve) you are likely talking about. Now, there is on dev that will get rather punchy, but you can get punchy right back without any retribution. For the most part, Restoration also has a more mature player base than certain servers. Not really any drama going on.
You didn't give it a chance then. The combat gets much better as you skill up. There are attributes associated with weapon skills that increase the combat speed as you reach higher skill level, as well as accuracy, so on.
SWG New Beginnings is currently the best SWG emulator. Higher DPS cap weapons. World Bosses (The Crusader(Mando), Mutated Peko Peko, Donk Donk Binks, IG-88, Jedi Hermit, Mutated Ancient Krayt Dragon) The station player hub with buffing/stim droids/food cart. Custom player houses etc.
I think it rather up to personal opinion on which server is the best. I've played on a handful and Restoration is my favorite. Other people would say Legends is the best server, while others would say Beyond is the best server, and other would say SWGemu Finalizer or Infinity are the best, and then you have the Empire in Flames crowd. There are pros and cons to any server to be honest.
Excellent video Redbeard! Thanks for talking about our project and hope to see you in-game soon :)

SWG Restoration is clearly the best private server out of all the bunch and im devastated that it doesn't have more players.

private servers are so much better then live
In this case (and warhammer return of reckoning) we wouldn't even have the games anymore without these private servers and their dedicated volunteers.
