So. How different is the new server to play on? Would you recommended it to a retuning player?

The New Legacy server is still in BETA, not fully released. The developers are keeping it active only for Friday thru Sunday on select weekends when they want testers. Once the BETA testing is over and the game is released some points may have changed a bit, but here are my present thoughts:
I think that Broadsword is doing a good thing here. A fresh server will appear regularly to break the stagnation of the existing Shards. New players are less likely to get bored or distracted while training their characters due to the narrative questlines and veteran players can still choose to do things the old-fashioned way picking and training each individual skill. As a bonus, existing shards/servers will see an influx of characters when each New Legacy server is retired.
If any reader hasn't read up on New Legacy, quick recap:
      - only one New Legacy server/shard to be active during a set "season/chapter/storyline" or however they plan to pitch it. Character and item transfers will not be available, so every player will be starting from zero. Very similar to the resets on Diablo and Path of Exile servers.
      - when the server/shard storyline is up, all players will be required to transfer their characters to the other servers/shards and New Legacy will begin new again.
      - to prevent new players getting blogged down in creating and training new characters a large amount of work has gone into how new characters are created and trained. Players can pick between the traditional method of picking and training individual skills, or follow a narrative questline based on a template they pick for their character.
      - the narrative questlines for Warrior, Mage and Crafter templates let new players quickly advance characters in both skill and stats, but advancement is locked-in, so no adding skills outside of the game assigned template until you advance to a certain point. Skill gain is based on completing quests, and using skills will not advance the character until they finish the narrative quests for their template.
