    I just want to say thank you so much for making this video about Cactus car rental! I just got back from a trip to Cabo and la Paz and we had booked with a different company. We waited in line for almost an hour and then they wanted to charge $400 more than we booked for. After arguing with them for 20 more minutes and getting nowhere, I called Cactus and they picked us up at the other rental place, drove us to their place and we had a car within 15 minutes and saved over $250 US! Thank you!

    I have to comment again here because we just had the best experience with Cactus! We used EuropCar on our last visit and were held in their 100+ degree waiting room for 40 minutes before the insurance shenanigans even began. We ended up driving away well over an hour after arriving having paid double the price we were quoted. Then waited another 30 minutes again after the return before being taken to the airport. With Cactus this trip, we were whisked over to their lot, asked a few questions and were driving away having paid the original quoted amount in less than 15 minutes. The return was even better - we didn't even get out of the car! They drove us immediately to the airport in the same car, helped with our bags and drove away. Slick! Love it!

    Just booked four day rental with Cactus for my upcoming trip to Cabo. The rates were excellent especially since they include the third party liability insurance. I am paying $180 USD for a VW Jetta and my credit card includes collision damage waiver coverage so I’m good to go. I plan to drive to La Paz to visit family that I haven’t seen in years so I am excited. I will share my experience when I get back!! Thank you for your video. I have been watching all sorts of videos by expats and I am jealous I can’t retire tomorrow and move to Baja :)

    Very little beats renting a car in mexico and hitting the open road and being able to do what you want at your own pace. We rented from cactus about 10-12 years ago, top notch experience other than the time share salesman offering me a "map" but that's ubiquitous in cabo so i can't blame them too much. I recall it being a much smaller facility, looks like they've grown considerably, a testament to their great customer experience. Love watching the videos (other than making me jealous!).

    One thing you left out, at least at most rental car companies at the airport, you think you just escaped the time share salespeople coming out of customs and then before they will bring you your car they put on the really hard pitch - never give in - and once you drive away from the rental lot, you'll love it so much you will want to move here like we did

    Because of your recommendations, I called Cactus to book a car. The agent can barely speak English, but that's OK. She did not understand the difference between collision coverage (which many US credit cards cover in Mexico) and liability coverage, which no US credit cards cover so you have to buy it (just like in the US, really). She said the counter agent would charge me whatever they decided to charge, and she can't quote me a price over the phone. Its entirely random, and up to the counter agent to charge whatever they please. She was very clear about this; I asked several times in different ways. I couldnt tell whether it was the language barrier. It still doesnt explain why their rates are about 2.5 times everyone else, even without the extra liability insurance added on. Do you have a financial relationship with Cactus?

  • @popeye98107

    Has anyone ever gotten into an accident in Mexico? I've heard that the whole process is much different and that the local police don't want to deal with insurance. I've heard that they want you to pay up in cash immediately, regardless. Years ago I used to drive from Tucson to Sonora in my own car with Mexican insurance purchased from a local Tucson agency. Never got into an accident. Not sure of that whole process.

    • @willp9226
      @willp9226 2 роки тому

      I wondered the same thing. Especially regarding the Mexican car rental agencies always wanting to charge you maximum insurance on top of your credit card insurance. So I phoned my credit card company's insurance provider and they said you are covered in Mexico with their insurance, and if you are involved in an accident or any insurance claim, as soon as you can, call them. Don't call the police, the rental agency, nor their insurance. Call them and walk away. They will deal with everything. Still, next time I'm in Mexico I will be renting from Cactus.

    Cactus Rent A Car is always a money saver. I have a a car rental booked in the coming week with Nu Car Rental (booked through Expedia) for 7 days, for $115 USD, With Mexican Liability Insurance (the minimum Insurance you Must have to rent a car in Mexico). BUT I am thinking this is not true and I am thinking of having a Backup booking with Cactus rent A car. we'll see. And one point when booking a car online: NEVER EVER pre-pay money upfront when booking a car online such as with "Car Trawler." Never ever buy CDW insurance or pre-pay for any other insurance online when booking the car. You will probably lose that money because when you arrive at the car rental counter, they do not accept third party vendor insurance and they will rewrite you another contract with their own insurance. Always buy insurance directly with the car rental company at the rental counter when you arrive at the airport. And sometimes it is okay to "walk up to the counter" when you arrive at the airport. Its not always really necessary to pre-book your car online (only in Mexico).

    So is the collision that they offer is that the “liability” insurance or are they completely different? I am traveling to Mexico and planning on renting a car. I was thinking either Alamo car rental.

    • @laura-bronner
      @laura-bronner  3 роки тому +2

      No they are different. Liability insurance is third party insurance and you MUST have it when you rent a car in Mexico. The other insurance, collision or full coverage can be covered by your credit card. Big international places like Alamo, Budget, National etc do not include the third party liability insurance in their price that they quote you online, so you will need to pay it when you arrive. Small locally owned places like Cactus include the third party liability insurance in their quoted price, which is why initially they seem more expensive, but they are not. Hope that helps - I explain it a little bit more in this article: www.eternal-expat.com/2019/01/14/renting-a-car-in-mexico/

      Driving in Baja Sur is very safe and easy to do. Especially if you stick to the main highways and major destinations. If you plan to head "off road" to some of the more distant beaches, you may want to consider a higher clearance car simply because it can be a bit rocky there.

    Thanks for this! We've been hit with this insurance thing in the past. So when renting through Expedia this statement is clearly shown: "MXN $750,000 liability coverage included". Has anyone found that to be true/no true? If not, we'll use Cactus. :)

      The trouble with Expedia is that it’s not the car company, it’s a third party and I’ve always been told that third party insurances are not a substitute for paying the liability insurance directly to the car company. This could have changed, but I think it’s always better to book directly with the rental car companies here in Mexico.

      I also have a car rental booking in the coming week with Nu Car Rental (booked through Expedia) for 7 days, for $115 USD, With Mexican Liability Insurance. I am highly doubting this. They might turn around and say NO we don't accept insurance from other companies. I am thinking of having a back up booking with Cactus rent a car.

      @@manuelchaves2963 I don't trust Expedia or any other travel site for car rental. You show up at the counter and they will not honor Expedia`s price. Best thing is to deal directly with the car rental company. Car rental in Mexico is like the the Mafia and loan sharks!
