Another audio option for the Hero 8 is to use the audio adapter for the 5/6/7. It's $30 cheaper than the media mod and still lets you charge and plug in the external mic. Cold shoes can be added with an aftermarket cage. Many previous go pro users have one of these already.

Thanks Drew! There are a TON of great mics out there. But a shotgun mic like mine is killer since you can use it for about anything. The trick: put it on an arm mounted to your desk and keep it 6-8 inches from your mouth, just out of frame, above you and pointing down at your mouth. Getting it close to your mouth is WAY more important than the $$ you spend on your mic. You can use it for studio, zoom, vlogging, about anything. A like the fact that the GoPro light is small enough to fit on the camera with the media mod mics. That will allow me to get the camera in tight spots and light up the area I'm working on, under vehicles, in wheel wells etc.. The Rode definitely sounds best. Agree with how you prioritize all the 4 options. The Lav doesn't sound as Bright and "realistic" as any of the other 3. But that's probably a quality issue of that cheap mic. Great vids as usual Trevor. Wish you were my next door neighbor here in Colorado. 🤣

I work as a pro sound engineer and do recording and post production mixing all the time (have done for 30 years), so I own and deal with a lot of mics, here's my take after listening to your audio comparison. 1. Rode Video Mic Pro is far superior to all the others in this test. 2. Both of the Gopro mics sounded ok although they pick up more room noise than the Rode as they are not as directional. 3. The problem with lav mics - it's not just about proximity to the source (your mouth), it's about the directionality of the microphone (lav mics are generally omni-directional so pick up sound from all directions) but more importantly your chin is between your mouth and the mic, and the human voice sounds very different from down there compared to when it is picked up from in front - it will lack top end clarity and have a weird midrange because of the masking effect of your chin and the proximity to your body. Doesn't matter how good the lav mic is, the position of the mic will compromise the sound. So lav mic's are great when you are somewhere that you are further away from the camera mic or you cannot get a mic directly pointing at you, it's the best option in that situation. But I would almost never use one in the studio if you have the choice of a reasonable mic coming from in front of you, the voice will sound a lot more natural that way. ps I use GoPro's quite a bit and the audio is not that bad considering it's price point. The Insta360 One R by contrast the audio examples I have heard are ghastly, completely unusable in my opinion. Thanks, good review! :)
THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU BUY BOTH. I've made a huge expensive mistake today. I bought the new GoPro Hero 8 Media Mod and Light Mod. However, I put the Light onto the Media Mod's top shoe facing the wrong way and now I can't get it off without breaking it or using tools.
Rode mic is definitely better sound. But for being on the go and it's compact size of a GoPro it's audio is good in my opinion. For the windy or background noise in clips can always do voice over with b-roll shots and a better mic. Thanks for doing this comparison!

But the problem I have that comes up while doing VO is it picks up background noises that are far away. I've been considering other options that don't pick up the sounds from a distance.
Having ALL kinds of trouble with my media mod. Mics pop and crackle(too hot?) And some times it doesn't even turn on to the external mic. So much prep needed with turn on sequence and verifying settings before I can record that it's almost annoying enough to return.
Same for me , the battery is running out of power within a hour. even the camera is switched off. Frankly the worst item I ever purchased, waste of money after all.

I looked up some more 'cinematic' settings on UA-cam. I think I turned sharpness and contrast down a bit? I can check and see if you'd like? Need to go grab it before I forget. And... my GH5 is currently on my RV roof - shot a time lapse of the moon. Need to go see if that worked! We're doing a the full time RV thing now. New channel!
Ok, got the GoPro down: ISO min and max 100, sharpness medium, color GoPro, Bit Rate High, shutter Auto. If there's low light, you'll have to bump up max ISO. This assumes a bright day. Hope that helps!

I received hero 8 media mod today one big problem it over heats the camera/battery. Very disappointed I am going to try formatting my nearly full sd card and factory reset the camera to see if that makes any difference.
Haha should have cleaned the GoPro lens lol !! You could tell it wasn’t clean from the flares off the lights in the background !! The Media Mod doesn’t sound any different from the built in mic lol definitely not paying the money for it
Funny -- what would I do -- for your application -- I would use the Media Mod with the Wireless Rode Microphone $200 -- it has a windscreen -- therefore you could be walking and talking out of frame -- and the audio would be PERFECT --true

I'd be totally hosed.... I tried to destroy the box for my Rode Wireless Go ii for an upcoming review. Fortunately, I failed - cause the mic was defective and I had to return it!
I have a media mod on order right now, and became concerned from all the criticism surrounding it. Your real-world testing has convinced me it is actually worth it overall. Mindful that the go pro 8 is utterly useless for low light situations and given the tiny output of the light this iappears to be the worlds most useless gimmick. But the casing unit is helpful to be able to attach an external microphone
Ya, I would not recommend the Light Mod - or shooting in low light with the GoPro. And yep, the best feature the media mod has is being able to attach a real mic! For action stuff and water stuff, the GoPro is great... when it's really bright outside!

I wouldn't use the mics on the media mod - plug in a direction mic.
