I'm more impressed with the diffused light than I would have expected without seeing the video. Thanks for your great reviews. I think I'm most intrigued by the media add on. Adding something like a wireless lav mic to a truly pocketable camera opens up a lot of possibilities.
Great video - thanks for the info. Good job showing with and without light different levels. Reading online specs, the 4th Level is overdrive. Quick double press on button will activate overdrive for 30 seconds.
Roughly. I think the key difference is the mount, as well as charging method. Most bike mounts are for handlebars and with the exception of the higher end or really low end ones, often pretty funky mounts. Whereas this has a cold-shoe and GoPro mount, so the use case slightly different. I greatly prefer the USB-C charging and the diffuser, so that's awesome. But yeah, in general I agree with ya.
@@Dcrainmaker Do you recall the QUDOS action camera light from bike light manufacturer Knog? (Which is now available as a knock off on AliBaba/TomTop for like 20 USD.)
@@Dcrainmaker The reflector and lens package is most important followed by the emitter. Then cooling, electronics controller and finally the battery. I doubt that any of it was specifically designed for a bike other than the mount. Also, I agree that it makes little sense to buy any rechargeable devices with anything predating USB-C connectors. Virtually every device failure that I've experienced in rechargeable devices had been caused by that stupid "micro B" port. I bought a Guee (Aero-X?) rear light that lasted less than 4 weeks at 2 (dark) rides per week. The Moon Cerberus (that has a type-C port) replaced it. #MicroBDelendaEst
That strobe part I like just because now on the MTB trail I see more and more people running, hiking & walking, but in the woods is hard to see who is ahead, but with that on my helmet they may see the blinking light and know I’m coming before I see them, because some times I don’t see them till I’m up on them, that way no one gets hurt! 👍🏼 thanks for the review
The strobe mode is something I would actually use on my road bike as a 'be seen' light. It will also tidy up my bike handlebar by needing one less mount for a separate bike light. I currently have a GoPro and a bike computer on a 'Bar Fly' mount and a light attached to a seperate mount on my handlebar. When I take into account my Knog bell (a bell is a legal requirement in Australia), the handlebar starts to get a bit crowded...
Thanks mate, hope your still out there ?. Just got a 10 and the light. Like you way too much stuff on my bar. With a Quadlock with cam adapter your suggestion will be great. Not sure how long the flashing mod light will last ?
There are actually 5 light modes. Low, Medium, High, Strobe and Overdrive. Quickly double press the power button and it’ll boost the illumination to 200 lumens for 30 seconds.
Loving the Media Mod setup along with my Rode Wireless Go - greta vlog setup. I've been toying with the idea of the LCD (have another LED light setup at the mo) the diffused option seems pretty solid though, and most importantly really compact!
There's a definite market for this beyond mounting to a GoPro. If you get an oportunity, see if it has any value as a fill flash with your Nikon or Panasonic.
Yup - I agree, lots of potential beyond just GoPro. Heck, even other 3rd party action cams. I played with it a bit on my GH5, and it does provide some fill, though also a bit of casting of lens shadows due to the lack of height. So it'll vary situation to situation. Cheers!
I could see me using it at a football stadium or boxing event for some vlogging. Bought one based on this review, and honestly will likely super glue the damn dome thingy to the light.
First question, does the hyper smooth not work during the night when you’re on the bike seemed very bumpy. Second question could you not use a bit of packing tape that really sticks well to tape the edges of the diffuser to the light so you don’t lose it. I think having the diffuser on all the time looks great m. Thanks for the video.
Thank you DC, as always super content! I just got the 8 for xmas, waayyy too many features for my simple self, just trying to figure out the best set up to use it while i ride. Happy New Year!
Yup, it works for visibility in flashing, though the pattern they used isn't terribly awesome from a cycling standpoint. It's a very 'gappy' pattern in that it has a longer delay when off than on. It's fine in a pinch, but I wouldn't use it as a daily driver on a commuter bike.
1 click is good without the defuser. For vlogging and 2 or 3 clicks with it on. But if your exploring a cave or haunted house or at night then 3 clicks without the defuser is perfect.
Love love love the little light diffuser. I’ve been using it for some time now. But is a POS in the area or staying on the light mod. If you breathe on it, it falls off. I came here hoping there was a “tip” in regards to this problem.
Thanks for the review. Do GoPro and many modern manufactures think about the logistics of release of products??!?! Why release the light before you can mount on the media unit that is yet available?
Is it me or does the colour temperature change when the diffuser's added? Looks to me a little warmer than without, which is a good thing as it looks overly cold without, for my eyes...
Good stuff. I've been using a Sony X3000 for a few years for running and biking vids; any thoughts on how the H8 compares overall? The X3000's lack of true waterproofness without a case is a let down. Seems like the Hero 8 finally really bests it for video quality.
Yeah, I think you'd be blown away by the Hero 8 to be honest. Not just from a video quality standpoint (it easily wins on stabilization these days, even against the optical stabilization of the Sony's), but also audio. Of course, the biggie you might think is waterproofing...but honestly it's just usability. Now's the time though, the $349 deal on Amazon with the whole bundle kit is astounding. Something tells me the media, screen, and light mod were a panic release from GoPro to keep up with the Osmo action. Hence the major delays
Probably. But the Osmo Action was out in early 2019 so these very basic devices should not be that difficult to engineer quickly.
I never thought I would buy this light until I saw this post. I have a lime-cube but I love this size better. Thank you for your input.
Lumecube sucks, it overheats badly and has a very short battery life. Oh and it's a massively HUGE light for no reason.

I'm sure you already figured this out but the 4th level is when you double tap the button it gives you more light but only for 30 second intervals.
Sending out the light mod without having the media mod first. What a joke 😀
For the low lumen output, it seems decent actually! I thought it wouldn't nearly be bright enough.
