- Welcome back to another Nicht Uber Max BMW motorcycle tech video right here on the MOA's UA-cam channel. We hope you'll like, comment, ask questions, subscribe, ring the bell and continue supporting the MOA with your membership.
BMW Motorrad has entrusted us (the MOA) with one of their 2021 R 18 First Edition motorcycles. Part of owning a motorcycle is taking care of regular maintenance, preferably on the manufacturer's recommended schedule. This video shows you step by step how to change the engine oil and oil filter on the R 18.
Tools needed:
* Torque wrench!
* T50 and T25 torx drivers
* oil filter tool
* oil fill plug tool (on the bike)
Parts/supplies needed:
* 4 liters of BMW's specified oil, $15 per liter
* oil filter, $19.97
* crush washer for oil drain plug, $1.79
* rags
* drain pan(s)
Please responsibly recycle your used oil and oil filters. If you don't know where or how to do this, check with your dealer, county or city, or a local auto shop or auto parts store.
We do not provide any torque values in this video for one simple reason - you should always look up the torque values appropriate for your specific motorcycle. There is too much variance between models and even model years to reliably state the torque values appropriate for your motorcycle. ALWAYS USE A TORQUE WRENCH!

Thank you for a very concise and informative Video and for not using any 'FOUL' language. I have had 5 BMW's over the years and this R18 may be the next one. I am 6ft-5in tall and 350 lbs and I need to do the ergonomics test and a test ride first. :) 89 motorcycles and 50 years of continuous riding!!!!
At last a man who knows what he's doing 😁 I've seen a few videos of guys doing an oil change on their motorcycle and not filling the new filter with oil before fitting 😮 and I scream at the monitor every time lol,
But you sir are the first I've seen and thought I was the only one 😶 but now there is two of us to show the whole world how it's done lol (I'm sure there maybe a few more in the universe some ware😃) lol
Excellent now I know it's safe to follow your channel cuz you know what your doing 🤣🤣🤣
Greetings from the UK and I dig the beard 😉
Till next time and remember to keep it Rubber side down 😎
It really only works if the filter goes on vertically, otherwise the oil dumps out :)
Thank you, very clear and detailed instructions, the best I have seen.
Excelente tus videos sobre los distintos cambios de lubricantes en una R 18 , me viene muy bien ya que estoy por adquirir una R 18 , muchas gracias por compartir y saludos desde Argentina .
very professionell and sympatic
Thanks for this. Looks like a piece of cake!
Very thorough. Great video.
Much appreciated!
Excellent (and much needed) video. Thank you!!
That was a very good video and you have some skills. Attention to detail was definitely there. Thanks for the video
That’s an awesome video. I really appreciate it.
Nice video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 super info 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
excellent. Thank you
An Art ritaul to change anything on this monster :-) Nice to see the carefullness :-)
Thanks dude.
Hi Thank you for showing how its done, I have watched all of your R18 maintainance videos. Please can we have one on rear wheel removal ,as I do not know where to position the box scissor jack, and properly remove the wheel the hand book not much help, Thanks again Eddie (subscribed member)
As soon as we get ahold of another R 18, we'll do more videos.
Thanks
Very helpful video. Thank you. I assume the R18B will be similar.
It should be - the engine is the same across all the variants.
Thank you
11 nm oilfilter torchvalue like the bmw r 1200 c. i picked it up from the bmw orig-book
That drain plug looks very hex like. My 2009RT is a 8mm hex.
you are correct, an 8mm hex fits better (also use an 8mm hex for the trans fill plug)
Great video and very informative 👍. Is this the 1st service of R18 from BMW? What do they do for the 1st service? Let me know pls. Thanks.
Yes, this was the first service - at least the fluid portions. The official first service for the R 18 is just for the engine and final drive - they don't change the transmission fluid even though I did. They will also go over the bike front to back and make sure everything is tight and properly adjusted. I did this too, but that would have been a pretty boring video :)
Do you think it's worth it and pay $420 just to look, inspect and tighten some of the bolts?
@@noelpogiako1 IMO having a dealer tech trained on the motorcycle do the initial service is always worth the money. Having said that, I have done the break-in service on several of my personal motorcycles.
Oil filter 11 NM 👍
Can you make a video on how to reset the oil service interval?? Thank you
as soon as I can get ahold of another R 18, I'll give it a shot
The bmw bike filters don't have a check valve, Bosch 3330 or cross overs do and are the same mounting dimensions, they are long like the old 1150 filters though.
thanks for that info
@@BMWMOAorg you're welcome :)
Where do you get the torque values, I couldn't find them in the manual, thanks.
How bout a Video of how to adjust the valves on a R18?
Thank you
If we get ahold of one at the valve check/adjust interval, we will do that!
Does anyone have experience with oil consumption before the first service? I picked up my r18 first edition a week ago and the oil level well below the circle at 400 miles.
Careful to not over titan the drain plug as it 's threaded into cast (soft metal body) 👍 hand tite and a tiny bit more should do it (the same as any oil filter ) and as you rightly said always replace the crush washer. 😎
recommend using a torque wrench on the drain plug
Nice video- what is your name?
What stand is that? I've been looking.Thx
just a regular stand - the lift is nothing special (tho big enough for ATVs with the "wings" on) and the stabilizer is just a flat-top scissor jack
W
how do you reset the service light?
I used a GS-911 to do this one; most dealers will reset the service light for you as well ... many of them will even do it for free! (but not all)
@@BMWMOAorg thank you for the info. I did contact the maker's of the GS-911 and because they had never had a R18 to test it on, they couldn't tell me. Thanks again!
Just got off the phone with your mother. She says you don't wear gloves when you should, and wants to know when you're ever gonna call her.
bmw needs to release the service manaul for this bike we have a right to repair our own equipment
I agree! Having access to service manuals would make many lives easier when it comes to routine maintenance.
I tell ya, that's involved!! My Honda Valkyrie is so, so much easier to change oil. Them Germans are nutz!
Should mention the torque for the drain plug. We understand you may have found an inaccurate value, but nevertheless, this otherwise very fine instructional video is sadly lacking when you withhold essential information.
I don't give torque values. The rider should look them up to verify them for their motorcycle.
16:45. What...is that red button???? I have the R18 TC and I don't have a red button? What gives BMW???
I must know what this red button is for!!! LOL
It's not a button, it's a cap covering a (positive) battery connection point. Because the battery is buried inside the motorcycle a bit, it's easier to connect a battery tender here than anywhere else if you don't have a pigtail installed. There's a matching negative connection point on the underside of the right cylinder.
