    Have been watching your for years. You have grown. This quilt blows me away. I also do machine embroidery. I am imagining my steam punk designs from Urbin Threads. Just my preference. I will keep watching you. Older ladies are cool and interesting. 🙃

    This is such a wonderful quilt for men. There needs to be more designs for men,like tools, firemen, policemen, fishing, hunting, hammers and nails and other tools. All the traditional ones are still beautiful but I go for more whimsical and creative type of stuff and I love applique. Really nice quilt, Rob!!!

    SO impressed by your use of both high contrast AND LOW-CONTRAST blocks! I've never seen anyone before recognize the importance of these two groups, and use them both in one quilt so effectively! Thank you very very much for making such an excellent example! I am inspired and will use this tutorial often. :D

    When I saw this, I thought perfect design for my mechanical engineer son. Also, I do appreciate the lesson on how you sorted the color. My last art class was in 1978.

    You solved my problem in making my daughters boyfriend a Christmas present a couple years ago. He is a creator and designer in mechanics and when I saw the gears I knew this was perfect. I printed out my designs from your templates and with a LOT of cutting, etc I designed my own layout. He loved his wall hanging. Thank you Rob.

    I am a big fan of Steampunk ! I love this quilt. I am going to have to check out the Sizzix die for the gears. I do paper crafting also and the papers for Steampunk are awesome. I think with some imagination and your skills you could convert the designs into other quilts. You are a great example of what you can do if you just try. You are also very entertaining.

I do not have a Sissix so thank you for alternate ways to cut the gears. There are websites with steam punk machine and hand embroidery too. I'll be following you from now on! Thanks for making my day!

    Wow! I learned so much from this tutorial--especially on color and color placement in a quilt. I can't wait to try the shading of colors in a quilt using the 5 inch pinwheels and shading in applique. I don't see myself using the gears in my quilts, but something different for shaded applique. I have already watched this video 2x and see it as a great resource! Thank you, Rob!!

    I just recently looked up 'steam punk' myself, not wanting to ask my son what yet another thing means..LOL. Anyhow, the vid of yours that I just watched before this had a bit that reminded me of steam punk art, and then this one...LOL. I love the way you do your color gradients, from dark at the bottom left and light at the top right. That's the way I always see gradients too. Thanks for the tutorial, it's an awesome looking quilt!

    *SQUEEE* I LOVE THIS QUILT!!!! You have SUCH a killer, artistic approach to all of your quilts, that totally blows me away. Not just the gradient color changes that create movement, but the attention to your "light source" and the addition of the subsequent shadows and their placement, are all fanTAStically artistic details, with huge wow factor. AND it's created in that trademark MSQC, omg I can totally do this at home like Rob(or Jenny) just did it type fashion!! I would love to be a fly on the wall to watch your creative process when you are designing quilts. Fanfreakingtastic tutorial and positively gorgeous quilt. Thanks for being awesome!!

    • @AdiarraS

      +Cheryl Land PS!! I love the fusion with the traditional broken dishes, with the modern gears...THAT itself is totally steampunk. (You might have guessed I"m into Steampunk?!?! lololol.) We did a Nor Cal wedding and So Cal wedding, both of which I crafted almost everything for. lol. One was full on Star Wars themed and costumed, the other a steampunk, Star Wars, Haunted Mansion, Disney fusion...I couldn't be more in love with this quilt (and the Star Warsiness of your last tut)...it speaks to the weirdness of my soul. lol

  • @ambernpetty

    If you don't have a die cutter but do have a Cameo Silhouette, you can use the Picscan mat to take a digital snapshot of the gear print out, or even input the PDF and make it a cut file, then you can just use a fabric blade to cut through the fabric and heat-bond material, easy peasy "die cut" applique pieces!
    Thanks for a cool tutorial Rob! My boys and husband always love your quilts!

    OK, first of all, I don't even know how to comment on this tutorial today! I couldn't even get my brain wrapped around all the great information you gave! The way you explained the colors of the background how to weave the light into the dark was amazing, and the concept of the shadows away from the light on the gears, wow! Your brain is so cool. The "fun" and amusing parts just give my brain a chance to "rest" from the next concept you introduce, and I am going to have to replay this one a few times so I don't miss all the wonderful techniques you "seam" lessly weave into your design concepts. You are way beyond just simple construction, into big thoughts on how you tackle your designs. Wow! Thanks again, you take me outside the box every time! I just learned what Steam Punk was from one of my dental patients a few weeks ago, and I feel so old! Lol! Have a great week!

    • @MrsMTMomma
      @MrsMTMomma 8 років тому

      +Lesley Gilbert you meant cutting mat, right? I don't think your blades would like a cutting board! Good tip. Thanks.
      BTW, I like the Olfa rotating mat a lot. I find the ballbearing type that Rob and Jenny use moves too easily when I cut. Must be a trick to using it that I didn't find

    • @lesleygilbert1945
      @lesleygilbert1945 8 років тому

      +MrsMTMomma - Yes, sorry, I meant cutting mat :) I also have a rotating mat. I read a comment on a sewing blog a few months ago that said if you have a large mat coming to the end of it's life, you could cut it up into smaller pieces and use as a rotating mat. Thanks for your reply :)

    Wow Rob I love this and it fits my youngest son perfectly...he will love it!!! I do have one question. The top thread is polyester, did you use cotton in the bobbin? Thank you for your great talent and willingness to share!

    Love the quilt. I have been toying with the idea of a galaxy quilt for my grandson....I noticed on MSQC that the fabric also comes in dark blue...perfect then I can applique the planets on. Since it is for his bed I will have to make it larger...what are the dimensions of your quilt so I can enlarge proportionately....didn't see the size listed. Great idea thanks...Love your Tutorials.....Barb

      +Barbara Frangella You can figure that the HST blocks are 6 1/4" and count them out on Rob's quilt. Or go to Quilter's Cache and look for the Broken Dishes block.
      I like your idea for the planet quilt. He should love it!
