These are Very nice cars and this Tbird is a Beautiful car and in Great shape. The Town Landau is a Rare thing to see in this 2 Year run in the Fox Platform. I was Really Surprised at how well the 4.2 Litre V8 Does I gues Maybe cause its a light car but the car moves. I would say there is Alot more Power than there is in a 87 or so Fleetwood I do ALOT of Unique Muscle, Classic & Euro cars and I sell them Cheap Call Anytime 406 544 6919

Reflecting a further industry-wide adoption of smaller vehicle designs in the interest of improved fuel efficiency and emissions compliance, the Thunderbird was redesigned for 1980 on the compact Ford Fox platform, which first appeared only two years prior as the basis for the Ford Fairmont. Compared to the previous Torino-based Thunderbird and its large 114 inches (2,896 mm) wheelbase and 215.5 inches (5,474 mm) overall length, the new Thunderbird lost 5.6 inches (142 mm) of wheelbase and 14.6 inches (371 mm) in overall length.[4] The squarish styling seen in the previous generation Thunderbird was favored for the new model, but the small car platform resulted in a poor translation with a distinctly upright appearance. Frameless door glass was no longer used; a chrome metal frame was used, making this car more like a two-door sedan. Combined with the poor performing 4.2 L (255 cu in) Windsor V8 as a base engine, this Thunderbird generation was not well received by the public. The available 4.9 L (302 cu in) Windsor V8 was a welcome alternative to the 255, but with only 131 horsepower (98 kW) performance was only modestly enhanced. Significantly, though failing to generate any new interest for the Thunderbird, a six-cylinder engine was made available for the first time in the Thunderbird's history in 1981, the 200 cu in (3.3 L) Thriftpower Six. For 1982 this was followed up with the replacement of the straight-six with a V6, the 3.8 L Essex, which was also now the Thunderbird's standard engine. Hurting the Thunderbird's sales performance further, the 302 V8 did not return for 1982, leaving the 255 as the only alternative engine. At 288,638 examples produced between 1980 and 1982, the eighth generation Thunderbird was barely more successful than the final model year of the previous Thunderbird generation.[1] In order to revive the Thunderbird's success, a redesign was needed and Ford would deliver one for 1983.

I love this particualr style of the Ford Thunderbird, the Town Landau has always been my favorite. Plus the electronic instrument panel is so cool!
I own two of these both from 1981. The Town Landau and the base model. I absolutely love them.
Beutiful T bird I grow up in the 80s and these were the best looking T Birds.
I was born in 1970 so I remember when these were brand new on showroom floors. A friend of mine drove I think a 1981 T Bird when we were seniors in high school. His had the 200 straight 6 in it and it was frighteningly underpowered. I know that the Ford straight 6 engines were about bulletproof but that 200 really lacked power. If Ford had used the 250 instead it would have made a big difference. These T Birds were stopgap cars but they had nice interiors with a lot of features.
A 305 in a G-body would easily blow away any 255 V8 but I agree this engine when attached to the 4 speed AOD transmission wasn't as slow as many claimed. We sold several just like this at our southern car dealership during the 90's so had much seat time in these Fox body cars. This one is a beauty.

The beauty of the fox platform is that you can easily adapt any mustang performance part on any other fox. I have a 1985 ford ltd lx that I converted to sefi and has a 93 svt Cobra drivetrain in her with true dual exhaust. It runs like stink and surprises quite a few people :)
My grandma bought a red Town Landau in 1980. I was seven and thought it was the coolest car ever. All digital dash, burgundy leather seats, white landau top and pin striping,sunroof and the sound of that V8!. Ford was really ahead of is time. '80-82 Tbird is really slept on.
Not a Heritage as you stated in the beginning. This is a middle of the road Towne Landau. The Heritage would have Heritage badging on the fenders, a solid acrylic hood ornament, pin striping on the hood, and a wide, brushed aluminum band over the roof, kinda like the old Crown Vics. I have a white Heritage.
OMG!!!! Fuckin hard to find these largely because when they came out the styling was not to everyones taste (personally I love it!!!) and the technology used in them was ahead of its time too, and yes that is excellent gas mileage for a V8!! Favorite color too!!
Black and white are shades not colours. A common mistake.

I had one like that but mine was blue back in 1995, had it re painted midnight blue with blue flakes and the vinyl had it replaced as well with a black one, couple of months later found in a junkyard all of the original metric wheels....now my baby was complete.

To set the clock:
*Pull out the "Date" or "Time" button.
*Take a pen, nail, stylus from your i-pad, etc. and push the small buttons on the upper corners of the clock display. They look like two little divits for screws...The one on the left would change the month or hour, depending on what mode you are setting, and the right button changes the minute. As I recall, the numbers only advance up, so if you go on number too many, you cannot go back, and have to cycle through until it has the correct time.
I had an '82 Mercury Cougar, which was very similar to this T-Bird. It had the same dash and the engine was a 255 cu/in as well. Up until the the engine started succumbing to wear, it was regularly getting 22 to 26 mpg on the highway.
My mom had one of these in the 90's it was silver with red interior I loved this car. I'd walk around from the back seat to the front seat my mom said it had lots of room. Different times my mom never made me put a seat belt on I guess. Lol

Not a problem, you're Welcome. This car is wrongfully ridiculed for no legitimate reason in my opinion. The engine was a decent size V8, it was luxurious in the high end model(s) i admit the base model was crap whereby you could buy a Ford Fairmont with the same base model options that's equipped on a T-Bird and pay less money. But overall the body style was suitable for the times and similar to the Cutlass Supreme,Monte Carlo, Grand Prix & Regal I can't understand why it only lasted 2 years
That body style actually lasted three years from 1980 to 1982. But that was how often Ford would always change the body style of the Thunderbirds.
That missing emblem on the trunk, left side, may very well have said "Automatic Overdrive".
I remember when I saw my Fox Body. It was a 1981 Town Landau with paint they called White/Bright Bittersweet
My grandma had a 1989 Thunderbird 3.8 LX with wire wheels, white w/ blue interior, until about twelve years ago before she bought a brand-new 2000 Civic Sedan. She loved that car, but it was rusting, and her mechanic at the time said it was going to cost more to fix then it would to buy a new car. I liked it too, had every option except the leather interior.
I like it! loks alot newer than 82 actually, reminds me more of early 90's Lincolns, because the bumpers isn't chrome/brushed steel
My sister had a 1980 T-Bird that looked very similar to this. It had a V8 302. It was so quiet the first time I ever dove it, I couldn't tell if the engine was running after I had started it I drove it the summer of 1988. It had a sun roof that I thought was awesome. Hers had burgundy red interior and pin-striping. I think the window vents and side rear window were slightly different on her car. I have the coolest sister for letting me drive it!
Those Fox platform T-birds are getting pretty rare. That is a nice example of one.

I had a 1980 Thunderbird with a 302 in 1988 when I was a senior in high school. It was red with a white vinyl top and red cloth interior. It had its problems, but not as many as you'd think for a first year of any domestic car back then. Very smooth ride and a pleasure to drive. I have to say if it was not immaculately cleaned and waxed it looked like a beater. Otherwise it was a pretty car that people thought was far more expensive than it actually was. I'd love to have a Silver Anniversary or Heritage. I love these cars and don't believe they deserve the disparaging they always get.

Not 1980 to 1982 when they made this style.
That third brakelight on the trunk lid was added; those weren't optional (or standard) in 1980 and became a government mandate item on the 1987's. I owned a 1980 Thunderbird Town Landau.

Indeed, like you said, the Lincoln Mark 6 was very rare to see on the road, but they were oh so sharp! Especially the designer series Mark 6s.

I recall that these were marketed as "downsized".
Well, they were downsized from the 1977 model, but they sure were not lightweight cars!
And this body was also available as a "Cougar", but I sure did not see many of them on the road.

My Grandmother had one of these, (Heritage edition ) Landau top with stainless trim, fully loaded offwhite/Beige on Beige cloth interior. She only put 6000 kilometers on it from new then parked it for 25 years. My Grandfather started it every month drove it to the end of the driveway and parked it back into the garage again. Unfortunately the gas went bad and we had to have the tank cleaned out, then it was one thing after another, the entire digital dash shorted out and burned up, all the gaskets started to leak, the radio stopped working, the automatic lights stopped working, the HVAC started to act up so I ended up selling it to someone that was willing to sort it out again cause I needed a reliable car and couldn't afford or find the parts to make it 100% again. Aside from that it was in showroom condition, a true time capsule. The 302 was pretty powerful, decent amount of torque, the C4 transmission was smooth, the suspension was soft, and was a classy even somewhat sporty car. I wonder if it's still on the road??? BC Canada...
I've heard the worst thing you can do to a car is let it sit, that's kind of a shame what happened... It needed to be on the road more, more than just that amount and tended to a bit. Makes me wonder, did they just start driving another vehicle or what. Thanks for the written though.
I could be mistaken but I think the 3rd brake light on the trunk lid is an after-market item.
The third brake light was not legally required on new cars until the 1986 model year. I had an '82 T-bird back in 1989, and (long story short) the same one in 1996. There was no third brake light on it. I posted a more detailed history of my '82 T-bird on CerealMarshmellow's short version video of the same car(see).
This is a really nice car. Having said that, this was probably the low point for the Thunderbird during its history. Many folks thought the proportions were really bad. The underpinning mechanics - the Fox body shared with the lowly Fairmont and a variety of weak engines - were not up to snuff for the top-tier Thunderbird nameplate. But this was the early '80s so we'll let it slide. Very nice job with the aftermarket CHSDL.

Ford introduced the digital instrumentation in both models the same year of 1980. Coincidentally, after my cousin sold his 80 T-Bird, he bought a 1980 Town Car and that car too had the digital instrumentation. And yes that included the Mercury Cougar (only in the XR-7)
This was my 2nd car and I have to say it was for the most part a good car! The look was boxy looking but was in line of what was being made at the time. The motor was build like a bullet! Ran very good and strong! Note you weren't going to win a race in it but when you put the cruse on 60 it kept up easily! Did not like the signal ball joint front end. Drop down on me at a Mc dees. Good car. Not handsome but good!

The 1980 Ford Thunderbird/Mercury Cougar were believe to be the first American cars to offer digital instrumentation along with the warning chimes. The 1981 Lincoln Mark VI and Town Cars were the second.
Actually, the 1979 Chrysler Newport and New Yorker were the first American cars with soft warning chimes, and some GM cars dating back to 1977 (including the Corvette and Oldsmobile Toronado) had sounds that could be more accurately described as beeps rather than buzzers.

the 1980 Chrysler imperial also had the available digital dash. Although I have always been partial to Ford's digital dash. They are a lot easier to read.
I have to admit this Ford Thundermont looks nice. However, I'd like to find a blue 97 Bird with the 4.6 Modular and dual exhausts.

Very nice car, the last of the good looking T-Birds before they brought out that ghastlyMKV11 which just didn't look right to me. Looked more like something from acrossthe pond than from Detroit. Incidently, the front lights don't look the same.

Very Nice car and RARE! as hell! you may find an old 80-82 T-Bird but it probably won't be a Town Landau edition. Back in the 80's both of my cousins had 1980 T-Bird Landau's in 1981 Blue/light Blue leather Digital dash allow wheels Fully loaded. Man those cars were nice and i don't care what anybody says, those T-Birds were models of the time and it's a shame it only lasted 2 years. The technology was amazing for that time with the keyless entry and digital instrumentation. Very Unique car.

i had a 82 granada station wagon top of the line .
This was my first BRAND NEW car at age 18 with the same engine. I had no idea about the 4.2 255cu in V8 but I remember I bought this because the MPG said 18/25 (city/hwy) I bought this out of town and was I sry. I traveled to work 45 miles round trip and I was averaging way below the sticker. I kept going back to the dealer. The diagnosis was this engine had issues of all sorts. They discontinued the following year. I ended up trading 11 months later for a new Bonneville Coupe Landau.

No. I had an 80 w the 255. mpg was about 16 to 18 on a good day. And absolutely powerless. Dont get me wrong, i liked the car. And after swaping an 84 5.0 HO and a set of 3.45 gears, i liked it much better. Better brakes added, better suspention. Only fault was it had the 3 speed auto instead of the overdrive. But going from 120hp to 200 made a big difference. ;-)

302 and 255 refer to cubic inch displacement (cid). Metrically speaking, they were also called the 5.0 liter and the 4.2 liter engines respectively.
