LINCOLN TOWN CAR : WAS IT BETTER THAN THE CADILLAC?

  • TOWN CAR OR CADILLAC DEVILLE. LEAR WHY THE OTHER WAS BETTER
Lincoln's popularity has caused the term "town car" to become almost synonymous with Lincoln, but the truth is there have been town cars before the Lincoln version. In fact, the first town car was actually a limousine created in the early 1920s.
Surprisingly, the "sedan de Ville" was used as a model name by Cadillac to compete with Lincoln. The name De Ville which is French meaning “of the town”.
The sedan was the primary rival to the Lincoln Continental from the 1950s to the 1990s.
It is important to note that the Lincoln L Series car, despite its fancy appearance, was not regarded as a town car. Although Lincoln produced a town car design, it was still a variant of a limousine and the first Lincoln Town Car would not be available until 1980.
TODAY WE TAKE OUR VIEWERS FOR A RIDE THRU THE YEARS 1881 THRU 2011. THIS IS THE STORY OF THE LINCOLN TOWN CAR
Ford actually began using the name Town Car in it’s Continental lineup with the addition of two formal sedans known as the Town Car and Limousine. This took place thru the 1970s but I want to start with the first generation Lincoln Town Car which was released in 1981.
For 1981, the Continental name was replaced and the new Town Car name was used for the non-Mark Lincolns. The lineup was also simplified with the elimination of the slow-selling Versailles model. The sole engine was the 302 V-8 with fuel injection and styling was virtually identical to the 1980 cars with only minor changes. The new Town Car retained the prior Continental’s exposed oblong dual headlamps and optional digital trip computer display, and added a new key-pad entry system. Lincoln’s formal upright grille was naturally retained. These cars were unashamedly aimed straight at mature customers with money in the bank.
In 1982, Lincoln adopted the Mark-Series tradition of Designer Series editions as the Cartier Edition was shifted from the Mark VI to the Town Car, becoming the top trim level; the Cartier Edition would remain part of the Town Car line through the 2003 model year.

No Cadillac was better until the 80s when Cadillac goofed thanks to these emissions and CAFE under democrats in the 70s. That 4100 V8 was junk. Cadillac lost a lot of people to Mercedes and Lexus. Town car came to an end of its beautiful look in the 90s. Actually all GM and Ford products were best in the 60s and 70s.

Was born in 83. Grandma had a Town Car when I was born and bought a branded new one every 2-3 years. Riding with Grandma in luxury and then getting in my Mom's basic ass van with no a/c made me realize just how nice those cars are. Grandma drove only Lincoln town cars from 1980 to 2017 and then she bought a Lexus...I was crushed.

My everyday driver is a 2010 Ford Focus that I purchased new. Also, I currently have three vintage Lincolns: 1966 Continental Sedan in Venetian Yellow; 1976 Continental with Town Car option in Dove Grey with polished aluminum wheels; 1981 Continental Mark VI Pucci (full vinyl roof, lacy spoke wheels, and standard Fawn Beige metallic paint). My suicide door 1966 Lincoln is the most classic of all: incredible build quality and understated design. My 1976 Lincoln is much more flamboyant but still retains its stock appearance: crushed velour upholstery with unique scrolled stitching on front seat backs, large headrests, fully lined trunk, and half vinyl coach roof. It has an incredible ride with outstanding road presence...complete road isolation feeling like you are viewing the road as if it was a movie in a theater. My 1981 Mark VI Pucci is similar in engineering to the 1981 Town Car: very cushy ride and slightly better handling than my older Lincolns, but craftsmanship and quality of materials are not comparable to my older cars.

Had 2 1989 stretched TCs for our wedding in 1990. They exuded classiness in church driveway, one white & other was silver. They appear in several pics and a few sightings in video. 89 & older are the classiest of TCs whereas the remaining TCs are classy.

I have a 2004 premium TC with the LED/LCD dvd head unit and all the options available for that year. I love the car- and fords panther platform in particular.. I’ve had many MGM’s, and C Vic’s- the best to me is installing P71 suspension on the TC- handles well, holds all my tools I drag around with all the options you don’t get in a P71.
My only grip about the panther platform is the zero option for different engines - with exception of the Marauder- The TC most definitely should have had the 4 cam as an option and the 5.4 should have been an option for the p71 at the very least or the quad cam as well.

Wonderful ride, and gets 15MPG City, 22-24MPG Highway. It is my daily driver. Only thing I didn’t like is the orange side marker lamps. I changed them out, for 1988 ones. Back in the 1990's I owned a (museum quality) 1968 Lincoln Continental. It had two big "options" offered for that year. A 460 V-8 and a "Town Car" interior. I would assume that interior was also offered on the 1969 models as well. I do not, however, know which model year that interior option was first offered. The car was black (vinyl top delete) and natural leather seating. It was a superb automobile.

Town Car in the 80s was a conservative vehicle, with some refinements across the years it's nearly the same car 81-89, same design formula and size. while the competition experimented with downsizing and new technologies the Town Car stayed familiar and dependable. The 1990-97 followed the same principles and sold strong. But 98 on was too radical a redesign for many. 03+ restored some features. Town Car didn't change much after that and buyers stayed loyal. I see many original Town Car buyers still enjoying their Town Cars of all years.

Always loved Town Cars.. Ever since seeing the one our realtor had as a kid in the early 80's I asked my dad why we don't have a Town Car instead of the Camaro we had and he said those cars were for old farts! I hated the Camaro with the rear tranny hump splitting the back seat..I said one day when I grow up I will have one! Well I had a 1985, 1987, 1988, 1989 and a 2003! Loved them all aside from the 1985..all were used and in good to excellent condition aside from the 85.. My favorite styles were 85-89, 95-97 and 2003-2011..Loved my 2003.. It was like an old pair of comfortable shoes..it just felt like an extension of myself.. It just felt right..I loved that car! One feature I have yet to see on any car aside form a Lincoln is the power side vent window the small triangle that rolls down before the main side window does!

I inherited my dad's 1987 Lincoln Town Car in 1995. It was a nice, comfortable car with a good engine. The interior was fairly cheap though: the plastic door panels were already splitting after less than a decade (in spite of being garaged). And the car had a suspension squeak that couldn't be readily solved; a shop told me that FordMoCo had already stopped making the OEM plastic bushings for those at the time. And I finally decided to trade the car by 2000 because the air conditioner wasn't cooling the car, and at the time, switching over to R134 refrigerant was a pricey conversion. So these were nice cars, but could've been better.
