Some people didn't like this episode saying it was just filler but it honestly gives so much insight into Ellie's character and it showed how she developed survivor's guilt.
People who think this and Bill's episode are filler, and I try to be positive overall, but they are too simple minded to get the themes and what these episodes mean for the overall plot and theme of the show. Not to mention character development.
They're not filler exactly, I mean stuff does happen, it's just that they really didn't need to be an entire episode each. They're just stretching out the content to make the story last more episodes.
Right? People lack critical thinking skills and don't understand what filler is. Or maybe are so young they've never experienced tv that's not super streamlined to encourage maximum profit. People using the word "filler" in regards to entertainment is my pet peeve - this is, by every definition, NOT filler.
Exactly- providing backstory and motivation for a main character to explain their actions in the present isn't filler. If we only saw Joel's flashback with Sarah as its own episode halfway through the show, would that be considered filler too bc we only focus on Sarah's POV and not Joel's? I also think a lot of the ppl who complained abt this episode see Joel as the only main character when really it's Ellie, and this episode actually shows more of Joel than the original DLC did.
Ellie is 14 and Riley was 16. In case you don't remember, in the first episode Marlene mentioned Riley, asking whether if she thinks that she was a terrorist too and that she was the one to tell the other fireflies not to shoot her. In the second episode Tess asked Ellie where she got bit and Ellie replying in the mall, but also lying that she was alone there when it happened. And in episode 3 Ellie references the MK2 game with Riley and MIleena's finisher move. But yes, this is an episode that gives you a backstory for Ellie and explains why she is how she is. The survivors guilt over Riley caused her to have a huge identity crisis, which just got further amplified by the deaths of Tess, Henry and Sam, because all those bad things in this world are ultimately because of the infection, which she's the apparent cure for. So with her as a cure those things could be prevented and become better again, which is not just what drives her but also what turned to become her purpose in life. And yes, the season ends exactly like the game ended, except now you know there's a continuation of the story, which we had to wait 7 years for. Keep a mental note of Take on Me and the dinosaur reference you've cut out for later. :) Oh and TLoU generally is made for pain, but don't worry, Part 1 (the first game) isn't so bad.

The way Riley and Ellie traverse the mall more or less follows the life and death of the shopping mall in America. First instance the carousel at the beginning, basic amusement rides like that would have been a staple early on in shopping malls, followed by the arcade, which would have replaced carousels(notice how most of the games in that arcade were a mix of early 80's to early 90s). By the time they get to the last "wonder" of the mall, it was a halloween store. Malls were in decline by the mid to late 90's, if a mall was thriving then there was never a time where a shop space was empty, halloween stores which were only open a few months in the year were an early sign that a mall was dying since the space was cheap enough and only occupied three months out of the year.
Remember how Ellie was sitting with Joel and Tess went to search for route at ep1, and she asked - is it hard to kill infected knowing they were human once. And then, ep4, that she killed already... Not all of FEDRA officers are bad people, but they are in impossible circumstances.
Based on their Patreon they make soo much money each month, and good for them!, they could afford to make that entire wall a tv. They should atleast buy one 2 inches bigger than their current one. It's for their own business.
Ellie did use the horse to drag Joel to that house. In the game, it's a little more clear, just how she did it. I have no idea how she got him down the stairs.
Fortunately, Joel was stabbed with a (freshly broken) wooden bat, not something rusty. (That was just (brown) wood and blood (and a bit of blue paint) that made it look vaguely “rusty”.). So not getting tetanus makes sense, though of course the danger of infection generally is very high even though the inside of the bat was at least not too dirty since it just broke right before he was stabbed with it, and it didn’t have time to get very dirty.
Hah hah Riley climbing into Ellie's room reminds me that when I was in college there was a drunk guy who climbed into our window as we were asleep trying to meet the girls in the next room. When I woke up from a noisy dream I asked him what he was doing, he said sorry and I saw that my room mate in the track team had taken off like a rabbit leaving me there, lol.
You can also assume the officer just talked that way to Ellie knowing that approach may get through to her since he knows her personality. Hype her up like "you're a leader, you may be giving the Bethany's of the world orders" and Ellie goes "fuck yeah". So he may be a good guy but hard to analyze for the 3 minutes we saw him.
I'd say he seems to be pretty genuine, but like Riley says he's only giving her two choices and both include working for FEDRA. And he's definitely only interested in keeping the status quo - none of his arguments for becoming an officer involved actually changing anything for the better.

That way anyone who doesn't want to play the game can watch them or compare them to the HBO show. No spoilers but enough is different to keep it surprising whether you play the game first or not.
great reaction ladies. this memory of the night in the mall with reiley defines ellie and why she will never give up on joel. three weeks before that night when reiley meets marlene was the first encounter that assured ellie's life was going to change, the second was that infected biting them both. only three weeks after the mall, robert's double cross would force ellie to rely on joel, the one who would never give up on her. one thing... considering the pattern in the snow leading to the house ellie and joel are in and the large blood stain on the sleeping bag in the garage... it can be assumed that somehow ellie got joel onto the sleeping bag and was able to use a rope to tie the sleeping bag to the horse and drag joel to the house. btw ladies, your english is fantastic.
Riley said that her first assignment (Sewage Duty, PROTECTING sewage workers) was what Cpt. Kwong thought of her. Back at FEDRA, it seems that Riley constantly gets into fights and is constantly a problem trainee. That seems exactly the "mug" path described by the Captain. Do you feel that Riley deserved that first duty, or do you see her persistent behaviour as being deserving of a more "respectable" duty? I'm trying to understand the timeline here but Riley keeps saying Ellie instead of Veronica. I thought at this point in the show Ellie was certain her name was Veronica. Continuity issue? Or am I just not understanding the timeline? Or--? Earlier in this episode Marlene uses Ellie's real name as if to tell her that her name's not Veronica after all.
When the firefly’s asked Ellie her name she lied. But Marleen knew her real name which was why she used that knowledge as proof to Ellie that what she was telling her was true

My dad had to play that whole section for me during my playthrough so I could finish the game. I never replayed it because of that. But this DLC was very special to me. I happened to play it during a time in my life when I was just realizing that the way I looked at and thought about girls wasn't the way my friends did. This DLC, plus a few movies and books, helped me SO MUCH in figuring myself out, and will always hold a special place in my heart. I was glad it was incorporated into the show, and very happy that they did it justice (at least in my opinion).

this whole reaction got fucked by the fact that you kept waiting for something to happen. Instead of enjoying the beautiful side of this, the awesome moments, and just letting the episode surprise you in whatever way, it was just a non-stop discussion about how bad it is because something's gonna happen.
Almost every reactor I've seen (who didn't play the game) does that I've noticed. It's pretty funny because this part was DLC for the game so you kinda knew it would go bad there as well. But I still enjoyed all the cute moments,, which is kind of poetic because the theme is literally "we all die some day so we should enjoy it while we can and live in the moment".
