    Troy Baker (James) was actually the voice actor who played Joel on the game.
    They actually hunt human too for food. That's what they were doing when they found Joel and Ellie. That's why they run after them. They had a code for it too:
    Venison: human male
    Elk: human female
    Rabbit: human child
    James said at the beginning "they spotted some deer a couple miles east", he was talking about Joel. When you watch the episode again knowing the code it's very creepy. They talked in code so much that when David told James to get medicine for Ellie, he had to tell him that it "wasn't code". That he actually meant that.

    The ending puts so many scenes that happened earlier into an entirely different perspective. When they first meet at the deer and he tells James to go get the meds, James wasn't concerned for David's safety. He was concerned what he'd do to her. Then when they start hunting Ellie/Joel down David says to bring her back with them. James looks at David funny and pretty much knows. Then James proceeds to try shooting a downed Ellie. This was a mercy ending because he knows what David was going to do to her. Some nice subtle hints throughout.

    • @musicandmoviefan9217
      @musicandmoviefan9217 Рік тому

      I think you are giving him too much credit. He doesn't care what happens to Ellie and in fact he wants her dead because she is with Joel who killed a member of their cult. Its that simple. He doesn't give a rats ass about who David is abusing because if he did he wouldn't be following him.
      You say he was worried about leaving Ellie with David to get the medicine but again no. If that was the case when he got back he wouldn't have been about to kill Ellie before David told him to lower the gun.
      Cult members who follow Charismatic leaders like David convince themselves that what that leader wants is right and justified so in most cases where abuse happens they turn a blind eye to it or just plain don't care and these people were far more worried about survival than about sexual abuse...they were eating people ffs so their moral compass is definitely askew.

      I think you're really reaching with that one..
      The more obvious reason for James' concern/hesitation is that he immediately recognizes that Ellie (with Joel) is the girl they were told about that killed their friend..
      Also, there is no sign at all that James has any care for Ellie's wellbeing. So this mercy theory of yours is bogus..

      My only real issues were the pacing and the lack of infected. In the game there's just so much more time bonding with Ellie and exploring the world, which I feel felt a little flat and I also would've liked to see that Tess backstory that they had to cut out. And the amount of infected in the game show you so much better how fucked up the world actually is. In the show it almost doesn't feel that bad, which unfortunately makes the Fireflies and even FEDRA look worse than they are because it sort of undermines their efforts and decisions.

    Such a fantastic episode, Winter is my favourite part of the game and I'm sure alot of the fans feel the same, it shows just how much Joel and Ellie fight for each other, they need each other and I think the show did a great job capturing that.

    As mentioned by others, Bellie basically cleaved game Joel in this episode. In the next one you'll also see game Ellie's actress, Ashley Johnson, in probably the best & most poetic scene in the entire show. It will also feature another voice actress, Laura Bailey, which plays a minor role & character in there, just as in the first game (a few random NPCs basically), but she plays a major character in the second game.

    One of the very few reactors who's sadness for Ellie overshadowed their satisfaction with David's death. Honestly don't understand how someone could watch that scene and be hyped up cheering, "Hell yeah get him get him!"
    Does David deserve what he got, absolutely 100%, but the scene isn't triumphant. It's bleak and terrifying. It's supposed to make you sad that a little girl is put into a situation where she's forced to be this brutal to get away from these monsters.

    • @BubblyRainbows
      @BubblyRainbows Рік тому +3

      I can understand either way. It just depends on which feeling is strongest, really. Sympathy for Ellie or the need for "justice" for lack of a better word. I don't think most people who are cheering for Ellie don't feel bad for her also. They're just happier to see her defend herself than they are sad for her trauma. But I'm sure both feelings are there. I can't watch the end of the episode and I couldn't play this part of the game myself. I had to rely just on people summarizing it for me. But if I could actually watch the scene, I think I would probably be happier to see David punished. I know that many survivors of SA/CSA were praising the writers for having Ellie save herself rather than having Joel show up to help, because they found it cathartic to see a victim save herself in a way that many of us couldn't (but wish we could have). It was important to a lot of us that it worked out that way. Unfortunately, not all of us are in a strong enough mental state to watch that sort of thing to receive that catharsis. But I understand the need of some people to see David get what's coming to him being the strongest feeling in that moment. It's not because they don't feel bad for Ellie or see the tragedy of what she went through; my heart goes out to ANYONE who has ever been assaulted in that way to any degree. It's a trauma I wouldn't wish on ANYONE.

    In the game, the complete dialogue Ellie says when encountering Joel, is "He... He tried to..." and then Joel interrupts I believe either with more dialogue or with the hug. I think the way it was portrayed in the series is magnificent and very much clear, I just wanted to add this detail from the game because I think it to be particularly efficient in bringing home the whole point of cannibalism not only as a literal plot route, but also as a metaphor to the kind of abuse David was planning on carrying out with Ellie... I mean, the whole fight as well as their interactions were heavily sexually connotated and that's both disgusting and excellent in the ways it plays into Ellie's character build-up.

    32:39 haha her reaction was pure gold. For this episode I just feel they should've switch to the music of the game when Ellie chops David, which is a bit sadder rather than tense, It sends a clearer message of "look what she had to do in order to survive in this world", which is actually the reason why the camara points at her and not David. That said I loved this episode, it was fantastic.

    Venison originally meant the meat of a game animal but now refers primarily to the meat of antlered ungulates such as elk or deer. Venison can be used to refer to any part of the animal, so long as it is edible, including the internal organs

  • @Rogue_Satellite
    @Rogue_Satellite Рік тому

    Interesting fact. In English the meat of certain animals has a different name to the animal themselves. Beef and Cow, Pork and Pig, Venison and Deer, Mutton and Sheep.
    This is because in the 11th Century after the Normans invaded England most of the upper class spoke French. These were the people eating most of the high quality meat, so the name for the meat is derived from the French word for the animals.
    But most of the people tending to the farms and the livestock were Saxon and spoke old English. Thus the names of the animals is derived from a Saxon word for the animals.
    Anyway, great reaction. Glad your enjoying the show.

    As a long time fan of the games, I can say that they did a beautiful job adapting the story to television. They did remove a great deal of the action sequences, but for good reason: to focus on the characters, and make sure that the action that *is* there enhances the story. What we get is a more streamlined story, with honestly a bit more heart: Pascal's Joel is more deeply nuanced in his presentation, the Bill/Frank story was completely constructed for the show. Basically, the changes that were made were smart, and everything that needed to be the same, are nearly identical, sometimes shot-for-shot. I couldn't be happier with how they have done this, and I don't know how I'll be able to make it the 18 months (or however long) for the second season!
