This game is a successor to the old Wonder Boy series, which I never played before. But Monster Boy is not trying to imitate the old era of gaming, it's bosses are much more fun and it's a better game overall, in my opinion. It's a pretty good metroidvania with focus on solving puzzles and exploring areas for secrets. I almost got 100% completion, but unfortunately the very last chest I need is bugged and now I can't get my final trophies. Too bad. (Recent patch fixed that.)

The protagonist, in frog form, turning the entire room with his tongue, thereby dropping the Lion warrior on his head, makes absolutely no sense. Especially since the ancient frog, from whom he derived the stretched tongue, had no such ability!
This game's series has been around for longer then Shantae. Shantae wasn't even a concept until the Wonder Boy series (this game is a revival of that series) had allready come to a close. Not only that but the last Wounder Boy game had a main character that looked almost exsactly like Shantae. If anything I would say Shantae was copying off of this game's homework. Like stealing work from an old wiki article from the 90's. This game has references and recycled material from each of the Wounder Boy games. Don't go accusing them of ripping off a series that was only bringing back an OG franchise. It's not there fault Shantae used an idea that had been around a decade prior. It's not Shantae's fault either. The Wounder Boy series was thought to be gone, they were just utilizing ideas people did not use anymore. I welcome both games simply because I like this style of gameplay. It's not done often in platforming games and both games do it well. Monster Boy also makes use of equipment and RPG elements like stat boosting gear. Witch is something Shatae doesn't do, likewise Shantae introduces layered world progression witch is something that this game doesn't do. Each game has there differences, don't just focus on the animal changing thing. Heck that's not even a huge premise in the Shantae series like it is with this game series.

Don't go accusing them of ripping off a series that was only bringing back an OG franchise. It's not there fault Shantae used an idea that had been around a decade prior. It's not Shantae's fault either. The Wounder Boy series was thought to be gone, they were just utilizing ideas people did not use anymore. I welcome both games simply because I like this style of gameplay. It's not done often in platforming games and both games do it well. Monster Boy also makes use of equipment and RPG elements like stat boosting gear. Witch is something Shatae doesn't do, likewise Shantae introduces layered world progression witch is something that this game doesn't do. Each game has there differences, don't just focus on the animal changing thing. Heck that's not even a huge premise in the Shantae series like it is with this game series.
