This video not only managed to get me out of my 'CHARA is the devil of Undertale' phase (which admittedly every Undertale fan goes through at some point), but it also made me appreciate Toby Fox and his way of storytelling more then I already did.
Undertale is also the game responsible for breaking me out of my 'if a game is sprites, it's bad and old' phase and I'm so glad it did! Undertale will always be one of my most remembered games for that alone!

As long as you're on Pacifist - the gameplay is pretty intuitive and reasonably easy, with only a few battles that might take some good few tries.

I've heard that part of the villification was due to "SINCE WHEN WERE YOU THE ONE IN CONTROL?" being taken in the sense of them pulling the strings the entire time and the other part is due to how much harder it is to say the audience is responsible in a less interactive medium.
Deltarune would answer these complaints with its new human Kris, who is much shadier but also highlights how much of a bad influence the player is. Going through Chapter 1 results in neighbours praising them for being more friendly, which *sounds* like a good thing until you realize it's not due to character development, they're unintentionally implying they'd rather have a copycat instead. Meanwhile, going for 100% on a pacifist route results in traumatizing Kris as you deliberately ignore all the obvious signs. And as shady as they are, the things the Soul does are too much for their standards.

5:15 There are three entities involved in playing Undertale, Frisk the body that is puppeted through the underground, Chara a spirit that follows Frisk through the underground, and you the player the one who pulls Frisk's strings.
6:10 more specifically what you name Chara at the beginning of the game is on the stats menu.
9:06 There is a lot of meaning behind the Dreemurr name, in fact there is so much that it'll be better if you just look up the meaning behind all the Dreemurr's names yourself.

@@DizzyTheWizzy Alot of that can be chalked up to Chara being a child and not them being a bad person. Asriel themself agreed to the plan but only backed out near the end. Chara was most likely a victim before falling in the underground so they're hatred for humanity makes sense

    • @DizzyTheWizzy

@@stephaniejohnson5361 I never said it made them a bad person, just a flawed one. Just pointing out that even if Chara's intentions were good, they were still wrong actions. I feel as though they let their hatred for humanity lead them too much which is what made Chara bring their own body to the surface. Chara wanted to show Asriel how humans were, but inadvertently got their brother killed. While unintentional, it still was wrong. If Chara had perhaps set her hatred for humanity aside, they might have lived and possibly freed everyone. There's a lot of layers to this, and Undertale is a game about forgiveness and second chances and Chara's wrongs aren't any worse than other characters' so I still feel as tho they are just as deserving for forgiveness and second chances.

      -
That just make me think if Chara somehow survived(with they wouldn't if Undertale really was 100 years after Chara fell), would Chara also learn that humans aren't that bad in pacifist, and let their hate go? Probably, I'll think they be better at it than Sans, who even in a pcifist route say he would be dead if he didn't do the promise.

A Pacifist Run is when you go out of your way to spare everyone you come across, a Genocide Run is when you go out of your way to kill everyone you can find while a Neutral Run is basically variations of different decisions you made through the game. I've seen people online trying to justify the Genocide Run but honestly it can't be justified as a good thing since you can't enter the Genocide Run even if you kill everything in your way, you have to intentionally go out of your way to kill everything in each area to enter the Genocide Run.
And truth be told even the Pacifist Run isn't exactly perfect either since in order for monsters to reach the Surface they needed the human souls that goes without saying were acquired by less than peaceful means. In other words even the good ending isn't possible without sacrifice.

    • @orianefaton1885

Yeah... Like, I think there even was a shift in how the fandom call the genocide run, because of the fact that it may cause problem with social media to use that term (despite the fact it is very much what you are doing as the player).
Originally, "No mercy" just refered to a Nuetral run where you always spare "Fight" / Never press "Mercy". It was not like the genocide where, as far as I gathered (I refuse to do anything other than Pacifist), you have to actively go out of your way to do a genocide run. You can't do this one on accident.

I probably wouldn't be who I am if it wasn't for Amino. Also the first Amino community I ever joined, the one that made me download Amino in the first place, it's the official Glitchtale Amino.
And then, inspired by Glitchtale, I made my first real creative project ever and later my first Amino community based on it, the Reunitale AU. It was a stepping stone in my journey as a creator since it was the very first one.
I still have Amino to this day. There are way too many memories, posts, and friends on there for me to leave, though I'm not nearly as active as I used to be. It's just not the same anymore.

The interesting thing is, I actually went for something very similar in my own Undertale fanfic (which, admittedly, was written _after_ this video came out and I have been thoroughly indoctrinated into the "Chara is not a living ball of pure evil" camp). Basically, to put it in short, the first genocide was done by Frisk (who's standing in for the player, same thing was done with Glitchtale) just out of curiosity, and then all the subsequent nonsense is Chara (at least in their own twisted mind) giving Frisk the exact kinda punishment they deserve: forcing them to watch as everyone dies over and over again, as they can do nothing about it because their soul doesn't belong to them anymore. Of course, there's some other complications involving hate (ported in straight from Glitchtale) and Frisk willingly going through more genocides to directly meet Chara and take their soul back before Chara takes full control and goes on an endless genocide loop, as well as some funky custom lore I cooked up, but that's basically it as far as the relevance to this video goes.
If anyone wants to check it out, it's on Archive of Our Own. It's called UnderVow. People who read it have been liking it, so... yeah.

I would also mention that neither the Genocide or Pacifist Run are routes which you can access by accident. The neutral route is default but for pacifist you have at least the neutral route at least finished once and also backtracking to befriend some of the characters. The genocide run is also one where you basically spend a lot of time walking in a single area to fight and kill monsters until there aren't anymore. There are also multiple parts in the Genocide Route where you still have the choice to leave it and have a Neutral run again.
Which means whether you are a pacifist or genocidal murderer is technically never am accident but an active choice you have and make.

This person's video is 100% great and definitely my favorite read of Chara's character, if perhaps understating just how corrupted by the player Chara gets during the Genocide route (pretty much the moment the Genocide route 'music' kicks in, even way back in the Ruins, Chara's narration has already shifted color from white to occasionally red and the save points start listing 'how many monsters left' so um. I believe strongly in Chara being a good egg but I also heavily suspect monster dust + LV is like, IDK an addictive drug or something because the only hesitance you really get from Chara past that is with the Dremurrs -and Undyne is less hesitance and seems to more them being absolutely hyped at seeing a True Heroine and then falling quiet when they realize you're winning).
That said, having been an Undertale and Undertale fanwork fan since around the time this video came out, I think part of people saw Chara as evil also had a lot to do with how Chara's contributions were incredibly subtle aside from the Genocide ending stuff, and players were often distracted by the twist that they were not playing Chara but Frisk; start of the game you're asked to 'Name the Fallen Human'. This human is 'Chara' whereas Frisk's name is not able to be changed and is only able to be learned at the end of the True Pacifist route AFTER players are already reeling from learning that they aren't the 'Chara'cter that they named, and said kid's death wasn't an accident, and well not a lot of people tend to think of game plots and characters logically so much as through feels and boy does the name 'Chara' get associated with bad things in the True Lab and Flowey towards the end there.
...Also I don't think people realize how awful death by buttercup poisoning is (thing about buttercup poison is it's a contact burning/blister causing poison mostly there to cause things trying to eat it to go 'ouch' and stop, so to actually die from it would require DAYS of internal agony, actively continuing to eat the very painful flowers, and if you stopped at any point before the blisters on your insides popped you could still probably be saved from death -if admittedly with permanent health problems- So yeah. THAT'S how determined Chara had to be to die, and like. There's not a whole lot of reason to die like that in the Underground filled with ledges, rocks and even blunt knives unless death by buttercup induced agony was the point -Chara REALLY didn't take accidentally poisoning Asgore well at all I don't think... D'= )
(Side note: ...I do kinda think Chara manipulated Asriel into helping them commit suicide sadly. Not as a 'master manipulator mwahaha' kinda thing but just... As a very hurt, very guilt ridden and emotionally messed up kid feeling that what they're trying to do is their ONLY way to set things right and insisting the other kid goes along with their terrible idea because 'you trust me right? You said you'd always trust me' and like. That's some pretty damn heavy stuff to deal with when you're like 8 and slow enough on the uptake that you didn't realize going to get the other six souls would presumably involve murder. Damn sad stuff all around honestly).
That said, I'm very glad to see that for the most part videos like this and the plot stuff in Deltarune (where the player being the villain is much more blatant) seem to have helped a lot more of the Undertale fandom to recognize Chara as the well intentioned helpful narrator in all routes they are as well as the 'corrupted red narrator' they are only in that one very specific route, if only because holy hell were the fanworks overdosing on evil Chara back then; forget how messed up the 'victim blaming/scape goating' of Chara is, the real sin was how omnipresent that idea was... >__

This kinda reminds me of Kieran from the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet DLC. I saw people getting annoyed because he's "selfish" and stands in our way.
But he only does so because we, his only friend, lied to him and took the side of his toxic sister who mentally abuses him. This is our fault. Well, also Carmine's because she proposed the idea and she sucks. But we accepted to lie to Kieran. We're also responsible. People just don't like getting consequences for their actions.
The thing Game Freak did wrong here is that lying to him is not an option. This choice is forced upon us, even if we don't want to lie to him, and we're forced to see him descend into an obsession for more power since he feels betrayed and alone.
This is an incredible story and character arc. But if we didn't want to lie to him and want to be there for him, we can't. We have to keep lying because the game forces us to. And it's sad to see him go down this dark path, but unlike in Undertale, there's nothing we can do. The game makes us go through the consequences of a choice that wasn't ours. And that sucks.
They should have given us the choice to lie to him or not, giving him a happier ending if we decided to be honest to him. That's something a lot of people, including me, wanted to do.
And if we decide to lie, the story is what it is in the DLC. But the people who lied would deserve the consequences since it truly was their choice, unlike in the actual DLC.

The bullet patterns are probably the easiest part in UNDERTALE. Since you can always fill your inventory with healing items from the nearest shop. The puzzles in this game are not insanely difficult except for maybe one or two exceptions. (Hotland vent puzzle.) You’ll probably be able to beat the game pretty easily. All of the above does not apply to Genocide.
Toby designed the neutral and pacifist routes to be easy so people with low skill can still enjoy them. I‘m sure my Mom who never played a video game before could beat it eventually.

  • @troublesomezorua

If you'd like a little hope about the Asriel thing. There was originally going to be an Undertale clock app, which under certain conditions would reveal little skits and lore scenes. The app was cancelled but Toby Fox did release the dialogue of all the events. In one of them (after True Pacifist) there's a cute moment where Flowey helps Toriel. Of course it's Flowey so he spends the entire time basically bad mouthing her and showing how he "totally doesn't care", but it's quite clear he does. Taking that into account and the fact he seems to be getting his emotions back towards the end of Genocide, and I really do think that with enough time his situation is going to improve.
Also if you ever hear about Chara and Asriel always filling up glasses of water until they're just over the brim to maximize efficiency (and leading to many accidental spills), that's also from the clock app.
The issue of so many evil routes feeling lazy or unfinished has always really bothered me. Although as I've also talked about, so many times they often feel less like an evil route and more like a jerk route. That's the big reason I've never done Renegade Shepard, as everything I've read has basically described it as being a jerk while also focusing solely on humanity with little-to-no regard for any other species. Basically the anti-Chara funnily enough. Thematically I find that unpalattable (and I'm not usually that big on humanity in most settings myself), so yeah, Renegade had zero appeal for me. But if there had been like a route to betray everyone and form my own cosmic empire, or use the reapers to purge all life, or something like that I'd do it in a heartbeat! So basically I think it's important to differentiate between "types" of evil and not just whether people pick good or bad options.
I'm also now very interested in what percentage of players picks each of the final options as well. I kind of suspect that "Do Not" is more common which I find disappointing. It's like trying to score a couple points at the very last second. Like you burned down the building but at least tipped the driver for your getaway taxi so you're not a bad person. Just feels kinda cowardly I guess; you're a destroyer of worlds now, have some pride!
On that note, if you do end up playing it, I'd personally recommend at least giving the early Genocide run a try before watching someone else do it. As while it's one of my favorite things to see people's reactions to, I feel like watching it doesn't really get across the more calming side of it. Maybe it's just me, but going back and forth as the slower music plays is incredibly relaxing and kind of cozy, and watching it really doesn't express that side of it. I can 100% see bailing before the end for many reasons (the final area can best be described as "SOUL-Crushing Tedium") but I can't overstate how much I love the atmosphere in the early areas. Also, perhaps unpopular opinion, but I find the Genocide version of Snowdin considerably funnier than the Pacifist/Neutral version. That's something else that doesn't get brought up; the sad and intense moments obviously get plenty of focus, but a good chunk of the game's funniest lines are actually Genocide-exclusive as well. Burgerpants' conversation is especially amazing.
As for deepdiving into how it works. As far as I know there are two variations of the Genocide ending. Both of which were shown in this. More interestingly, Sans actually has two unique intros outside of the normal ones based off your deaths. If you kill him and then reset the game without saving so you can kill him again, he'll comment that you're kind of a freak. Do it AGAIN after that and he'll be so disgusted he doesn't even want to talk to you I believe. I sadly have done this, it was as painful as you imagine. It also furthers the Flowey connection; I saved over his death so I could kill him over and over, which is what Flowey threatens to do to you at one point. There isn't anything for multiple pacifists (although you can get subtle changes to pacifist based on certain battle actions), however if you defeat Sans and get a bit further, then quit Genocide and do neutral/pacifist, Flowey will get really angry and confused, before deciding you just want to play around and having a little friendly moment between you that I really like. It was also the first combo of routes I ever did, so that scene has a lot of significance to me personally.
And I totally do the resetting over dialogue choices thing too. It's why I really dislike options that change tone considerably from the option to the spoken version, which is way more common than you'd think!
And yes; it's made very clear that Asriel's boss form is his super awesome OC. It's even more apparent in Japanese, as apparently he takes on a more threatening speech pattern then as his cool breaks slowly loses it and goes back to his normal one.

The game remembers what you did before, if you lets say accidentally kill Toriel and reset, Flowey will comment on it. It is also implied that Sans knows about Resets, he doesn't know when that happens but still knows of its existence.

Plus, of course the dead corpse of the weird first human coming back to life to frighten you would be in the genocide route, that thing is creepypasta-like! If you think the reruns for genocide are crazy, you should see the neutral endings! I think there are 20+(?) different variations for a neutral path (plus a bunch of neutral run judgement dialogue), along with pacifist/soulless pacifist + genocide. (Based on what i know)

There’s a theory this game is related to Earthbound?

Now that you are done with Glitchtale and learned more about Chara, you should watch Underverse to learn about to the AUs more. You can watch Xtale first to learn more about Underverse itself and how the events came to be, but you don't really need to.

6:17 The name on the stats is whatever name you put at the begining of the playtrough when the game ask you to "Name the fallen child", every mention of Chara gets remplace by whatever name you put in there, the reason everyone knows their real name is Chara is that if you write Chara when the game ask you to name the fallen child a text apears saing "The true name" there are other funny dialogs that can apear if you try naming them as other Characters.
9:21 Dreemur is also an anagram for Murderer, Asgore an anagram for Sage_or, Asriel an anagram for Serial y Toriel is a pun on TUtoriAl, Toby fox(Undertale and Deltarune(also anagrams of each other) creator) aparently loves word plays like those.
The person playing the game is canon to Undertale story, so Chara is not the one controlling Frisk, the one playing is canonically controlling them, many people can choose to ignore this as there are few dialogs that confirm this. Not necesarelly relate but Deltarune made sure to put abundance evidence to show whitout any doubt that the player is canonically controling the protagonist, probably against their will.

Skill is nice but unnecessary for playing undertale. Determination is far more important.

Chara wasn't hated, but the fandom basically treated Chara as the entity who performs the Genocide Route.

While this request isn't related to Undertale, it's worth watching I feel, cuz it's super interesting. I recommend reacting to "The Decade Long Quest For Shadow of the Colossus' Last Secret" by Jacob Gellar.
Also, "The Engoodening of No Man's Sky" by The Internet Historian.
    Both are great watches.
