Some very good choices there sir but some glaring omissions too. May I suggest Panther, Thrust, Arkanoid loader, Quedex, Sanxion, Delta, Rambo loader (listening to that a lot lately) and One Man and his Droid (how can you miss that?). Somebody else already said Commando, I'd add that too.
Nice countdown.. but mine would definitely include Cybernoid 1 & 2, Parallax, Knucklebusters, Auf Wiedersehen Monty, Gauntlet III, Nemesis the Warlock, Warhawk, Starforce Fighter, Delta and Sanxion. :)
The "Comic Bakery" music was also used in the Commodore 64 game "Top Gun" while you're sitting on the aircraft carrier prior to launching for a mission. It was later used on the the NES game "Jurassic Park" as the music for the opening stage, although it takes about 20 seconds before you will recognize it because the tempo is about 30% slower and it has a slightly unique intro before the music begins to loop. Of course, this is because Martin Galway worked on all three titles.
Good compilation, with some of my favourites. It's interesting that one of the most famous tunes, Commando (by Rob Hubbard) did not get place here. And what about Shoot Out? The country style musics of that are really joyful. It worths a search.
There are so many great C64 songs that I remember , Its so hard to choose which is the best because everyone will probably choose a different one :) You did a great job. I loved CRAZY COMETS! Rob Hubbard seemed to have a lot of tunes. One that I see didnt make the list but had super -awesome music was..."COMMANDO" and dont forget about BREAKSTREET an PAPERBOY, GYRUSS. Too many to list! Awesome job Spelarkivet !
The Dizzy games had outstanding music. And Fist 2. My god, Fist 2. Depending on what day you ask me, I could well tell you that Fist 2 had the best music on the C64. Certainly in my top 10, any day. Just incredible. The atmosphere is intense.
Nicely done Sir. My choice of games would be Krack out, Thing on a Spring, and Flimboy's Quest. The team that did the music for Flimboy's Quest should receive an award, but for now you honoring them here will do. Thanks for uploading this and once again, your video is very well done.
That was a lovely selection, that has quite a few overlaps with my personal favourites. It does miss a few highly influential and famous tunes, though. My personal favourites include almost everything Ben Daglish ever did. The sounds he used as "instruments" were often weirdly wonky or even dissonant, but the melodies and compositions were just so damn catchy and interesting!
Yes, software for C64 is one of the biggest in the world :). Also I'm writing two games for Commodore 64 which I want to published on my own cartridge so C64 is one of my fav too :). Best regards!
Some of those I've never heard of. Flimbo's Quest must've been after my time and is outstanding. But Maniacs of Noise have always been and still are outstanding. However, weird to have all the mega classics missing. You could easily fill the countdown with Rob Hubbard's stuff alone, hehe, and not to have Delta in there is somewhat of a crime, hehe. However, now I want to listen to the whole tunes, darned, hehehe...bet they're all on youtube, too, pffff. THANKS! Great fun for sure!
Looking at these comments, I can only assume no one here has heard the music to “Parallax” or “Green Beret”. My two favourites. Also Platoon, Aztec Challenge, and the almighty Forbidden Forest. Paul Norman brought a sense of atmosphere to his music that fee could match.
Can't agree with you more. There is something special about the SID... something magical, which even makes simple tunes like the one from Bagitman sound good. ^^
Wow, I didn't know the game at number 1. That's a good choice, amazing job with the sounds there. I didn't know that a C64 could do that (and I played A LOT!)
This is an excellent selection of games. Of course, Rob Hubbard made the music for many of the games listed, as confirmed by the in-game credits in some of the games.
It's no doubt impossible to compile the definitive list of top tunes for the C64, but this one looks strong. For me, all of the Dizzy games stand out as having outstanding music tracks and would dominate my top 20 list. Pitfall II and Exploding Fist have the most hypnotic music scores. Fruit Machine Simulator II title screen is really groovy. Operation Wolf title screen brings a tear to the eye. Milk Race is an overlooked gem. Hypa-Ball... check out PPOT's cover version. Wow.
Good music top 20 :). Also I love Hunter's Moon, Starace and genious Bionic Commando, Deliverance, Delta, Wizball, Slaine, Fernandez must die, Rambo: First Blood, Driller and brilliant Castle Master and awesome Terra Cresta and of course a lot of more :). BOFH is a great, that's right :). Thanks for add, waitin' for more :).
Yeah thanks... i retrospect i think i sound really weird. A version with full songs won't probably happen any time soon but thanks for watching though! ^^
Dude! You totally forgot Rob Hubbard's "Nemesis the Warlock"! It is the most epic C64 song ever! /watch?v=kdzfOXkZrY0 "The Great Giana Sisters" by Chris Hülsbeck is really awesome too. /watch?v=htzFLsSpdqY
Ok, old C64 tunes keep popping up in my head now, what about the score from "commando" and "platoon" both intromusic and especially end-credit tune, oh so sad :)
Weird, I've remixed song #11 years ago, except that it wasn't "Tarzan goes ape", the name of the SID was "Bignose's USA adventure" (never even saw it as a real C64 game, though). But all is right since both are actually crediting the same musician.
Well, it ain't ever stops begin fun to listen to them tunes, hehe, so I bet it'll be at least enjoyable for you...for some time, haha. There exists a threshold, too. Good luck, for sure. However, it's your top 20 list, so unless you want to do a vote based top 20 it's all up to you anyway. And I've enjoyed your selection and the reminder of some I almost forgot. GOOD LUCK with top 20/20, haha.
Theres literally thousands of GREAT tunes on the C64, its down to personal taste as to whats the 'best' I like spikey harold, last ninja simulator, racing destruction set, one man and his droid etc etc etc
SID chips are actually quite different from each other when it comes to the filter (especially with the 6581). That game's soundtrack uses the filter extensively for the music.
04:03 Oh my God ;-) This is the music of my childhood. I had played this games so many hours with my brother... But now i´m 31 ^^ and still love this Game
Totally agree with Last Ninja 2- and Remix. You needed Robocop, Turbo Outrun intro, JT's remix of Hubbards 'Crazy Comets'... Arkanoid II. Whittaker's Glider Rider.
Here are some less frequently listed ones: Jonathan Dunn: Robocop (song 2) Jonathan Dunn: Operation Wolf (song 5) Ben Daglish: Mountie Mick's Death Ride (song 1) Ben Daglish: Cobra (song 1) Ben Daglish: Mask III (song 1) Mark Cooksey: 1942 (song 1) Stefano Palmonari: Dylan Dog - Murderers (song 2) Michael Hendriks: Strike Force (Intromusic) Jeroen Tel: Hawkeye (song 1) Jeroen Tel: Lemmings (song 2-10) Jeroen Tel: Viz (song 1, 5) Jeroen Tel: Savage (song 3) Fred Gray: Shadowfire (song 2) Adam Gilmore: Cash and Grab (song 1)
Excelente!. Saludos!.
Gost'n goblin / Comic Bakeri / R.I.S.K. / Tarzan goes ape / Last Ninja 2 / Supremacy / B0FH / the last Ninja / Rubicon / FlimBo Quest are my Favorites songs:Making Music for videos games is a nice job!! Thankx for these m:u:s:i:c:s
You'd get better with practice, though. The most frustrating part was the jumps over water or marsh. But the fantastic graphics and music lured me back every time again.
Sorry for posting again, but that first link was played on an Emulator I think. Emulators never get that Track to sound like it was intended. Here's what Lightforce sounds like on an actual C64: /watch?v=S3TcLsYpfRs
Monty on the Run blows them all away, one of the best rocking tracks of all. Secondly listen to some o the ocean loaders, Slapfight, My Galways original ocean loader, and also Rambo and Green beret tracks. Commando another good one deserving to be in top 20! Reasonable top 20 but not the real c64 best in class. Others that are cool Wizball etc. However Monty on the Run is just a breaktaking track by Rob Hubbard who frankly besides Ben Daglish, Matt Grey and Martin Galway blew the rest away.
Chris Huelsbeck is absolutely missing: The Great Gianna Sisters, Turrican etc.
Yes, and his Demos "Chip Wars" and "It's drum time".
Jeroen Tel cybernoid 1 and 2
Christ! Got such a nostalgia kick right now by listening to these tunes. I MISS THE OLD DAYS! ^^
me too i still have my c64 and play it often
I miss the music but the most games aren't that fun
Some very good choices there sir but some glaring omissions too. May I suggest Panther, Thrust, Arkanoid loader, Quedex, Sanxion, Delta, Rambo loader (listening to that a lot lately) and One Man and his Droid (how can you miss that?). Somebody else already said Commando, I'd add that too.
Nice choice though i must raise...Sanxion by Rob Hubbard !!!
Thanks for quite an unusual selection.
Have been into C64 games since the 80s and I didn't even know a bunch of these here.
nice video, what about Commando though, that has to be one of the alltime classic music tracks on C64
Nice countdown.. but mine would definitely include Cybernoid 1 & 2, Parallax, Knucklebusters, Auf Wiedersehen Monty, Gauntlet III, Nemesis the Warlock, Warhawk, Starforce Fighter, Delta and Sanxion. :)

What about Zoids, Chip War, R-Type, Robocop, Cybernoid II and Myth??
Beautiful harmonies. Thank you.
Indeed, the C-64 is a treasure trove of music :)
There are so many great C64 songs that I remember , Its so hard to choose which is the best because everyone will probably choose a different one :)
You did a great job.
I loved CRAZY COMETS! Rob Hubbard seemed to have a lot of tunes.

Good video. I also liked the rambo and commando music on the c64

2:23 The music of "Comic bakery" is the same music used in the nes version of "Jurassic park"
Definitely not my list but big props for really professional commentary and presentation :)
Thanks a bunch! ^^
If you are curious, check out relatively recent SID tunes by C64 demosceners. You would be surprised what can be squeezed out of this chip ;) Greetz!
SUPREMACY ... WOW. Great tune.
Nice compilation, thanks :)
Great video, but I personally would have had Monty on The Run or The Last Ninja as Number 1, still great video :D
I loved the electric guitar in WIZBALL, one of my favorite games for c64
Really nice list, bring back some fond memories!
I would have found some place for Fairlight and Bomb Jack :)
Bubble Bobble rulez!!! :D And thank you for this wonderful video... :)
Thanks for including Bubble Bobble music ! :)
Yes, software for C64 is one of the biggest in the world :). Also I'm writing two games for Commodore 64 which I want to published on my own cartridge so C64 is one of my fav too :). Best regards!
Nice collection. My fave was and still is Last Ninja. Awesome music.
You are welcome sir. It's been my pleasure. Great vid-prod. mate. x˝)
Some slack has been cut! ;)
Loved the video.
I actually thought u were from an English-speaking country until the last song.
Just heard "Swedish Swedish Swedish" :P Awesome
Flimbo's Quest is my favorite too. I ended this game as one of the few, finding all hidden places.
Sounds good, and don't forget to include Cauldron II as a possibility as well? ;)
I'm missing Enigma Force, Commando, Delta Force and Wizball, among others. Ghost n' Goblins deserves top 10. :)
Very nice list...
IMHO the music from the videogame "Myth" by Jeroen Tel could have been also in this ranking
good selection. i can agree!
Action Biker? Park Patrol? Hunchback? Cmon you can't leave out these greats.
My all time favorite was the theme for Defender of the Crown.
Yeah, nice tune but a bit short
1 - great giana sisters
2 - ghost n goblins
3 - Commando
I have not played or even heard half of these, but I still get the nostalgy kick.
SID is awesome.
Wizzball had some kickass tunes!!!

ARKANORID is my favorite c64 music 🎶
Tarzan goes ape rocked. Best graphics and music of any c64 game. Addictive too!
lol I remember playing flimbos quest, it was one of the games that came backed in with the C64 when I got it 20 years(or more) ago
Great list!!
Personally my favourite for the C64 were always LED storm and Ghouls n ghosts. Tim Follin fan :)
There's so many good ones ^^

the list is great! But id love to have it, with your speaking on it, but with full songs. So i can listen to it at work while coding.
Yeah thanks... i retrospect i think i sound really weird. A version with full songs won't probably happen any time soon but thanks for watching though! ^^
You dont sound weird at all. I enjoyed the radio feel of the clip. Like if chiptunes where mainstream. :D
Dude! You totally forgot Rob Hubbard's "Nemesis the Warlock"! It is the most epic C64 song ever!
/watch?v=kdzfOXkZrY0
"The Great Giana Sisters" by Chris Hülsbeck is really awesome too.
/watch?v=htzFLsSpdqY
great list, but where's monty on the run?
Where is commando
first wobble bass i have ever heard was in krakout. damn that game rocked...

Hmm... Missing M.U.L.E, Action Biker, and Out Run's Splash-Wave.
Action Biker is one of those top tunes one could just listen to on repeat while working.
@@jontiummorkimus7111 Heh. M.U.L.E is better on the Atari platform, though, as it has 4-channel sound with an extra part to it.
#12 Chimera - Rob Hubbard - THE BEST IN MY OPINION:)
Theres literally thousands of GREAT tunes on the C64, its down to personal taste as to whats the 'best'
I like spikey harold, last ninja simulator, racing destruction set, one man and his droid etc etc etc
How come Rob Hubbard's Commando isn't here and in top five? Unbelievable.

Bubble Bobble is my favourite from that set
Totally agree with Last Ninja 2- and Remix. You needed Robocop, Turbo Outrun intro, JT's remix of Hubbards 'Crazy Comets'... Arkanoid II. Whittaker's Glider Rider.
I didn't see Tetris on this list?
Thanks ^^
Here are some less frequently listed ones:
Jonathan Dunn: Robocop (song 2)
Jonathan Dunn: Operation Wolf (song 5)
Ben Daglish: Mountie Mick's Death Ride (song 1)
Ben Daglish: Cobra (song 1)

Mark Cooksey: 1942 (song 1)
Stefano Palmonari: Dylan Dog - Murderers (song 2)
Michael Hendriks: Strike Force (Intromusic)
Jeroen Tel: Hawkeye (song 1)

Jeroen Tel: Viz (song 1, 5)
Jeroen Tel: Savage (song 3)
Fred Gray: Shadowfire (song 2)
Adam Gilmore: Cash and Grab (song 1)
Mark Cooksey is so under appreciated thanks for mentioning him on your list.

The list is incorrect. No "Tetris", no "Turrican 2", no "Grand Prix Circuit", no "Great Giana Sisters", no "Katakis", no "To be on top".
Deflektor , Katakis, Startrash top music on c64
Gost'n goblin / Comic Bakeri / R.I.S.K. / Tarzan goes ape / Last Ninja 2 / Supremacy / B0FH / the last Ninja / Rubicon / FlimBo Quest are my Favorites songs:Making Music for videos games is a nice job!! Thankx for these m:u:s:i:c:s
Where is Cybernoid 2 !?!?!?!?!?
Cobra,Ace 2,Commando,Thalamus....And many more
You'd get better with practice, though. The most frustrating part was the jumps over water or marsh. But the fantastic graphics and music lured me back every time again.
I hear ya man... but it's impossible to get all the good ones in one list. Maybe a top 50 would cover it? ^^
Hubbard rules !
HaiZeus Christ Jesus Christ and
Hhahahahaa i almost got tears in my eyes when hearing Bubble and Krakout :))
Isn't Krakout a sped-up version of "Can't Get Used To Losing You"?
Trazan got a mouse pointer stuck over the C64 emulator :D
"Thing on a String" must be the predecessor to "Thing Bounces Back". Never seen it before.
OMFG the memories!!!
Jeroen Tel FTW
Armageddon man had a haunting tune. I loved playing it late at night.
Sorry for posting again, but that first link was played on an Emulator I think. Emulators never get that Track to sound like it was intended. Here's what Lightforce sounds like on an actual C64: /watch?v=S3TcLsYpfRs
Especially level 4 - in the dungeons. Spooky!
Rob Hubbard's Monty on the Run.
Hard to better that one as a SID tune. Fact is it stands very well on its own in its original form.
cool list.
My personal favorite is DRACONUS
Monty on the Run blows them all away, one of the best rocking tracks of all. Secondly listen to some o the ocean loaders, Slapfight, My Galways original ocean loader, and also Rambo and Green beret tracks. Commando another good one deserving to be in top 20! Totally agree with Monty on the run. The in game music is a masterpiece.
I even learned to play the high score theme.
Love it! Älskar't! Krakout var alltid en favorit. ^ω^
Hyvä lista
Decton, V-GA, Kick Start..... Hammerfist.... Katakis.....
But it's Your Top 20. Of Course ;)
Missed a trick with Invade-a-load, possibly the best loader and loader music ever!
The Temple of Apshai Trilogy title screen music was my favorite tune.
