One of THE greatest teaching DIY's is this one. WOW! I believe EVERY person trying to learn to play the PSG, DO this often. It is awesome. You can't imagine what this will do in your learning "curve".
Thank you kind Sir Jim for making this video.

I just found this video and I appreciate all the help I can get. I am a 72 year old retired dirt contractor and I have acquired a sho-bud double neck in pristine condition. I think that pedal steel is the most beautiful insterment on earth. thanks for the video

Jim Bob, I doubt you remember me, but in 1985, we produced a show featuring you, your brothers, and Shorty Spang in Independence, Mo. at the old RLDS Auditorium for the Firefighters Benefit Fund. The next evening, you boys played for the KC Parks & Recreation at Swope Park. My wife and I hung out with you backstage there. You guys did one hell of a show both nights, and the audiences loved you. Glad to see you're still playing that steel guitar! I am very sorry to hear about John. I hope you are doing well. Give our regards to Darrell and Shorty! I have a bunch of photos of you guys back then, if you'd like copies.-Terry Janes

HI Jim I just found you on here on you tube. I have been playing pedal steel since 1958. My first steel was Fender 1000. After I got out of the service I bought a new ZB in 1974. I'm still playing it. I am now 81 years old and still playing at clubs in the area. Love it !!! I live in the Spokane now after selling our home in Kettle Falls Wa. I am a retired mail carrier. I have been to Billings before. Anyway just thought I'd send you a message. Thanks for your video !

That was amazing and brought back great memories of when I started on the pedal steel at age 10. This was my first song my teacher taught me in Dallas. Haven't played for years as I gravitated to the five string banjo. In the process of going back to my roots and purchasing a pedal steel at age 67. Think I'll relearn In The Mood. Makes me think of my Dad as he would tap his foot as I played. In The Mood was his favorite song during his time in China during WWII. Thanks.

I’m waiting for my pedal steel guitar from GFI to come. I find your style of teaching very spontaneous and you make it look everyone can do it. Thanks. I’ll be looking up more your tutorials. I’m an absolute beginner in PSG. I do have years of experience with the guitar. I hope it will help me transition to PSG. I have just retired so I have ample time trying a new skill set. Thank you very much!!👍👍👍

Great lesson! Lots of nice tips. As a side note, that chromatic walk up using the 5th and 10th strings will be a challenge for beginners because of the tendency to just slide your way up, rather than stopping at every fret. Practice, practice, practice. Ben Price - San Antonio

We have a great wee pedal steel club in gartcosh/Scotland ..🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 and like yourself some of these lads have been playing 30/40 + years and like yourself very fluent in your playing and technique ye I play the Bud emmon s set up have 2 pedal steel guitars both MCI s one single and the other double neck . but both have different pick up sounds as someone changed the original single neck from its original to a George Les pick up ...? But yes it's all to do with practice and the bar and the volume pedal and learning different ways to obtain the notes and riffs thanks for posting band helping all the newbeez I guess at some point I may post a couple of my hard learnt tunes ...cheers 👍👏👏👏🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🥃..

Hi Jim, thank you so much for this lesson for us 'newbie' steel players. I am 78 and live in England. I have played 6 string standard guitar for over 60 years and last year I got my first PSG which I love. I am left handed so I had to have one made in left hand, which doubles my learning curve because, like when I learnt 6 string guitar, I have to learn/rethink everything backwards, like 'mirror' fashion, but I am enjoying the challenge! Again thank you for your time and excellent video to help us newbies.
PS my name is Barry Palmer, but my post will show as in my wife's name.

Hello Barry, your message reminded me of my guitar instructor some 65 years ago. I did his head in on arriving for lessons with a 6 string left handed guitar. He never could handle it - giving instruction that is!! Yet, i built my own pedal steel, and have never once looked at right handed instruction and got confused. Just a natural translation without even thinking about it. Hope you have got the hang of it now.🙂

@@Melvvynfirmager Hello Melvvyn, Thank you for you kind message. Yes I have got a bit of the hang of it now, just busking along to some 'old school' Country records.......Billie jo Spears, Tammy wynnette, Merle Haggard etc. I'm really enjoying it! It's easier strength wise because I don't have to hold down chords like with the 6 string guitar, I have Neuropathy (week hands and feet) but it's more of a mental challenge! When they say 'Left knee right' I have to do 'Right knee left' . But that's the fun isn't it!

Hi, Marc. Thank you for the view and the nice comments. It's nice to hear from someone so far away. I have actually been to Germany around 1978 with Susan Raye. We did 17 different shows (all military) in 3 weeks! I was twenty! I remember when over there I had lost my bar and had to improvise with a half-filled salt shaker with duct tape over the holes! You might be surprised how many steel guitar players there really are in Germany. There may be a lot more of us than you realize. I am going to start a private Facebook group pretty soon and maybe some of them will come out of the woodwork. Steel guitar is experiencing a resurgence right now. On behalf of myself and King West Media Group, I really appreciate your comments. We have two more lessons currently in the edit bay.

Hi, Si. I like the Ernie Ball pedals. EB is my favorite pedal; very durable, easy access. Yes, the string does break sometimes but they do make a kit for like $10 that comes with a string and a spring and some instructions. I need to replace mine every couple of years.

Jim - many thanks! You play beautifully. I'm very taken with your right-hand and wondered how you're fingering the 'In The Mood' head. It LOOKS like you're picking strings 6,5,4 with thumb/1st/2nd but can you confirm that? It's either that or you're crossing-over - I can't quite figure out what you're doing. Great videos! I play 'Day', too, incidentally. Your blocking is terrific!

I do so love your youtube videos Jim ... I am looking for a music man in the Calgary, Alberta area to assist me with my pedal steel guitar ... hoping you could help me or maybe someone here will see my request? My husband gave me a dual-board pedal steel with an amp for christmas, and I would love to learn and play and make a lot of noise, but I need someone who knows this instrument to tune the strings, pedals and knee levers then set up the amp for optimal sound ... while I watch, talk and learn how to do this myself. I've talked to all of the music instrument/lessons stores in this city and cannot find a single soul as of yet. I am willing to pay that person a "reasonable amount" for their troubles. Would you, or someone here, know or be willing to assist me?

Hello Laila, just read your message, sorry I can't help, living in the UK. But, just wanted to say how disaapointing no one responded. I hope you are now a hot player, having got it figured. I learnt 48 years ago with no help what so ever, even built my own left handed pedal steel, as no money. Just started again after 45 year absence, and relearning my chops. Good luck to you. Melvyn
