Sorry for the multiple repeat uploads of this lesson! There were a couple errors I had to fix. See what you can put together using this simple C# minor - A - E (vi-IV-I) chord progression. It's great to learn to play it like John, but it's even better to then try to expand on it, or reinterpret it, and make something a little different that's unique to you! Please also let me know what future lessons you'd like to see. Here's the chapters.... Chapters: Chapters: John's Lesson on the Theory behind "Slow Dancing" with fretLIVE: 0:00 Gary's Lesson Intro: 0:56 Lesson on the Chord Progression and Key of E: 2:23 Lesson on "thirds" Double Stops: 3:43 Lesson on "Pentatonic Stacks" Double Stops: 5:05 The A Chord: 5:44 The E Chord: 6:45 Similarities with Little Wing by Jimi Hendrix: 7:58 Intervals & Combing Pentatonic with Chord Shapes: 9:12
Question @powmusic: why do you have the first shape (for C#m) labeled as the "G" caged shape when all three of the C# (tonic) notes form the "E" shape?
I'm so glad that it is 😀 I've learned so much in over this weekend thanks to the whole fret LIVE thing; it's crazy how much easier it is to understand and digest what another guitarist is doing when you see it from this perspective. I feel like I could learn how to play anything like this, and I'm kind of mad I didn't have this 20 years ago lmao
I must say I absolutely love your animations after learning CAGED this just makes so much sense to visualize what players are thinking when they are playing! That’s the missing link I’ve always struggled with and it’s just amazing and thank you so much for the work you put into this! 🤩
As a lefty, it can be very challenging following along because I'm always trying to create something different (in real time) in my mind than what is being presented. I find your teaching more helpful than most and just wanted to say thanks for sharing. Subscribed from a slow learner, lefty
Mr. John Mayer… awesome teacher…and thanks to u for sharing insight into those devices and techniques! I needed this… helps a lot on fretboard ‘discovery’…!
Another Great lesson! I really appreciate the 'fret live' animation in these lessons as well as your relating the notes back to the chord shape and/or Pentatonic positions where they are found 👍🏾👍🏼🎯❗Thank you❗
Your course is really wonderful, which is very helpful for us who live in small cities who can't get high-quality music education resources to learn music and guitar playing. Thank you for your work.😄
oh my god this is the greatest thing, the animation has literally explained it better than anything ive learnt in the past 5 years. I wish you nothing but success as so many people will find this and it will just click and unlock so much stuff
bro i LOVE THESE VIDEOS ITS LIKE BRO I NEED TO PLAY AFTER THIS its like "go on man here's EVERYTHING YOU NEED, NOT JUST THE TABS HERE'S THE THEORY BEHIND THIS BADASS MUSIC THAT YOU LOVE" "are you gonna pick your guitar and play or you gonna make excuses?"
For anybody that struggles with the thumb over concept for the A and E chords. Try this; for the A chord Hammer-on frets 9 & 11 of the D string while also hitting the open A string on top of it. And for the E chord take that same thing and move it up one string(same frets hammer 9 to 11) and hit the open E string on top. Sounds nearly identical.
I wanna ask why some of the notes marked on the strings have a flat b symbol, which is very strange...And shouldn't the numbered notation of the pentatonic scale be 1 2 3 5 6?reply plz
Thx for this amazing UA-cam channel Gary! Regarding the fret live program. I read it's scheduled on Saturdays and Wednesdays. At what time does it start exactly? I'm asking this question because I'm coming from Europe. :) Thx in advance for your reply. Have a lovely day. Regards, Benjamin
Hi Benjamin! The usual times are 7:30pm central time on Thursdays and 10:30am central time on Saturday mornings. Most of my european students choose to come on Saturday mornings, which I believe is your early evenings. You should only plan to attend one session. I do two to accommodate students from different time zones....in the case you can't make them, I share the replays! All the best, and hope to see you in a few weeks! -Gary
Hendrix didn't know the names of the things but he for sure did not invent all of these things. He was standing on the shoulders of all the great blues guitar players that came before him. He learned lots and lots and lots of music so that he had the vocabulary in his ears and fingers and simply applied that vocabulary in a way no one had heard before. Jimi was one of a kind it's sad we didn't get to see him continue to grow.
Must say it really sucks that its just been decided when it come to guitar either learn right handed or F you. Everyone understands when you write left handed thats because thats what felt right to you. But the amount of people that tell me I shouldve learned to play right handed is unbelievable. And I actually tried for a damn long time. I basically made no progress. So I went lefty and it made all the difference. Its great, Other than the fact that everything like this fret live is unusable to me basically. Nobody ever offers left handed anything. I have to draw and write everything out myself when possible. Be nice if yall could include a left handed image. Even if it was tiny Id be so happy. I cant be the only one that feels like im just outside the class trying to see in the window.
I have a left-handed student that says this layout works great for him… You could also download the video and flip it in some editing software. Thanks for the feedback and best of luck. I do everything else lefty, just not guitar so I feel for you
@@PowMusic I don't understand how this works for him. He's not looking at an image of his fretboard if he plays lefty. I can kinda get the jist but I have to look and imagine everything inverted on top of everything else that goes with learning. And that only works if I slow it way down. Up to speed I just can't keep up. Just sucks cause I can tell what an awesome tool fret live is. I just don't get to use it
