There's a funny story this song always reminds me of. A while ago, I was really into this girl. We went on a date, I'd cook for her and then we'd watch a movie, all at my place. I thought: every girl loves John Mayer, so if I'd play a John Mayer song for her, she'd probably be impressed. I started to study this song, I didn't know it was so hard to play. After six hours of non-stop studying, I finally got it right. I was pretty nervous when I played it, but it went perfect. At the end, she said: I appreciate it, but I really don't like John Mayer. 😅

It's easier than you think! With western scales you're more likely to hit a "right" note than a "wrong" one, so don't worry too much about which frets to add over a bar chord: just finger the bar chord then try hammeron/pulloff of any fret you can reach! Getting the pinky finger strong enough to flick strings while fingering the chords is the hardest part, and for that it doesn't matter how it sounds. Just start building up that pinky strength and you're well on your way to "embellishments over bar chords" town.

You rock brotha. I love this song, been writing songs my whole life and even had the chance to play in front of thousands of people a few times. I could never quite figure out the live version he plays, your breakdown is on point and filled in the 30% gap that I just couldnt figure out. Thank you. Liked and Subscribed :)
First of all: Thank you for the great tutorial Marty. Here is an easier version on how to play the song, with less usage of the left thumb. It does not change any notes you play, but for me it is a lot easier to play it like this. So here are a few tips: In the beginning you can slide right into the C#m with in an regular bar chord shape. When you play the little walk down: just play it on the d and g side. So after the slide you play: 11th fr. d and 9th fr. g, then 9th fr. d and 8th fr. g, then both 6th fr., lastly both on the 4th fret. This is way easier and you end right in the position where you want to end for the next part. In this part you can play the open a string instead of using your thumb on the 5th fret of the e string. This way to avoid playing with your thumb can also be used later in the second part of the main riff. Lastly just a little idea: At the end of the riff you could finish with an a-shaped e chord with base note on the 7th fret of the a string. This makes transitioning to the beginning of the riff easier and if you want you could spice it up with the high tone on the e string. Nevertheless being able to play chords and riffs with your thumb on your top strings is useful, so you should consider practicing it.
I really like this style of explanation with guidance now that I’m finally competent enough to follow what’s happening. It makes learning the grove so much easier than reading tabs. Thank you 🙏🏼
@ 11:33 I would recommend for my large handed friends like myself that you use your index and ring for the 12 14, then transition to middle and ring for the slide. I struggled unnecessarily for too long using the John Mayer way that you are teaching. But do what is most comfortable.
The soul I feel when I get into this song, diving into the what I would describe is the free will with the pentatonic.. could smell the ashes, roof falling in and I’m just in a stool in the cent of the room holding a strat.
What an awesome tune. And a super helpful lesson - as always. Thank you so much, Marty! For you fellow beginner-to-intermediates out there who, like me, struggle to switch between pick and fingers: try hybrid picking that intro part. So, pick on the low E and finger(s) on the higher strings. Still sounds sweet, but is a lot easier to manage imo. Peace n love to all of you.
I mean I’d like to know how this whole intro was created. Dude is truly a creative genius. I could never sit around and just come up with this out of thin air. Haha
Saw him talking on another video and he said he noodles away at ideas while watching TV. Basically, he's always got a guitar in his hands. I can see how that would work when your mind is cleared of actively thinking about what your playing and your fingers connect to the song-writing part of your brain unconsciously. Also being John Mayer is a big bonus lol
Hi Marty from Perth Western Australia. I really like your lessons I I'm trying to get slow dancing John Mayer Thanks for the great tutorial. Keep up the good work All the best Clare
Thanks Marty! I've been playing parts of this song for awhile but needed to piece it all together and this got me there! In the "going down" part I like to just play the B major and hammer on and off the sus4 for the whole B chord, it makes it sound good enough if you're the only one playing guitar. That's one of those parts that has to be in the song if you're going to play it.
This is really about learning Pentatonic in all positions, or the standard vertical vs horizontal. You don't need to master the fretboard, but just learning Pentatonic both vertically in the various positions and horizontally is absolutely huge.
Marty, been looking to find a solid tutorial/tab for this song all over. Nailed it buddy. Really captured the essence of the bluesy vibe leaving some room for interpretation. Two thumbs up!
Love the Hendrix-style vibe on this. :) I have problems doing the thumb over the E string and the F style chord. My fingers tend to get in the way and mute the higher strings.
Man, i love the way you present. You actually have a chance to bring together what you see and what you hear. Repeating the snippets, the whole piece to the actual part. Awesome job man, thank you.
4:02 For tiny handed people playing the A chord, just play the open A string instead of thumbing the E string on the 5th fret. Your hand will thank you.
The first time I heard this song, it was Tommy Emmanuel and Mike Dawes. It's a beautiful version if you haven't heard it. I love this song and came here to try to learn it. Thanks Marty for the awesome explanation. You always do a great job with your "break it down" lessons!!! "Here we go!"
Marty, this lesson was a breakthrough for me. I picked up some great techniques from this. Been playing along time but never had time to dig into it as I am now. Cheers and thanks
I've watched quite a few really good "How To's" covering this piece of work. Congratulations. There was far more to this tutorial. I got much more from it than I was at first expecting. Kudos.
Slow it WAY down and keep practicing. Once you can do it smoothly at a much slower tempo, increase the tempo a little bit, then a little bit more until you get it. 👍🏻
That's why for this song i just purposely drop my after the first muted string part and after that just finger pick. I couldn't get the pick back in my hand in time.
If people are struggling to get that beginning part where marty goes from pick to finger picking- i know it’s hard for me to tuck the pick away and get it back without fumbling it- you can keep the pick and instead of finger picking- pick the fatter string with the pick while at the same time using your middle finger to pluck the next string. Sort of an intro to hybrid picking. It’s actually really easy to practice picking one string with you pick while plucking the next string under it with your middle finger. What helps me is to set your middle fingertip against the string for a second before you pluck it. Now when you are trying to play triads you can add your ring finger to the next string as well, and pluck all 3 strings of a triad at the same time. It sounds a lot better than strumming down 3 strings for a triad, because triads work best when the 3 notes are played at the same time. Btw thanks Marty, and I know you know this stuff- just putting it out there for those who don’t
THANK YOU I've been wanting to learn this for forever and I got most of it down in one day thanks to you! I am not there yet with tempo and smooth transition but I'll keep practicing :)

Here is an easier version on how to play the song, with less usage of the left thumb. It does not change any notes you play, but for me it is a lot easier to play it like this. So here are a few tips:
In the beginning you can slide right into the C#m with in an regular bar chord shape.
When you play the little walk down: just play it on the d and g side. So after the slide you play:
11th fr. d and 9th fr. g,
then 9th fr. d and 8th fr. g,
then both 6th fr.,
lastly both on the 4th fret.

Brilliant video, it really helps.
As a regular-sized hand person, I was wondering why not just do that anyway 😂
I am 6'6
@@JamesCTD it's to do with the tone
The first time I heard this song, it was Tommy Emmanuel and Mike Dawes. It's a beautiful version if you haven't heard it. I love this song and came here to try to learn it. Thanks Marty for the awesome explanation. You always do a great job with your "break it down" lessons!!! "Here we go!"
I’ve never been so happy in life
Marty, this lesson was a breakthrough for me. I picked up some great techniques from this. Been playing along time but never had time to dig into it as I am now. Cheers and thanks
Seriously wondering who would dislike this video 😂, anyways would love to see a Neon by John Mayer tutorial!
Someone who couldn't learn the song, lol. That, or John Mayer's exes.
Yeah, the solo live version from Where the Light Is, is amazing
Are you joking ? There’s no point in him breaking down neon when 99% of players won’t be able to get anywhere near neon in a million years.

Looks quite difficult to me...
Never heard neon played same way twice.
I've watched quite a few really good "How To's" covering this piece of work. Congratulations. There was far more to this tutorial. I got much more from it than I was at first expecting. Kudos.
Definitely learning this now
My fav teacher, thank u hommie for all your lessons , love you !! Good vibes for you
Can you do a tutorial of Gravity by John Mayer?
Great Lesson! I like how how you broke up the measures into even tinier pieces to work on on the fretting and and hammer ons. Thanks for sharing!
10:11 is where the tutorial ended for me Marty scared me away with all that
It took me 3 days to get that part right , 🤣😂😂😂
just hammer one buddy you got it
Slow it WAY down and keep practicing. Once you can do it smoothly at a much slower tempo, increase the tempo a little bit, then a little bit more until you get it. 👍🏻
What a beautiful guitar

man you are just the best. followed you for year and years. thanks
All I need is to go from pick to finger picking with out dropping the FING pick 😂
And then getting it back out of your hand for picking again!
I felt that 🤣🤣
Just hybrid pick
That's why for this song i just purposely drop my after the first muted string part and after that just finger pick. I couldn't get the pick back in my hand in time.
FACTS :-(
You are such a freaking beast bringing us all this free content!!! In any point in time
Great lesson can you do black or Jeremy by Pearl Jam please
You should do “Another kind of green” by John Mayer. It’s an extremely underrated song, but a very good one. Give it a listen if you haven’t
Great pick! I want to learn this tune, as well.
Yeah it’s super underrated with a vibrant Hendrix type playing style
Arya Yektafar I know and there aren’t too many good tutorials on it
People throw GOAT around to loosely. But I will say John Mayer is the actual GOAT. Period.
Awesome Marty ! Could you please do 'Who says' or 'Stop this train' by John Mayer next ? I think it would be also cool :)
Yes who says
@@thecolinthemac Paul Davids tuturial helped me out a lot with Mayers "finger-slapping technique"
Jakob Nordström yes I have watched that too and it was great, but I would love to see also Marty’s lesson on this
Thanks for sharing this Marty! I've been learning it for an hour now and it's starting to feel great! Such a lovely song!
Actually i m listing to this song cause of one of my crush ...it seems this is her fav song...😂
Marty, I've seen your videos for few years and I can say you've got way better. Good job man !!
Pulling teeth by Green Day plz
THANK YOU I've been wanting to learn this for forever and I got most of it down in one day thanks to you! I am not there yet with tempo and smooth transition but I'll keep practicing :)
