Fixing Up & Driving an Icon on The Autobahn - The BMW E39 M5

  • In this episode, we are working on my favorite car, the E39 M5. We start off with an oil change, but find a leak from the oil pan and along the way a few more things. We are replacing the oil pan gasket, water pump, thermostat, valve covers, fuel pump, trunk badge and installing monoballs in the thrust control arms. Followed up by driving on the Autobahn and hitting some lovely German countryside roads.

Eggzackerly right Jan - greetings from 🇿🇦 - this dude kept me sane during Covid and basically taught me an online course for old school - pre computer E60 series BMW maintenance - for free 😜😈
And - most importantly he taught us that anyone can learn this stuff, to understand our cars better and drive with confidence 👏👏 - give that man a Bells or a cold 🍺
Am currently looking for a cheaper version of this car with the 3.0 straight six = an E39 530 or May be even a solid 540i if I can find a decent one
And I don’t care about the fuel consumption - I just love to drive - listening to Ahmed kilic party music or trance music (at 63 years old !! )
One Life = Live it !!
And while the greenies go EV - do they can by tracked and monitored etc - we’ll stay old school and drive like every caveman was designed to = we still got 100% male DNA
Now where am I going to install that hoist ?? 🤔

I had an e39 M5. It was a phenomenal car, LeMans Blue over Caramel extended leather. Mighty expensive to use a daily driver and keep to a relatively perfect level on maintenance. I eventually decided to replace mine with an e36 M3, with a Mini in between. The e36 is the far more affordable and reliable car. It's also a lot more raw and fun to daily, but not nearly as comfortable or fast in a straight line.

I put turner monoball front control arm bushings on my E46 and I had a very similar experience in regards to the steering. They really transformed the car and it even made the braking feel rock solid. The only downside is that I went through two different sets in less than 30k KM. They would clunk and rattle and simply were not worth the trouble. They also have to be greased periodically. I also recently put redline D4 ATF in my manual transmission and it’s the best fluid I have ever put into this car so atf seems to work in many different applications. Great video!

Great maintenance Sreten. I replaced the first water pump on my former e36 325(M50) by a BMW one. It lasted only 40k km. After that, I bought an INA pump, which lasted for about 50k km. I drove that car for 17 fantastic years. Dutch regards, Nico.

I love these videos so much. It's like the perfect opportunity to sit down with a good drink and enjoy the fruits of your labour.
I live in Iceland by the way. As expected, importing parts here is very expensive, so owning (and properly maintaining) a BMW is similar to having like two kids as a single parent.
    Or so I'm told.

Most of the valve cover gaskets I see leak on these is from the flattening of the rubber donuts on the cover bolts. The bolt bottoms out far before the rubber can apply adequate pressure. Cheers, the channel is fantastic.

Question: Will TuV inspection be a problem with the Monoballs? I understand DE regulations can be a bit tricky when it comes to using aftermarket mechanical parts which would need to be certified by the manufacturer.

Never had problems with aftermarket bushings like PU for example. I also have different coupling rods in my e30 which are actually for a mk3 mondeo and replace the rubber bushings with uniballs.

Love the content 👍great article on the serving of the E39 M5 you got a gem there!!!!
Was mulling this over last night and sadly BMW has (LOST THE PLOT) completely over recent years.
It begs the question, perhaps we were warned if this with the BMW Mini. Initially they outsourced respected and excellent designer Frank Stephenson to do the MK1 X5 and he did a excellent job,so on the back of that he got the contract to do the new Mini, which I think is sublime. The only thing I’d change would be to address the clumsy indicator/sidelight assembly. I’d replace it his with a lightly domed inductor with a crone ring around aping the original, and move the side light into headlight aka original. Now BMW had the template laid down by Frank Stephenson, but thought,we could save money by doing mk 2/3 in-house,resulting in models that have been to Celebrity Fat Farm!!!
Now to me the modern era where BMW were at its best were 1994-2004 some beautiful cars elegant, stylish ,classy.
My choice would be 635csl ( Crime Seen Investigation) lol MK 1. E28 Hans built 282bhp M5 and the legendary Mk 1 E30 M3 the 2.3 4 cylinder 212 bhp. All timeless classics. More recent would be the later V10 M5, challenging looks, but I quite like them, and the ultimate gem the E46 M3 CSL,which I believe is the best M car made. I also believe ,not sure if it’s Munich Legends or not that will remove all the gubbins from the SMG gearbox convert it to a manual 6 speeder, alter the drive ratio on the differential, and provide a machine that truly lives up to the Ultimate Driving Machine moniker. Check out Harry’s Garage review on this!!!
Also a smal company called REDUX has done a sympathetic evolution of the original E30 2.3 4 cylinder, and it’s sublime, but at 338.000 plus doner car,not cheap. Check out Retropower on UA-cam for a excellent review on the development of this. only 30 are being made,so a genuine future classic.
To current day BMW (Just Why) !!!!!
The insides are all fussy and capastive touch screens, over complicated, and then (tacky, naff) jewelled controls (why just why)!!!
Then the exterior (were they all on drugs) the M3/4 have this huge Beever toothed grill (why ,just why) the side and back full of sweeps and creases. A disaster!!!
Then we get to view the IX. Hideous, just Hideous!!!
Then the Gross, ugly, incoherent disaster XIIIM. This apparently was designed by 3 separate design houses, with no communication between them, then glued the 3 bits together (they all definitely were on drugs) hideous, offensive, corrupted, bloated!!! With 23 inch rims, imagine the cost to replace the boots on that, let alone a alloy!!
So we think we’ve come to the end of shocks from BMW, but then we are presented with the X7M and i7 now we’re at the pinnacle of bad taste. ( why just why)
Now if I had a large wad burning a hole in my pocket, and was in the market for a new car, Id go no where near BMW and go straight to Tesla and order a model 3 or a Alfa Romeo dealer and order a Guilla quadlufiglo, both classy desirable fast accomplished cars.
So,yes ,in my view BMW had sadly (totally Lost the Plot) and can’t imagine why anyone or anybody would take them seriously anymore, unless you are a Celebrity, who has NO TASTE,LITTLE BRAINS,if any,and to much CASH, sadly these are the people who will by this!!!!
So I’m with you totally, get a tastefully made BMW from 1984-2004 give it love, care and attention. Subtlety enhance and restore to its best and love, and enjoy the time with a classic.
Keep on doing the great work, and providing excellent informative content.👍👍👍👍

Averaged 11 L/100 km during the trip, including highway, city driving, traffic jams, mountain roads... pretty impressive for a big 4.9L V8. On the Autobahn, I usually get 17-18 L/100 km when driving at high speeds.
