I do not understand English .... It was difficult to translate the video .... I am grateful for this summary I will be able to translate it ...... Thanks from the depth of my heart ... My name is Mona and I am from an Arab country
I dont understand how someone can draw this much detail from their head. That is insane to me.
Practice practice practice and when you are finished practice some more
Nathan The Ape man he practiced with references when he was younger.
The accuracy of the perspective here is insane..
Once you know the rules it's just about following them. That's about it. It is a good drawing though I agree.
Your attention to detail is impeccable.
Yep. Here lies a person whose attention to detail rivals makoto shinkai.
Oh I likey alright. Very much likey - try this for detail - Rebirth: Artist Manabu Ikeda
An idea: maybe showcase some of your old drawings to show how you've developed as an artist? Idk if you've done this before but I'm intrigued to see how far you've come as an artist c:
My old drawings make me laugh because I was trash and now I'm..... StiLL TrAsH

The art here is making me feel way inferior yet filling me with the urge to draw.

Something else I’d recommend to beginner artists: DRAW FROM LIFE. References are nice when you want to draw something specific, but to truly challenge yourself and improve your drawing skills, drawing from life is the way to go for beginners. Photos have a flattening effect that is actually detrimental to developing your skills as it’s already translated 3-D into 2-D when that should be your job as the artist. Draw from observation consistently and you’ll see your art improve tremendously.
I like it, but I only draw from references, I can't draw from like memory cuz I don't know where to start. I'm in 9th grade, and I have art this year, I have always liked to draw, I'm ok but I only draw like cartoonish things, like I don't draw realistic things like people, I attempted it once and it turned out ok but I need more practice and skill to learn about the shading, but even that I got from a reference
@@nicolemclean6711 I think she didn't mean to draw from memory, but instead draw from the real real life. Like go out, look at a tree and draw that. Or go out, to the mall, and draw one of the storefronts you can see. Or I guess in art class look out of the window and draw what's there.
@@5argan yeah I suppose, but I can't draw like that, I have to look at some reference for like an outline. Idk, just hard to draw from things that are realistic
@@nicolemclean6711 That's why you practice it. You are trying to learn to see outlines and values in real life objects by practicing a lot to help you better understand how they work. That will eventually help you a lot with any type of drawing.
Wanting to learn to draw feels like looking at a piano and not knowing how to press a key.
Try draw a box - uncomfortable youtube channel. To anyone feeling their learning process is not structured and measurable enough.
I wish Software Development came to me as drawing did. I think either can be learned with time invested but I think for some it comes easier or they are more adept.
I really appreciated this, I learnt art at school back in the 70's. I recently have completed a few pieces in acrylic and oil. I was looking for help around realistic drawing and found you. What I'm grateful for is your insight and calm delivery and most of all that you don't swear in between. I am not a prude but I work with children and young people as reference without having to cut out any bad language. Your so refreshing and I really like what you do. Keep it up and keep being Great
Its based on perspective. Dont see it as tedious time consuming work. See it as a passion, the love of your life and what gives you hope and reason for living. Thats when it becomes something so much more than just many hours of work. For example watching movies you enjoy for many hours wouldnt seem like work because you enjoy it. Thats not say making art isnt hard work (its very hard,im an artist myself). But, just change your perspective and look at it differently. Ive changed how i view it and its changed my life.
The outcomes of the battles in life are determined by the war in our mind. - J.Sheetz
I mean it's hard to convince myself of that since it's really tiring and I usually see no results every practice session, if it wasn't that way I'd see it as fun, it's so frustrating sometimes.
@@dragonicbladex7574 If you want to give up go ahead, no ones forcing you too. Maybe it just isn't your passion
@@dragonicbladex7574 then you need a goal for every practise session. Like getting perspective right every time, or shading, but focus on achieving and correcting different things. Eventually you'll get it right.
I think there is a right time to explore fundamentals and that time might be different for everyone. Whenever I see these Wish I Could Tell Myself videos, I get the feeling the speaker doesn't fully appreciate the necessity of the order of the steps they took and their journey. You find out about these things generally when you're ready. You get motivated when the circumstances are right. You can't really force yourself.
That detail tho
I love the detail of your work and the passion you have, but your commitment is the most important! Great job. Thanks for all the advice.
Just recently discovered your channel and am loving it. I have watched a few of your videos so far and plan on watching (many) more. Your artwork is enviable! So much of what you've said here is exactly my story. I drew all of the time but lacked many of the fundamentals. My drawings were often good but not quite right. I stopped drawing consistently for a long time and am now trying to pick it up again. -The right way, this time. Thanks for the insights you are sharing with us.
I'm glad to see I'm not the only artist that wants to go back in time to shake their younger self and tell them to learn as much as they could. I was so stubborn when I started out. I only wanted to learn manga and nothing else. Now I'm starting to see more and more of my weaknesses and it's a bit discouraging. P.s. Please do a "How to draw Hands" video. PLEASE.
Faminisim Andrew Loomis has some books on hands and figure drawing that are in public domain. You should be able to do a quick google. You know, just to tide you over while you wait for a video.
Same here! I drew just because I loved doing it, people would give advice but I’d usually didn’t pay attention bc “I already knew how to draw”
@@santiinx737 Yeah, I was the same. Don't ya wish you could go back and shake your younger self? Lol
You want a really good advice ? Go on Google and search hands or look at your own hands and draw. You wan to learn other stuff like faces or the body? Draw real faces and real bodies and use references. Combine that with fundamentals and you are good to go. Sorry if my english is shit but its my third language
You are just amazing. Im going to start practicing every day.
I enjoyed this one, and have been away on explorations in the art world. However, my true fun seems to be rooted in drawing. I probably have a few of your videos I need to go bacn and review as they always help me. Your working on UA-cam motivates me to keep learning and to see processes that you display helps revitalize my motivation to learn even more. I’m 73 now…and your approach has matured a lot in the last few years, and yet you still have tha wry humor that puts you over the top. It is a pleasure seeing you work. I paint a few hours a day and have been drawing a few hours a day, but painting is my most challenging stuff to learn. Something about pencils gets me going. i bought a full set, I forget how many, of Prismacolor’s professional grade colored pencils. I love them. Favorite howevere is the mechanical pencil you turned me on to.
The path you took to get to now is what influenced and developed your own style. It's what makes it your style. Keep up the drawing and growing. Love your work.
Great video! Man I love your drawings so much. Your style is very unique. Also I definitely agree, I don't really like drawing realistically. There just isn't any uniqueness imo. If you're going to draw exactly the same as the reference, I'd rather just look at the reference lol
You have been such a big inspiration for me. Just thought I’d let you know that, thank you so much!😊
thats a really neat piece you did, kinda backed the whole "learn perspective thing," but i was dying to go over it with a fine-liner just to see how ink would change it lol. I'm very impressed with the variety of shades of graphite, it gave it an impressive look. good job!
the problem with this video is that i think nobody is listening to you, they are just watching what you are doing 🤔🤔🤔
I caught myself doing just that. Finished the video without hearing any of the words. Okay, after the first few lines I skipped to the end to see the finished picture but still..
The ‘problem’ is not with the video, it’s with the viewer. Viewers should be able to do both.
Till end i was just watching that complicated drawing u were doin
Man
Ur amazing
The best of all
thank you so much Dan for this video . I take up drawing since 5 month or more . I think I was so lucky to have my Best Friend had recommended me a drawing coarse to start with my first sketch book . I cant wait to see your video on recommending books for drawing .
This is the first time that I’ve watched a video where you do your own artwork while you speak as opposed to a tutorial on drawing the head or facial features or something like that. It’s mesmerizing and I love your art style!
I never used to really appreciate Japanese architecture and cities, but I find them to be really special now. Nice city-scape!
Me:* tries to have time to practice*
School: *I'm gonna stop you right there.*
Kinda true, but school is only 6 hours lol, you've still got another 6 hours until sleepy weepy time right? Or just do what I used to do at school age: treat every, single class, as an art class; cover ALL your workbooks in "high effort doodles" on every damn page. Now you're getting upto 6 hours of practice every day! Keep that up and obviously you're gonna be drawing sick quality by the time you leave school, unless thats next week or something :P
i agree yea school is only 7 hours, but i have so much homework and studying, and by then i’m ridicules tired i won’t want to draw
yeah cause a student hasn't got an hour of free time to spare a day. Do you think you're going to have more spare time if you work full time? Even while working a 40 - 50 hour work week there is still time in the day to draw. Going to school isnt going to stop you, laziness is.
glad to know all this studying of the fundamentals and practicing im doing is will be worth it; great video !
That is absolutely insane! The detail and perspective. Off the charts.
“I’m just drawing in my sketchbook here”
Finally someone that is obsessed with pencil drawings like me .I go nowhere without my shading pencils.
The drawing in the background is phenomenal... to be able to memorize such detail ! The perspective is great as well. I can imagine this knowledge could help lots more beginners thrive in art.🎨
I love it...most of all you are so encouraging. Thanks.
This vid is just a ten-minute flex haha.
WTF, his drawing, it's...........amazing!
Dude I love your style, just follow your own unique path. Anyone can take a course and they all look the same. Keep going mate👍
Astounding. Every detail you draw is just amazing. I've been drawing since I was 7 years old by just watching and pausing the TV. I'm 24 and soon I'll be turning 25 this month and I'm learning everything on my own.
wow youve got some real drawing stamina i wouldve fizzled out by the first building you started with.
I learned absolutely nothing other than you've been drawing for a long time
Then you people are clearly uneducated and have a shit brain and can understand basic things and what he is talking about is actually making sense to me soooo
@@imprint5238 not onabout you was I did you comment previous no you didn't keep outta shit which doesn't concern you mate
That intro, it's hilariously true! I felt that way as a kid, unfortunately for I never kept up with to really improve. You're great and hopefully you master color because that piece would look amazing in color!
same i really love black and white , i love doing a lot of details as well, youre amazing dude...
Im at the point where anything in my comfort zone looks great...anything outside of it, shit. My main problem is perspective. I can draw damn near anything well that doesn't involve too much perspective, but like a superhero facing forward with one knee up, I just cant get it to look right to save my life. So what I am currently doing is just forcing myself to repeatedly draw something im bad at, trying different approaches, until I can consistently get it right. I drew a lot as a kid through highschool and even started college as an art major, like you, I focused on my comfort zone, but I think I really missed out not finishing art school from a learning perspective in art (not from an income perspective, lol). The thing I hated myself for is I felt I abandoned my life long dream...and kind of quit art as a means to not think about it, had I remained dedicated to doing art in my spare time, I can only imagine how good I would be now. I finally dedicated myself (at 37) to draw every day, even if it is a quick 5 minute sketch. Its just frustrating to have non-artists think you are great and feel like a fraud, because you know you are like the highschool JV team compared to a professional team when it comes to serious artists.
Get yourself one of those artist's mannequins (the wooden figures with all their joints) and just hold it with the point of view that you wish to express in your drawing, bringing it closer to your eye for a more exaggerated perspective . You will see how the forms overlap. They are very useful.
The foundation of a good paintings is a good drawing-this is what i learned from art school. So keep up the good work !
I like using ballpoint pens but I learn through your videos and gain alot of insight with your skill in drawing👍 it's great!
Hi Dan, thanks again for the sick video! You have a brilliant sense of perspective so I was wondering if you could recommend me some books/other resources that you find useful in this area. Thanks!
Hey, sorry for the super late reply but yeah check out some books like - perspective made easy (Ernest norling) and How To Draw (Scott Robertson)
I really want to draw like that I love u art styles
I've been drawing since 1986 and I am still learning. Drawing is a lifelong pursuit and it grows and ages with you. It is the most intentional thing an artist does, because every mark is considered and created. You've got a great channel Dan keep up the hard work.
Hey -Thank you for sharing , I found what you said very helpful , so keep it up .
I 100 % agree with your statement about fundementals. I'm still not able to draw 1:1 realistic human head, but I actually drawing the scull like 2000 times, whenever I got bored, made my sketches look much better and even my comic drawing style has spawned from thousands of realistic and manga sketches I've been doing so far. I personally think, that you should do the lineart with an alcohol based pen or just a regular old ink pen. It will make your drawings pop out so much (coming from my personal experience).
Great video I did listen to what you said but just watching you draw that picture was soo relaxing bro
That was a pretty cool original drawing you completed Mr. Beardshaw. I can see the use of two point perspective, and I or anyone else can create buildings similar to the ones you have in the background with a basic understanding of 2 point perspective. How you came up with the buildings in the foreground though....wow! Very impressive.
Question, where do you get the patience to do such a detailed piece?? I finished a stippling landscape in 2 weeks... TWO!
Yeah but stippling is way more time consuming then something he is doing. Two weeks is good for a landscape imo
It's so frustrating that you don't show the whole page once it's finished.
I have just started learning and loved your video. Thank you
ty mate, i have just started learning foundamentals and this rly gave me a boost in motivating me
What I wish I knew when I started drawing? Everything! In all honesty I didn't have the best education and I actually learnt techniques outside of school and college, heck, I learn't more from you than any of my teachers.
How do you colour in with pencils that look... good?
@Vean Studio I use a 0.9 mm mechanical pencil and it gives enough resolution to make lines and when it dulls, i can make shadows.
TheVirtualInstructor.com has an excellent course on drawing with pencils, as well as a “25 days to better drawing” course that I highly recommend for beginners and people looking for well rounded instruction in art fundamentals. And his instruction is absolutely fantastic! Very affordable and I highly recommend!
This is a great video. . . I really appreciate this. . . Please, don't ever apologize for including parts or portions of your life story - that's a good thing. . . It gives the story and video so much more context. . . I love this. . . Thank you. . . Thank you. . . Thank you.
I appreciate you man, just the other day you helped me get a better understanding of the skull. Never change man!
Woah this is amazing reminds me of Ghost in the shell backgrounds
Your detailed drawing is wonderful. I've tried mechanical pencils, and I don't care for them as much as wood pencils because I'm more into value and tone. Value is a big area of drawing that I think is important to understand before moving on to color.
Love what you do...I was into etching a few years back it it was... as you said...lots of time and practice
4:10 休日 is holiday
Oh yes, I really can relate to all of this!
At first I was real happy when I discovered a that I actually COULD draw - without touching a pencil in over 40years (I'm 51).
But after a while that same frustration crept in! I'd expected progressing steadily. But my expectations paralised me totally.
At some point I realized that the end product should not matter to me ! I should simply draw as much as I can. THAT, and ONLY that, brings me further. Unsuccessful drawings bear the most learning potential. Repeating a drawing several times (in less time) is hard to do, but very helpful.
BUT I hardly get to watch you anymore, which us a shame. But I had to choose between you drawing, or me drawing =o)
hi thanks for the help i just starte drawing the other day and this helped alot knowing what u went through and stuff like that thx alot!
I can pretty much photocopy any image by hand I got rly good at drawing cartoon characters and landscapes and such that’s how I taught myself how to draw. I could probably copy your drawing even with all the detail but I could never pull an image from my own head. That you pull that much detail out of your head amazes me.
Me, someone who’s been drawing for almost three years: I mean, idk man, maybe he has some forbidden knowledge that I don’t know about...
I've been drawing a lot recently. Is it weird that I can smell the paper and graphite from your video?
Great drawing. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. You're still young enough to develop your skills further. I was nearly 50 when I changed my career! As I say to my kids " Where you are at this moment is where you're meant to be!"
Dude you have such a great approach. Keep it up, keep pushing yourself. Also to me it looks like your perspective drawings are getting better and better. Cheers!
WOAH I HAVENT SEEN YOUR VIDS FOR A WHILE, WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR COOL ATTIC?! Nice video btw
You are honestly not saying anything "new" BUT that (japanese?) Urban landscape is dope!!!!😮
Thank you and thumbs up Dan!, subbed and please keep the tips and knowledge coming, thanks again!!
I really like you, you love teaching and do it well and are excellent in what you do and above all you love and encourage learning. Go ahead and I wish you sucess. Some kids who are disadvantaged maybe lost family or deprived will benefit lots from your skills if you like to volunteer you will open another world to them which will take them away from the brutal realities they live in and you never know some or one of them may be a talent you helped out. Well done you are light
Name of the music plz , 9:10 .
The amount of detail is insane!
Awesome drawing. So much fun to watch you make it. Although at the end I was craving for you to ink it!
Witch is better to learn (draw) the pen with that grafite (i dont know how that is called im portuguese but i can talk and write in english ) or a pencil
Pencil is a billion times better than pen! You can erase pencil and it’s super easy to use. I tried pen and it does not work well unless you are doing cartoons. Pencil is the best for realism in my opinion
But you can learn pen but it’s super hard to get the pressure right and to master it
I think the person means a pencil Vs mechanical pencil or lead holder
If you’re talking about a mechanical pencil (the pen with graphite) vs a traditional wooden pencil, it honestly depends on preference. With a traditional pencil you can get more variety in your lines and can use that to your advantage for things like shading. If you like a more uniform, almost structured look with very little line variation, or just don’t like sharpening a pencil, then I would go for a mechanical pencil.
I personally use both, it just depends what kind of look I’m going for and what I have on hand.
Drawing is cool and all, but what is this magic you are using in the backround?
As always Dan AMAZING video! Thanks for the tips! I taught my self how to draw realistically back in March and I am now at the point where people (who are older than me!) are asking me to draw things for them! I draw portraits usually but I’ve gotten kinda interested in architecture and perspective. Also Dan I was thinking for a future video, you could find star constellations on google, draw them on a paper, and make a realistic drawing of what it’s supposed to be (like for Hercules, you could draw a realistic picture of Hercules from that simple constellation shape!) have an awesome day Dan and I can’t wait to see more amazing content from you in the future!
Dude....I am beside myself. You totally rock!! Obviously we all have our own style and medium but this is just freaking stunning. I get so frustrated. And then I over draw and screw it up. But point made. To be confident you have to have a sense of success or drive and when you improve, you start to feel successful. Improvement however comes from mistakes and learning from them.....mistakes only come from drawing and drawing and drawing. And more drawing. It's difficult to let go of the OCD desire for it to be perfect. Ug. You've inspired me and encouraged me to "pencil" on.
Bravo.
Always a pleasure watching your process! Could you slow down the speed? I’d like a better opportunity to see your brainwork. Thanks much!!
Lauri
Windkisssed yeah i can but I just match the length with the audio. I’ll start something like a patreon for real time footage etc
love the business in your drawings the buzz of eye candy, lots to look at
I use references all the time but if the angles or light is between characters I am drawing together that can mess things up a bit. H C Brown has a great intro on colour theory. It’s something I was vaguely aware of but she broke it down for me with great humour as well. Then UA-cam recommend a load of stuff for me (including your channel 😄). You’re making me think I should go practice some perspective now 😑 amazing video🙌
I love that bitcoin reflection
