    I not scared of making something bad just scared of using up all my oil paints for nothing because there so expensive

    • @MissLivYoung
      @MissLivYoung 7 років тому +277

      But that's the thing, you're not using them on nothing! You're using them to learn and to experiment and to make mistakes that will help you in your next painting. I know how it is not wanting to use something because it cost you a lot of money, but if you don't use them at all, THAT's when they're wasted!

    • @dillan-loves-phan2391
      @dillan-loves-phan2391 7 років тому +141

      Try experimenting with cheaper supplies then maybe you won't be as scared of wasting them by accident because they didn't cost you a ton of ,money

      There are so many ways to get around this! Cheap student paints exist for experiments; limit your palette or size to reduce waste; you can experiment in other media, too.

    "Because I wasn't exceptional in positive ways, I based my worth on the idea that I must be exceptional in negative ways, my problems must be bigger, more unique than anyone else, no one understood how hard it was to be me, and from that I gained a weird sense of being important and special but not in any way that made me happy."

    This has helped me so much and opened my mind. I'm currently really depressed because I didn't get accepted into an art school that I've dreamed of for some time now and I feel like such a failure, I had so many people support me and it was really embarrassing having to let them down, I feel so fake and I'm questioning my self if I really enjoy art or if I just do it to satisfy my family.. this really opened up my eyes however. I've been so grumpy and distant and i really should be happy of what i have. I'm so stuck on trying to get in and feeling like a disappointment that i haven't taken a look at my surroundings. I chose this life of having to be declined and such because I am an artist. I cant go back or else I'll feel like I wasted money on supplies and time so there's only one way to go which is forward. Thank you. You really made me feel so much better

    • @RobinSealark

      I'm glad you found some comfort from this! I understand how much that sucks- feeling that kind of rejection and having everyone around you aware of something you wish you could stash in a box and never have to publicize. I'm glad you're able to start a new perspective on it though. I really hope it will be to your benefit

      another scared army artist here! I'm taking graphic design and my teachers are dope tho and one of them was a uni lecturer before so I'm getting good tips!. I used to be strict but now I try to have fun while doing challenges!! my teacher told us sometimes you just gotta put on music and paint what you feel, it's hard but you'll get there army!!

      ARMY Forever yea I wish I could be one but first of all my mom doesn't approve and says to do stereotypical business jobs in a offese, but I think it's boring unless it's a gaming company and my mom doesn't like that either so I just ignored her and then at school I was drawing something from a video game and it look pretty good for what the game was, and my teacher just goes in my desk, takes my note book, rips out the drawings and put them in the trash, I will never forget that, especially since I was traumatized. And to prove how bad she was, she assaulted me while eating lunch she took my fork while there was still food on it and stuffed it in my lunch box just because she was FORCING ME against my own will to go to a place to work on one of the ONLY times I get a break! She's a loonatic! And she once snooped in another students phone AND THEY HAD A PASSCODEand she somehow hacked her way in. IM SURPRISED SHE DIDNT GET ARRESTED FOR ASSAULTING A STUDENT AND SNOOPING THROUGH PERSONAL STUFF, it wasn't my phone btw, I was smart enough to not trust the teachers with my phone. But enough of me going on a rant I just can't stop talking about how much of a female dog she is. But anyways YOU CAN BE WHO YOU WANT TO BE. ITS 2017! Just DO IT XD.

    This video helped me. While I believe strongly in forging ahead, and building despite failures (learn from them) I struggle a lot with the idea of not being good enough. Even though I know my art style is different, not worse, than others, it's still a struggle. Your video game me something to think about. Also helps to know I'm not alone with these insecurities :)

    I just started reading that very book. I hate/love showing my sketchbooks. Some people rave, others say nothing at all. What I almost hate is having a great result that I don't know how I accomplished - it just sort of happened. Rather than build on it, I avoid doing anything like it because I don't want anyone to see it was just luck. Were you my teacher, I'd keep you up to your armpits in apples. Yeah, I went there.

    I just started watching your videos and I couldn't refrain from commenting. I literally want to quote everything you said in this video! The connotation and message you're putting across shoots into so many aspects of living and pursuing happiness in the moment. This video was such a good reminder to not settle for mediocrity, but rather see things for their average nature, and be grateful for what that "mediocrity" entails. I loved when you said, "if you identify too heavily with some part of your life, you create blind spots for yourself that may keep you from achieving greater happiness." I also loved how this applies to art, self-worth, and how digital media plays largely into feeling successful. This was such a great reminder, preach it girl! 🙌🏼

    Thank you Robin for taking the time to make this video. What everyone should realise, is we are like no one else alive. No one can do what we can and vice versa. I love what I do especially creatively. My whole life is creative (led by the creative impulse)not just my art. I believe everyone is born to create in some unique way. Its all about believing in yourself even if no one else does. Loving what you do and doing everything with love. Have your own vision. I don't equate success with money I equate it with satisfaction.

    I've always felt that my art isn't good enough! I still do, and some people think that's motivational because it makes you want to better your skills. NOT me! I always either avoid creating things that are not for an art class, or just make something and feel so insecure about it.

    I didn't realise how much I needed to listen to this video. I've struggled with self doubt and countless other negative feelings towards myself (just like so many others around the globe) for as long as I can remember and your words have really hit me. They've reassured me how important it is to simply focus and take the time to think over what the positive aspects of my art are and how I can reinforce my techniques or even my thought process into either more art or just life in general to better myself. Your whole outlook on your struggles and art journey are really inspiring, and I feel like I now know how important struggling/ trial and error is and how much I really have learned from it without realising. So thank you so much for this video, I can almost literally feel something in my brain switch and I can't stop smiling because of it ♡

I have been feeling the same way you have been lately and in your recent videos its like you are speaking my thoughts. The best advice I've heard is 'embrace failure' and I heard it from an artist about 2-3 years ago. Especially on UA-cam, people learning their particular art, thinks it's easy; when in fact, it's a lot of work and disappointment to get to a level of progress that is acceptable to YOU. For instance, they're told that anyone can paint. But to paint well or at a level where you achieve a measure of satisfaction takes time and practice and disappointments.
    This is a very good video. it's important to know the reality of what you are trying to achieve. I like that you give specific measures to determine what you want to achieve and the importance of how that success is perceived by you vs. others. These are things that I've embraced over time by paying attention to artists who are willing to share their struggles.

    As an introverted artist that has recently put her art for everyone to see and maybe even purchase, this helped me a lot to realize what to truly value, thank you so much Robin, I constantly put myself down, but it's part of the process, thank you for reminding me to keep going at doing what I love!

    I don't work with oils but I've always wondered how to clean brushes with oil paint on them, I'm pretty sure it isn't water because the two don't mix well?

      gigi gigi you use a solvent to thin the paint but you can use soap and water to clean your brushes when you are done just make sure your brushes are completely dry before painting with them again. There are also water mixable oil paints.

It's very difficult to find artists that are truly humble in their craft like yourself. You are a perfect teacher. Thanks for posting :)

    Robin I'm working on my senior thesis, and I chose something I knew was challenging. I'm known as an intelligent student. Now I'm hitting walls, unable to think in smart ways, and my advisor was very disappointed. And after listening to your video, I get it!
    I am not entitled to happiness all the time. It is important to have difficult conversations. Making mistakes is essential for progress. And I need to take charge of my life and step out of my comfort zone.

    The art teacher portion of this video is totally spot on when comparing to what I experienced working in schools. Never was a full time art teacher, only a substitute. Went through the art Ed college program experience though. Everything you stated completely resonated! Also your art advice across the board is particularly encouraging and positive. That is definitely needed, especially these days!

    This is my favorite video that you have made so far. I think that we all get so caught up in wanting to make a lot of money, be super successful in our career(maybe even one that doesn't makes us happy), family pressures like getting married or having children, doing really well academically, as well as and other social pressures, that we end up constantly competing with ourselves or others around us and we lose sight of what really makes us happy. I was an artist all through high school and I loved it, but I had several people in my life that told me that I could never make a "decent" living from doing art. So I ended up going and getting a degree from a really good school and after over a year of searching I finally landed a job in my field of study. During my time there, I realized that my life the way it was at the time did not make me happy. I hated the monotony of waking up, driving to work, sitting at a desk all day staring at a computer screen, and working on projects that I didn't care about just to earn a less than exciting paycheck. Then after all of that I would go to job #2 and work a few hours, then when I got home I had tons of house work to complete because apparently it is not socially acceptable to leave clean laundry in piles on the couch, lol. After about 6 months of this I was completely burnt out. I felt that because I had so many "adult" responsibilities, I didn't have time to enjoy my life. I didn't have time to travel, to paint, to spend time with my animals or my family and friends, all the things that brought joy to my life were constantly being pushed aside to make room for my other "more important" responsibilities. I finally said enough is enough, I refuse to continue sacrificing my precious time(because we only have so much of it) for things that don't bring me joy. So I left my full time job and went back to working part time as a bartender so that I could have more time for my artwork and my animals. Even though I have less financial stability, I am happier than I ever have been because I finally feel that there is a balance between the things that I need to do and the things that I want to do.

    I never had any struggles with self confidence with my art, maybe because I know that I can't compare with others and know that the effort I'm putting into it is already something to be proud of. But this video can help with sooo many things besides art. So thank you so much. Just after watching this video I already feel happier and a bit more controlling over my own life and happiness.
