- CRUSH VS CORE VS CODE!
Check out the first in our new 'Tone Check' video series focused on comparing guitar gear, first up we're taking a look at 3 leading practice amps, the Orange Crush 20RT, Blackstar ID:CORE 20 v3 and Marshall Code25.
These 3 guitar amplifiers all sit roughly around the same price, but vary wildly in their complexity. The Orange is a classic plug'n'play with minimal controls, the Blackstar offers 6 different voices, FX and USB connectivity, and the Marshall takes tone tweaking to new heights with its digital modular approach.
For us, the Blackstar ID:CORE stood out with its solid sound straight out-of-the-box and bonus features like the stereo speakers and the new Cab Rig Lite software for recording over USB.
Tech details: Andy plugs straight into the amp with a custom Tele and an ESP E-II Eclipse. Sound was recorded via an AKG 414 condenser though a Universal Audio Apollo x8 interface.

Blackstar hands down. And the thing is easily tweaked, the versatility is amazing. And the amp responds to picking dynamics.
It really shines when reverb/delay are used as it's delivered in a room filly lush stereo sound 😎
The ID Core v3 is the first modeling amp I don’t feel like I need to use my audio engineering certificate to make sound right, it just does. Especially that super crunch. It could just have that and be a solid amp. Plate reverb and tape delay with a teeny tiny bit of roto sounds like every good album in the late 70s/early 80s.
0:30 , 0:50 - orange
1:10 , 1:39 - BS
1:50 , 2:19 - Marshall
Loved the review and comparison, so thanks for doing the video :) I'm fortunate enough to own the Marshall Code and the Blackstar ID:Core V3. For me, the Blackstar is a doddle if you want to easily dial in a quick tone and just noodle, as the options and dials are so intuitive. The Code does really well when you Bluetooth your phone into it, as the Android app for adjusting the pre-sets is super easy to use, and Marshall have done a great job of not neglecting it and ensuring it's tweaked and improved where it was needed.
Marshall code for me hands down. It does take forever to figure out and tweak it but what a sound I get out of my code 50. This is my 4th! Amp purchase in a year and think I finally found what I want. You can get ANY sound out of it and loud as hell.
The Orange Crush 20rt Sounds really good! It's really gives us that raw vintage type sound. Overall the Orange Crush 20rt is the best for me
When you were playing I found myself bobbing my head up and down without realizing it. Nice playing man!
Cheers
The Blackstrar is niice , for me it was better than the others, nice review
This is the first comparison video where I thought all three sounded good. Most videos the Orange sounds thin and tinny.
I prefer the Blackstar overall but each one has something to offer.
I had a Marshall code 25 for 5 years and I loved it
Great Video Andy. As a Blackstar owner I am a little prejudice but to me this was clearly the best of the three. Great amp at low volume and very easy to fine good tones on. My only negative is that this amp is not very loud even for 20 watts.
Cheers Len
Orange has its own character in cleans.
I have an original (V 1) Blackstar ID Core 40 Stereo amp I got for under $100 a few years ago and love the features it has. I've since modded it by adding switched speaker output jacks to make it more versatile as well as a powerful tiny amp it already was to begin with.. plugged into my surround system I get greater sound with added volume and depth of tone.. I only play at home for fun and the ultra modified cheap Chinese made Starcaster Strat I striped to bare body and neck, then rebuilt with many added and upgraded features, too many to mention here.. with a space themed custom paint job and renamed the 'Stellarcaster' to make it the complete rig for home play. The included factory features in the amp along with the rest of my setup you'd be hard pressed to improve on the tonal depth and variety I can access. and I still haven't added any pedals just yet.
Cheers, thanks for your feedback
Great comparison. Thank you!
Blackstar sounds fine
Blackstar way out shined the others in all categories. I didn't think the Orange was even near the Marshall or Blackstar. The Marshall had too much bottom where as the DS cut like a razor ! ! !
Orange sounded least digitally manipulated to me, which I prefer. I like the Blackstar sounds too, Marshall is not to my taste at all.
Can’t add much to the discussion as I’ve just bought a Crush 20RT - which I use for blues and jazz. What I have found is by using a cheapish IR loading pedal with it, I can get a phenomenal acoustic guitar sound for when I let loose my inner folkie… currently playing with a D28 IR and an Ovation Celebrity IR - which gives me all the tones I could want - except for a fender twin-reverb, which I’ll try installing tomorrow! I decided that having all the modelling options in the amp would just get in the way of what I should be doing - which is playing good jazz and blues!
Thanks for your insight
If you like a solid Vintage sound, go for Orange.."for me"
Blackstar sounded the least toy-like and probably has the best features. Orange still sounded decent for its tiny speaker, Marshall did not impress me at all.
Realizing that YT's audio is not a perfect replication of an amp's true sound and feel...I prefer the Crush. Blackstar held a close second but sounded less warm and natural. If I were solely going off this video, I'd say the Matshall was too thin and "breathy" and sounded distant even at similar volumes. Thanks for the demo.
Orange 20 rt definitely has the best saturated sound out of all three,
The black star sounded good but was too Trebly for my taste!
It was the orange for me felt like Ethereum brilliant
Blackstar is the best of them
The Blackstar smashes through that!
Yeh we agree
Marshall Code 25 for me. I love this thing!
I think that orange is better than other amp.in clean is more cleaner than the other and also in crunch.
Blackstar 😁👍🏽 !!!
Id core 10 v3 owner in od levels, can't go above 30% vol. Its way too loud for room practice which means. Volume for me is no problem coming from 10w amplifier.
Blackstar....uauuuuuu!!!!!!!!!!!! 👏
How can I connect my processor to blackstar v20 as there is no any return option?…..reply appreciated 🙏
I think this is a very good review. Thanks.
I feel Marshall is always best paired with separate pedals. The amps and cabs are lovely, but the effects are always boring
In this lineup though, that's real tough between the Blackstar and Orange. The real mid range crunch on the Orange sounds gorgeous, and paired with well mixed bass, would make a good classic rock sound, but that Blackstar has some real deep sound to it which is perfection
Yeh we tend to agree
Te Orange wins the clean, But as they got dirtier the Blackstar, imho started pulling ahead. It was the only usable lead tone. The Orange was just a mess on the lead, and the Code was thin and weak.
1) blackstart 2) orange 3)marshall
Marshall. It produces Powerful sound.🤞🤞🤞🤞
Marshall has a bit of an ice pick clean tone. Orange's overdrive is kinda muddy. I felt the blackstar overall has the best tones. I did like the Marshall's overdrive tone though. My pick, Blackstar!
Blackstar sounded best by far to my ears
Orange crush 🔥
What are your opinions on the blackstar speaker sound? I’ve seen some reviews where people are very negative towards how the blackstar sounds
well, i got one, its fine if you just doin with clean / lil bit crunch, but it doesnt work on the high gain, they cant go "Loud"
@@ichal8554 not loud even for bedroom?
@@AyushMehta8 something that i mean loud is not the volume dude, if you go ther for a bedroom it will be very loud volume but not “loud” (or maybe scream) for the gain
I wonder how the Fender Mustang Lt 25 compares to this
Blackster 🔥
blackstar Number 1
Blackstar id core 20 is the best one
Yes we agree
It gets even better when the speakers break in.
Could it sound with the blackstar like the neural dsp? I want to know if with a new architect there are possibilities of approaching that metal sound, I do not expect it to be the same but if it is close and it is decent then it is worth it, apart you can use it as an interface and you can record with it.
It certainly can get close
Damn the blackstar really wiped the floor with the Orange and the Marshall 😱
Blackstar for the win!
I think the Orange was ahead everywhere except the lead tone. The Blackstar took it there.
NUX mighty 20BT > Marshall code 25.. Marshall MG15cfr with Celestion g12 sounds better than code 25.. is code 25 actually a marshall product?
Orange crushed it, haha get it🤘
Orange too bassy and mushy, Marshall roo trebbley - Blackstar sounded just right.
Orange ❤️
Black star sounded best overall but I am getting a Code 25 for the features like being able to play a backing track through Bluetooth, what phones have aux ports these days? The orange amp needs to be orange it just looks wrong in black
I thought that the Marshall won the clean, the Orange won the crunch, and the Blackstar won the lead.... btw, is it just me or does the Marshall Code50 sound 10x's better than its younger 'sibling' the 25???
Orange for distortion. Black star for cleans.
Orange sounds as Orange, Blackstar what a Jewel! Marshall sounds too digital...i rather Orange
Orange
🍊 sounded the best and is all analog the others a digital.
Orrible orange,marshall nice,blackstar the best
Marshall sounded better on the high gain channel.
Blackstar
Thank you for nice video
\Blackstar/
Prefer Blackstar
THX for making this vid, to me and i say im a fan of Blackstar amps, the Orange sounds best to me in this test, got me a midro terror haha :)
The Orange MORE Sexy and Catchy for me... I love natural and vintage sound 👍
No doubt that the Marshall is the King
But the Blackstar is obviously the 1st runner up
And also it's cheaper than Marshall 😅
I thought the Marshall sounded better.
Blackstar sounds stronger. Orange crush has softer edges.
Orange beezzzz! Not the!
I own the black star doesn't take pedals well :(
I own the 40w version, it takes boost pedals and overdrive pedals well. Well, I use the clean and crunch voices. I never use the od voices, so this could be why my pedals sound great.
Learn to use it. It takes pedals OK, but has no effects loop. Remember not to use default voices (which have onboard effects applied). Select manual mode, select a Clean and adjust the voice so effects other than those you want are deselected. Don\t double up with a pedal effect over the same applied integral effect.
@@Mr-Safology Same. In fact I own x2 ID:Core 40s, a V1 &V2 among half a dozen others larger and smaller. My favourite practice amp along with the super portable Fly 3s.
@@theblytonian3906 The fly3s are awesome little amps. Really good to take on the go, even for a quick practice session late at night.
Marshall is expensive for me.
i believe the Marshall and the Orange had better tones than the Blackstar on this video.
1 Orange, 2 Marshall, 3 Blackstar. The orange had a bigger sound as if played on a bigger cabinet. Marshall had good tone (I own 1 by the way) but tiny sound as if played on a small cheap bluetooth speaker. Blackstar had the same tiny sound and was damn too bright, lacking low frequency tones. On the Marshall I really like the Bluesbreaker amp!!!!
The Blackstar was marginally better than the Orange clean. But the Orange clearly won the distorted sounds. It was not even close.
Orange sounded best, Blackstar too bright……..Marshall just not great.
3000$ guitar. 100 $ amps 😕
@@NickVondo-su5ol lol
Marshall won the match...
marshall code is terrible song..
Marshall win
Using a Tele 🤢🤮
That’s a recipe for bad tone.
Blackstar
