In today's video we talk through our process for making a natural wood perch for our blue and gold macaw Shelby. Making home made parrot toys is cheap and quick and if you have ever wondered how to make a natural perch for a macaw or pet bird then this video may be of some help to you.
A few words of warning, make sure you find out what woods are safe for parrots, what trees are poisonous for macaws and that the materials you are using are parrot safe. In the UK we don't have overly dangerous woods or trees however you are still better off checking.

Awesome video guys! You can also use something called Virkon S to clean wood. It’s entirely bird safe and actually the only thing to kill PBFD so extremely strong and super cheap!
Think we’re gonna make one of these for Corliss once her aviary is up!

@@ShelbyTheMacaw it’s on Amazon for like £20 or something. It’s a powder. We’ve had ours for almost 2 years now. Clean everything bird related with it 😂

I've a load of apple tree wood on the roof of the bird rooms getting sun bleached it also gets soaked in milton before I use it in toys ..but omg wood drill bits go blunt so fast ..that's very cool guys..well done..

Great video guys. Simple honest and inspiring . have found Charlie our old macaw wasn’t used to toys when we took her on ,but would have a go at plain branches and cardboard , so we have made 95% of her destructibles . Dye wood with food colouring, and vegetable dyes, try beetroot and carrot maybe, also get yourself some hydrogen peroxide, spray your branches and leave to dry , it’s harmless once dried and will effectively kill anything nasty lurking in the branches. Mould spores etc ... looking forward to more content !!! Stay safe x

How do u guys keep his feathers so nice? My 7 month macaw tail feathers looks like garbage due to him moving so much in his cage
Shelby doesn't even have a tail 🤣She ruined her tail feathers too, snapped a load of them off completely and some moulted out, and so she has no tail at the moment. It is completely normal, and actually we're doing a video on this very soon!
