    Homemade perches are the best. All of my birds have homemade perches using an assortment of wood. The perches are in assorted sizes. Dowels are instruments of torture on our bird’s feet. ❤️

      It's sad, dowels shouldn't be - but they are.
      If a perch isn't being bitten and worn, it's the wrong mateial (toxic wood would be wrong too, of course!
      I've researched and tested the wood I have acces to - how have you figured out what you can use for perches?

      I did my research on the net to know which woods are ok and which ones are toxic. But I find them hard on her feet. Last week I took off her pine balcony because her feet were getting red and irritated.

    Actually I did research on safe wood. I looked for articles and called the State of Fl. Agriculture and wild life. I asked my avian vet. And believe it or not, I called Tampa Zoo and Busch Gardens. My perches are, apple wood, orange wood, maple wood(from New Hampshire) and bottle brush wood (gifted from a friend). I also have a cholla perch I purchased. My husband cut down an older orange tree and made flat perches from the trunk for Ivar. The rest of the tree was turned into mulch as it was rotting. We “baked” the wood in the oven at 275 for a couple of hours to kill any larvae or burrowing insects. Then allowed it to cool. It’s funny that none of my Caiques chew perches but the budgies adore chewing and stripping bark.

    Thank you for sharing this. It was so helpful. So I can make my feather babies more perches. the nuts are called wing nuts. What is the screw adaptor you use to install the studs. Now I can I can make my babies perches for inside and out side their cages.

      We just found the adaptor on Amazon. It’s called a hanger bolt driver.

      I've also seen them called 'double hanger' screws-
      Yes, make perches! I like changing the perches up too- my parrots like the change.

    Do you recommend disinfecting the branches before making them into perches?

    • @ParrotBliss
      @ParrotBliss  2 роки тому +2

      Yes- just to make sure. Baking them is a common way-

    Awesome video. Gonna try that with a dying cherry tree in the yard. How do you disinfect the wood? One of the notes said bake? Temperature and time please . Many thanks. Another great video. Oh one last thing, my mango does not like change in the cage. I assume that’s normal but don’t want to stress her out. Any suggestions?

    • @ParrotBliss
      @ParrotBliss  Рік тому +1

      Honestly, research disinfecting. I disinfect with vinegar, sometimes I bake and I also leave wood out in the sun. Change - really? Bonnie is fine with it, all my birds are. Do you have a ‘safe’ place for Mango to sleep?

    • @hammer-r
      @hammer-r Рік тому

      @@ParrotBliss thanks for the advice. I’ll try that. Yea Mango sleeps in her cage at night and when we aren’t home. It’s rather large. She feels safe in there I guess. But oddly, when we uncover her and don’t take her out right away, she likes to hang on the floor/grate in the corner. I guess she feels safe down there.

      I wish I had access to bottle brush branches (I think that's what it's called) - the tree makes bottle brush looking red flowers - very beautiful. This wood is non-toxic and soft, almost spongy.
      My parrots also do well with untreated pine. Soft- they chew them to make them round when I get 2x2 inch!

      @@ParrotBliss nice yh I've heard most fruit tree woods are safe crab apple trees and there's quite a few people with bottle brush bushes around here too maybe I can ask to take sum clippings also I've heard eucalyptus is safe but I've also heard some say it's not safe but my mountain parakeets managed to get a good branch full of leaves of eucalyptus the other day the cage must have been placed to close as I put them outside on sunny days and they seem to be fine at the moment 🤞

    All I have ever used for perches is Madrona and Manzanita... too many problems with other types of wood both natural and processed. Better to be safe than sorry.

      For the people living in a more northern state, apple tree wood is great and the birds love chewing on the wood, however remember to bake the branches first! You can google the recommended time and temp.
