Cats have a marking gland by their cheek...strange object comes into "their" space...they just have to mark it as "theirs"...same if they head-butt you. Touching the top of their head to mostly living things...my cats head--butt my dogs, and occasionally me too :)

You can get your counters resprayed Catherine. I got it and and my presses done last summer and they look beautiful and are brand new again. I know youl enjoy painting the doors yourself but might be worth checking out the counter when your working out your budget. Dublin company. I couldn't recommend them highly enough x
