As a project manager how you communicate is definitely important. I speak differently between engineers, my fellow PMs, senior management and tradespeople. I am a professional friend maker. It will get you far to have empathy and know how to make people happy.
How would one work on being a better “friend maker”? I’m currently being trained by a senior PM and being “molded” specifically for the company and the one thing I struggle with most is speaking to people and holding conversations.
@cringesh1t427 hey, try creating more meaningful conversations with people. Allow people to speak about their interests, and to do that you need to be an active listener: maybe ask more open ended questions this helps to keep the conversation going

This is spot on, from top to bottom. The Project Manager hate is real but usually dies down (for the most part) when they see your value add because the same ones that hated me now come to me for support 😒😩. The panic is real too, even though I tell myself not to panic I still find myself freaking out at times.
I'm into my 4th year as a PM, and I am about to start a new job. I appreciate the reminders. I've been in the I forwarded before verifying boat.😂😢😅 I learned

Managing includes scrutinizing deliverables, removing blockers, making sure that things are always moving forward, figuring out how to adjust the budget when unexpected things come up, preventing scope creep, and communicating with everyone all the time. Communication is the biggest point of failure IMO. Telling people what happened instead of sharing with them how things are going.

The core project team is usually made up of you, you, and you. Decision making and direction made by other managers "stakeholders", your assigned resources only listen to direction if their functional manager tells them to, and you are not part of the management team within your organization. PMs are "pooper scoopers" or catch all. Responsibility without authority. After 10 years of performing project management in various industries, I laugh when I hear someone becoming a project manager. It is a great career for people that are easy going and go with the flow. If you are a take charge person that likes to lead, this is a bad career choice.

@flyoverjr6265 if you want to lead and be respected and rewarded for your hard work, operations management is a better option. Maybe IT Project Management is an option if you have a technical background.

Hey. There is no straight path for everyone . Ie do a cert and get the job. Anyone that preaches that is a liar lol. But you can defo still get a role within pm, If your able to showcase your skills effectively, sell yourself well, and position yourself
I want to switch career into PM . I have been in the real estate/construction space for over a decade. But it seems it's more about Agile PM now which is more emphasized in the IT. My confusion now is do i stay focus on Construction PM or move to IT PM. Please, need some advice.
I personally think you should stay where your expertise lies, so you can demand a higher salary from earlier. Using an agile methodology over a waterfall methodology will depend on what industry you are in. You can’t use agile in construction so you don’t need to concern yourself with that. And there are plenty of roles in construction which only people with expertise can get, so I personally wouldn’t transition to IT where it is super competitive now for beginners as well as experienced PMs. That’s just my opinion. The choice is yours

Hey, just a standard laptop with a fast processor will be fine. Make sure you have the Microsoft office suite on there also, you gonna need that :)
