- Here is a classic interview with Roald Dahl, perhaps the finest writer for children of all time.
Within the short film he discusses his routine, his craft and his work space.
I do not own the copyright but felt it would be useful for educational purposes for budding young writers out there.

What a genius. Writing brilliant stories mainly for children is surely one of the loveliest gifts.
and the fact,that children audiences is kinda difficult,he kinda likes doing adult audiences,cause they have a easy type of like.
You're books certainly read, Mr. Dahl. I grew up reading your books; and like Matilda, I turned 30 this year. I'm a middle school English teacher in India and your books light up my students' faces like I imagine they did mine those long years ago.

I find it quite fascinating how he depicts his working environment. How he explains the state of the room to how comfortable his arm chair is and how many pencils he uses. Even in this short clip you get a taste of what a brilliant storyteller he was.
I know. This goes with a rule of mine: be comfortable. And how can you get more comfortable than this?

I’m obsessed with Danny the Champion of the World my first book I read.
I love this man, so sad that he passed away. He needs to be more popular, I’ll always cherish his books.

Roald Dahl was born on September 13th, 1916. If he was 66 in this documentary, which took place in the summer - it was probably filmed in the summer of 1982.
Actually, he would have been 65 that summer. He turned 66 in September.
Everything about this video is satisfying, from his voice to the birds in the background to the scenery to the way he brushes the rubber of his board and sharpens his pencils, something about all of it satisfies the inner child in me, I guess him living in that reality is what allowed him to write books that reach children in the way they do.

This man wrote most of my favorite childhood books. I would read them over and over till the pages would tear. and at the age of 22 this is the first time I'm seeing his face. I'm crying. I'm so thankful for all he's done, for coloring my childhood days with beauty and mystery and excitement..I'm forever thankful..i love and respect him so much❤

I'm almost 40 years old and am yet another persoon who has grown up reading this great man's books, I'd never heard his voice before. I can remember seeing in one of his books he'd died in 1990 and that made me really sad because I knew he wouldn't write any more. I loved Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, BFG and Danny the Champion of the World
He had always inspired me with his beautiful books and imaginations
Roald's voice and quiet sense of humour gives me a sense of quietude. I really love seeing him sitting in his armchair and peacefully writing in his quiet little hut. He must have been very well organised with a good writing schedule.

The bit where he talks about how children read the same books is very relatable. I remember reading a 200 page book in a single day and then re-reading it again about a week later.

He is an inspiration for me. I love creativity and his sense of adventure when he was young. Reading his going solo book has given me a urge to explore and it is my favourite one. His adventurers are very fascinating. I really wish he was among us in the present. Rest in peace.
He’s like me, just wants a quiet place to let his mind wander, little man cave, comfy chair, blanket, and off to work. What a beautiful man. That’s how you live.
I absolutely adore this man. When I finished reading Boy and Going Solo , I was not finished. I read them again until they were memorized.
You should check out the expansed edition of Boy called More About Boy... Its a really nice sort of 'directors cut' of the book. Got my first Dahl book in 1988...still can pick up any of his stuff and just lose myself in it. His novels for adults and short stories he wrote for Playboy are excellent too.
The first two minutes of this are the most soothing piece of film that I know.
I grew up reading his books! Read pretty much every single one that I could find.
It's also how I learned English as an ESL student in 2005.

I’m an adult but I still love reading Mr. Dahls books. Incase anyone who isn’t aware he also wrote adult mysteries and fiction and a collection of ghost stores as well. Should anyone be craving a more adult version of Mr. Dahl’s writing.
Like many others, I am a life long and huge admirer of Roahl Dahl and grew up reading and re-reading many times his works, but (as now a father myself). I was crestfallen to read that his own daughter, Tessa, accused him of being a selfish father. She once said: "Daddy gave joy to millions of children. But I was dying inside."
Such things happen. Enid Blyton's daughter Imogen said sth very similar of her mother. Just because a person is a great writer, doesn't mean they are a great parent. There are many other examples. One other is A.A. Milne.

I adored him when I was five/six, and all the way through my early childhood. I’m now nearly fourteen, and still consider this man my hero. I even have all my old books of his still on my shelf. Matilda will always be my most cherished and favourite book, no matter how old I may be.

I just read "Boy" and "Going Solo" for the first time. Great books... I had no idea that he flew Hurricanes in WWII and saw such intense aerial combat. And he found peace after that. He did SO much in his life, it's amazing.

What a wonderful little documentary. It's so fascinating to find out where and how famous writers write their stories.
Some people claim Dah had OCD:
"British neurologist Andrew Larner, also suggests that Dahl later exhibited what may have been symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder.
“[F]or example,” notes Larner, “when writing in his famous shed, he had to have a particular type of paper (yellow American Legal), and both a particular brand and a specific number (6) of pencils.”"
A lot of writers (including me) have favourite things, places and rituals when writing, so for me, his ritual was not really connected to OCD.
I read his books when I was young, now my kids read it too. 👍👍👍

And yet even as an adult, I’ve read various books multiple times as have many acquaintances of mine who are readers as well. We are all children at heart I suppose.

I was reading Matilda and my little brother decided to pour juice all over it, so now I’m screaming my head off.
Hear Hear..Roald Dahl is the finest writer for children of all time ..imagine a young Sudanese girl living in Abu Dhabi UAE..completely bewitched by Roald Dahl books...as a child I believe have read most of his books..I remember going to my English teacher and asking her..."I searched for "Twits" in the dictionary and still didn't understand its meaning in the title of "The Twits" :) ..(this was pre-Google times..when we all had an Oxford dictionary physically in our school bags ;) ) My teacher creatively asked me to reread the book and try to understand it my self...if I loved English for a reason it was for the elements of surprise..laughter..shock(The Witches was a bit creepy...;))and fun in Dahl's books... but I felt Roald Dahl's love for all children via his books and sensed he understood me as a child ...and I loved him for it..I believe his secret was in the way he wrote to children in their spirit and from children's perspective...his work is his legacy..and he had a strong electric personality...intelligent...witty and brave...and respect for all the joy he brought and still brings to children all over the world..one day I'll have my children (hopefully) read his books...

Something the great man doesn't mention out of modesty is he was a Spitfire pilot in Ww2, thanks to him and the others of the few he wrote his books in English instead of German.

He speaks exactly how I read his stories. They aren't supposed to be read quickly. Read it like a kind, interesting narration.
This man is the one behind the inspiration of countless children, but not only children. People of all ages. He created an outlet for us to exhibit creativity and immerse ourselves in breathtaking adventures! He gave us dreams and goals. My respects go out to Roald Dahl!
