My House in the Middle of My Street - a visual poem (not for children).
Переглядів 7225 років тому
This is a visual poem about the house I was born in and, due to the passing of my mum and dad, have recently had to let go. As a rule, I am a writer for children, but there is a swear word in the poem and I would suggest it is not suitable for children. Parents, please be aware of this. Music courtesy of www.bensound.com
JK Rowling's first TV appearance in 1997

A short clip from the BBC of JK Rowling first TV appearance. She is still working on the third Harry Potter book. It's interesting to see such an iconic figure so early in her literary career. Toward the end of the clip, she offers some excellent advice to young writers everywhere. I do not own the copyright to this clip.

Can we say something about "changes" to his books? "FAT" is NOT a bad word! It's happens to the best of us, you'll see. Especially as you get older. "Enormous?" Yeah, someone's going to get it for that one. "Fat" is descriptive. It's not bad. It's mostly a problem when people just assume you're stupid, weak or lazy, too. Fat is ok!
😊
just a second.....were they original bacon's on the wall?
This comment is dedicated to those that found this after watching Wes Anderson's The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. Beautiful tribute, Wes.
Lap…
What a wonderful little documentary. It's so fascinating to find out where and how famous writers write their stories. Some people claim Dah had OCD: "British neurologist Andrew Larner, also suggests that Dahl later exhibited what may have been symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder. “[F]or example,” notes Larner, “when writing in his famous shed, he had to have a particular type of paper (yellow American Legal), and both a particular brand and a specific number (6) of pencils.”" A lot of writers (including me) have favourite things, places and rituals when writing, so for me, his ritual was not really connected to OCD.
This man wrote most of my favorite childhood books. I would read them over and over till the pages would tear. and at the age of 22 this is the first time I'm seeing his face. I'm crying. I'm so thankful for all he's done, for coloring my childhood days with beauty and mystery and excitement..I'm forever thankful..i love and respect him so much❤
Too bad he was an anti-Semite and held despicably racist beliefs.
It's nice to see the great man at work, he's in a place where he feels comfortable. I like the way he speaks and thinks and the fact he doesn't hold back and says what is true and what we all think but can't say. Like his views on the Jewish
His hate has no place in a modern society.
Looking forward to this!
Some say that the true experts don't need to prepare themselves, or muster up any kind of energy/inspiration before doing their craft, but I disagree and this video only credits my disbelief in that sentiment. Roald seems to take a great deal of meticulousness in his preparation before writing.
love the books, favourite book series of all time and they are so well written
Thank you ❤x
When this series is done, will you make a set and/or hardcovers? I love those?
I did know then but my class met Roald Dahl in the 70s, he cam school in London.
Where's his electric heater?
Hey your using Mark Felton,s theme song.
It's a copyright free sample from Garage band. Anyone can use it... and do. :)
@@tellingtaleswithcarlashmor1676 Oh I'm not complaining, I think it's awesome. Thanks so much for sharing this story. Gardening is over. Winter is coming. My old eyes are bad and I need stories.
This is a very good story
He speaks exactly how I read his stories. They aren't supposed to be read quickly. Read it like a kind, interesting narration.
looks just like the scene they recreated on Netflix by Wes Anderson
Roald's voice and quiet sense of humour gives me a sense of quietude. I really love seeing him sitting in his armchair and peacefully writing in his quiet little hut. He must have been very well organised with a good writing schedule.
His books are the best ❤I read them even though I’m nearly 40
6:22
I still read fantastic Mr fox
Unbelievable that he is 66 years old at the time of this interview. You'd think he was 86.
Back in those days people looked older. Like in the 80s, people in their 40s looked older then how people in their 40s look today
I've just read "Boy". What an excellent book. I am 46.
I really enjoyed this, thank you.
British version of Dr Seuss
I just read "Boy" and "Going Solo" for the first time. Great books... I had no idea that he flew Hurricanes in WWII and saw such intense aerial combat. And he found peace after that. He did SO much in his life, it's amazing.
What will the Hydra be???
Gotta love Edgar!!!! Great device! Hercules!!!! And of course Percy!!!!!
It baffles me that there are no comments! Its a wonderful tale!
I am enjoying it very much! Interesting characters!!!! I'm an old kid myself...this kind of story is not my usual fare... And i prefer reading. Great for the end of my day!!!!
Genius! Genius! Genius! Thank you for everything!
To all the Twitterati coming to this video, you're childish and your anger is it's own punishment. Enjoy!
Rip Roald 1990
Beautiful man. I feel so sad your family and publisher have sold you out for progressivism and a little bit of money.
Greatest writer rip
What a very creative human being ❤ in this interview he talks from the heart ❤ greatly missed.
At 2:46 Roald Dahl says: "You see when you're old enough and experienced enough to be a competent writer and you're ready to write a book for children - *because a young person can't do it* - by then you're usually, you become pompous..." Roald Dahl wrote The Gremlins, his first book, when he was 27, with about one year of experience at writing (check "Lucky Break", where he tells how he became a writer). I don't get it. I love him, but I can't understand how he makes this assertion. He was both young and inexperienced. Odd. And it seems the quote at the end is of one Hilaire Belloc, and not Oscar Wilde. I must sadly say that I think a bit less of Roald Dahl after this interview.
Thanks for posting.
That hut, if it still exists, should be a listed building :)
Roald Dahl was born on September 13th, 1916. If he was 66 in this documentary, which took place in the summer - it was probably filmed in the summer of 1982.
Actually, he would have been 65 that summer. He turned 66 in September.
Roald never knew it at the time, but he was the founder of the modern man cave, that set millions of men the world over free!
What an interesting, charming man he was.
And yet even as an adult, I’ve read various books multiple times as have many acquaintances of mine who are readers as well. We are all children at heart I suppose.
Legend
That man could have passed for Peter O'Toole's brother for sure
My top three favourite Roald Dahl books are Fantastic Mr Fox, Matilda and the BFG. I also recently met the actress who played Matilda (Mara Wilson) in the 1996 film at a Comic Convention
Oh really??
@@gustyko8668 yes it was at a convention in Edinburgh. She also appeared at a convention in Liverpool a month later
@@gftyhify that is so cool!!
@@gustyko8668 of all the celebs that were at the con she was the one I wanted to meet the most and she said she was flattered to hear that when I told her. I asked her if she had anything in common with Matilda. She said she loves to read but can’t multiply large sums without a calculator. I also told her Matilda was one of my favourite films growing up and still is and also that i loved Roald Dahl in general
@@gftyhify that all so wholesome!
Nice.Hello from Moscow.Subscribed.
Up there with the greatest writers ever. Tolkien Dickens Wells Burroughs Lewis Carroll Doyle etc
Like many others, I am a life long and huge admirer of Roahl Dahl and grew up reading and re-reading many times his works, but (as now a father myself). I was crestfallen to read that his own daughter, Tessa, accused him of being a selfish father. She once said: "Daddy gave joy to millions of children. But I was dying inside."
Such things happen. Enid Blyton's daughter Imogen said sth very similar of her mother. Just because a person is a great writer, doesn't mean they are a great parent. There are many other examples. One other is A.A. Milne.
My favs - fantastic Mr 🦊 James and the giant 🍑 Charlie and the 🍫 factory The boy BFG Matilda
