Two points about this HORSE series: One: what if these players had had to play "one on one"? Who could have come close to Pete? Two: Maravich was told to "take it easy and keep it close" by network television. True
Very interesting Charles, in other words Maravich wasn't pulling all of the trick shots that he had up his sleeve during this tournament otherwise it wouldn't even have blown away the competition.
Pistol Pete was so much fun to watch. Be it in a game of horse or a regular game of 5 on 5. I'm currently reading a book on Pete called Pistol by Mark Kriegel. Great book on a GREAT player.
Who is Bubbles Hawkins? Seems unfair, some unknown guy against the Pistol. Maybe he was good back then. Too bad no Randy Smith, Tiny Archibald, Earl Monroe, Jerry West, Walt Frazier, Slick Watts, JoJo White, or Charlie Scott. It would have been great to see Ernie D in there. What does "...players selected on basis of free shooting" mean? At least Ice Man was in there. They should have put all name brand players in there for more audience. Pistol was taking it easy on this guy.
In three different videos now I have seen Maravich do a simple scoop shot from five feet away from the basket. The amazing thing is all 3 players couldn't make that shot!
Maravich was the truth, the best ball handler and trick shot artist of all time. Maravich made a career of breaking ankles. He made it all look so easy. Rip Pistol.
There will never be a player like Pete again no one has the fanatical dedication that he displayed it was like the whole globetrotter team melted down and put into this white guy. No one who ever played the game could stop him. I harassed my dad to take us to baton rouge to see him play from my hometown in Texas about 275 miles and the things I saw still blow my mind 50 years later. Dale Brown the LSU coach later on after Pete marked where every shot he took if there was a 3 point line and Pete would have averaged 57 points a game for 3 years!! I defy any one to even do that against a bad high school team and if you were a good college player cant be done. A true phenomenon.
Pistol's the best HORSE player of all time. Guy could do so many trick shots it was SCARY! If you watch the entire HORSE competition from that year it looks as if Pete's beating his opponents without even trying. Incredible!
He does those same shots because the onject is to win these games of horse and his opponents can't shoot them as well as he. But he can shoot as well as whatever his opponents tried. Maybe they should have practiced something other than your regular shots.
If pete is still the scoring champion this was in 77 or 78. He took it from bob macado. But boy, He wasn't hot here, but 'Bubbles' was really cool in his day, real cool.
These guys would probably get arrested for indecent exposure today wearing those shorts in an NBA game. I'm still waiting for an NBA player to step on his shorts as he runs down the court!
Don't you hate it when they're giving out nicknames and you get bubbles?

Pete was definitely holding back, not showing his full bag of tricks.
I grew up a huge tigers/jazz fan and the legend of pistol Pete still lives on
Maybe Kyrie with his arsenal of layups & dribble moves could've gave Pete a run for his money. I'm still taking PISTOL!
The humility at the end by Mr. Pete was soooo great and sincere . Wow... You never see that anymore
True, he was finally at peace, What a great guy, an all time favorite!
While being the leading scorer as well such humility
2:16 - is this event being held outside?
Hawkins was a journyman who played for afew teams.I remember watching him play but i dont recall him ever being a starting player for very long.

i love those nets uniforms
Wasn't his first name Connie ?
(referring to Mr..Hawkins)
@janisporuks yes he was. back then i would call him the magician. too bad he never won an NBA championship. died too early. still miss him.
Bubbles never had a chance
Pistol Pete
May rest in peace for these two
0:15 - "RECORDED EARLIER"
No really?
Dannyboyz This was said on the TV to show that it was not live

2:38 ...after Pistol said this is definitely became my Idol
I'm not one of the props... 😂
I'm not a prop!!!

Because nobody practices that
Bubbles "Robert" Hawkins was later found murdered in a crackhouse, age 39
But for 3-1/2 magical months in late 1976/early 1977, he was unstoppable on the court.
His murder was never solved.

Is it just me or does bubbles sound just like Cleveland Brown, hahaha
Bubbles was shot to death.
He sounds like Marvin the martian
Pete: “if I had to shoot regular shots on you, no way”
I had never heard of Bubbles Hawkins, Connie, yes.
Why don't they do horse now. I'd watch that on all star weekend. That would be the best thing they have!

@dennythedentist
Yea, he was to death. I'll email, you the link. It took me a while to find it. His real name is Robert.
I researched this, but cannot find if anyone ever beat pete maravich at '' horse '' ? Anyone know ?
lol everyone else is just doing boring jumpshots at least he mixes it up
where is this court?
Sorry to hear of the passing of hawkins.
@dennythedentist
shot
Bubbles was the truth just the bad brakes in life. Tremendous Player.
Yeah, particularly those bad men who made him do crack?
bubbles is dead :(
These guys would probably get arrested for indecent exposure today wearing those shorts in an NBA game. I'm still waiting for an NBA player to step on his shorts as he runs down the court!
pistol has got every game the same tricks. it is so boring and he cant make a shot outside
Ousvec Well there was no Such thing as a 3 point line back then nor was it thought of
Why doesn't bubbles throw down some reverse dunks? Wtf why is he resorting to jumpers and not some creativeness
