I grew up in rural Fl. during the time he was in college and my Dad and me used to listen to the LSU games on the radio whenever we could get them...seemed like every game Pistol Pete would drop 45 on somebody. He was quite the hoops phenom in the SEC ....the kid with the floppy socks.
Maravich- greatest college player ever. A scoring machine. He'd have averaged almost 60 points per game for LSU if they would have had the 3-point line back then. The greats from that era, like Maravich, and McAdoo would have done well in this era today because they would have access to the training, video and nutrition that they use today. The greats can play in any era.

I have a little true-life story that may amuse: It was my first day in 8th grade and my first class was “Gym” and we were all lined up around the basketball court waiting for the new “Gym” teacher who was just starting that year. Finally, a 30-ish man with a buzz cut dressed in chinos, gray “Navy” t-shirt and, if memory serves, Joe Lapchick high-tops came onto the floor with a solemn-faced little boy of four, maybe five years in tow. After he introduced himself, he told us our first class was to run laps, which we did and while we trudged our circuits, our teacher proceeded to demonstrate to the lad how to dribble, cut, fake, and shoot and then issued stern commands and corrections as the tyke tried to duplicate his moves. The year was 1952 and the court was Aliquippa High School. The teacher was Press Maravich and the little boy has always held a special place in my heart and I feel so privileged to have witnessed the first day the legendary never-to-be-equalled “Pistol Pete” Maravich set foot on a basketball court. RIP, little lad, you were one of a kind.
It is SUCH a shame that MAC, does not get an ounce of credit as he was one of the BEST PURE SHOOTERS ever to play the game. Plus he looked so smooth doing it with those two laces flopping all over as he glided through the air. he also happens to be one of the nicest guys! His son played high school tennis many years ago and i coached the boy he was playing agains and Mac and i were the only ones there..I spoke to him for well over an hour - just one on one...and what an absolutely super nice, humble guy!
I remember watching this as a kid. Later that day I worked on the flip-over-the-back and layup shot. Got it down real well and used it for years playing Horse with my buddies. The round-the-back-between-legs layup took a lot more effort to get right and even then it was always a mother to pull off right or at all. Tough move, but Pete made it look so fluid.

I used to watch these guys when i was a kid - remember Mcadoo with the Buffalo Braves and Pistol with the Jazz- who i used to go see. Pete was my favorite player as a kid, to me he will always be the best.

Andrew Bynum : Have a player drive for a layup basked and undercut him so he falls on his head first or neck back area. Thought Maravich was taking advantage until his last shot. He finished with a jumper and not one of his tricks that only he could do. That was classy and fair.

I work as a caddie at a top 100 in America golf course. One of our members went to basketball camp with "pistol pete". He says it was the greatest experience of his life.
The Pistol had supreme confidence in his ability. It was never in doubt. I practiced that throw over my shoulder and reverse layup until I mastered it after watching this back in the 70's? The Pistol was like Bird in a guard's body. To me, the Pistol was the best player to come out of the 70's. Better than, Gervin, Chenier, Clyde, Monroe, West, etc. I used to watch him play and at halftime go outside and practice his moves. I still remember those H-O-R-S-E games and mini coaching clinics at halftime. Great times! Still remember that the NBA had a drug/ cocaine problem back then too.
Pete's dad Press was an assistant coach at NC State. He would drive down streets with his car door open while Pete dribbled a ball. Pete really worked on ball handling skills

Pistol was college basketball's first ever "point a minute" player; scoring more points than minutes played while at LSU. His legendary shootout vs Dan Issell of Kentucky on national TV was incredible.
To me, a competition like this is so much more interesting than a slam dunk contest. All of the dunks of today have been done over and over again already. Just my opinion.
Pete’s been gone for along time. Sad life, and died at 40. Never reached his promise in the NBA. But I think he remains the greatest collegiate player of all time. And he was influential-gets huge respect from a lot of NBA greats who came after him.

Comments are funny. Yes, today's players with the benefit of video to teach you, and advanced training techniques out there, have an insane amount of skill compared to players from that era. Long range shooting is far superior now compared to back then, while Pistol Pete could handle the ball as good as anybody does today, ball handling overall is far superior too in this era. The game is faster, the players are more athletic.. It's all true. But, they were incredible for the time frame they played in, and that is how they should be judged. In return for that courtesy, the old players from yesteryear need to stop saying how today's players wouldn't have survived in their era.. They would have thrived.

Now if you play a skill slot and can't shoot that 3, you are suspect. The players from the 80's wouldn't understand how to defend a player who can nail 3's, nail mid range, and take it to the basket. the game was more fun back in the day because teams and players hated each other. Today it's like a gentleman's club where nobody wants to cross that line. skill wise, players from them would get demolished. do your research. I watched all the ball in the 80's.

You are wrong if you think Maravich isn't better than any Player today in terms of Passing and dribbling. In the limited videos available you will see Maravich throw passes that today's players still can't throw. and if one watches his college highlight films or ultimate highlights, Pete was as fast as anyone with the ball that I've ever seen. In the book Maravich. James Brown, the sportscaster, relates how he tried out for the Atlanta Hawks when Pete was there. Brown said that they would do suicide drills the full length of the court while dribbling a ball.and states that Pete would dribble two balls while doing the drill and still beat almost everyone.
Marovich was a flashy passer, but he wasn't a good passer. He was an absolute turnover machine. I can name 20 passers off the top of my head that I would take before Pete. As for his handles, I would agree that he's one of the GOAT. Allen Iverson is the only player that I might put ahead of him, but Curry and Irving aren't far behind.

I work as a caddie at a top 100 in America golf course. One of our members went to basketball camp with "pistol pete". He says it was the greatest experience of his life.
The Pistol had supreme confidence in his ability. It was never in doubt. I practiced that throw over my shoulder and reverse layup until I mastered it after watching this back in the 70's? The Pistol was like Bird in a guard's body. To me, the Pistol was the best player to come out of the 70's. Better than, Gervin, Chenier, Clyde, Monroe, West, etc. I used to watch him play and at halftime go outside and practice his moves. I still remember those H-O-R-S-E games and mini coaching clinics at halftime. Great times! Still remember that the NBA had a drug/ cocaine problem back then too.
Pete's dad Press was an assistant coach at NC State. He would drive down streets with his car door open while Pete dribbled a ball. Pete really worked on ball handling skills

Did y’all know that in college, if you take all of Pete’s shot locations and added the 3pt line, that he would AVERAGE, 14 3pt made per game. Which is insane. Bob McAdoo is a great as well, very underrated in my opinion. Had 50 points in a playoff game in 75’. Very soft jumpshot touch for a big guy
I'm 62 and remember these Saturday afternoons distinctly. If I'm not mistaking I believe their was one on one games with various players as well.

Bob Mcadoo is so underrated. Rookie of the year, scoring champion, mvp, and 6th man of the year with the Lakers. He destroyed the taller centres for his size.

These friendly H-O-R-S-E competitions back in the day made basketball fun to watch for their fans. TNT Studios with Shaq and company can probably do this today if they wanted to. I admired Pistol Pete and Bob McAdoo. Great basketball legends!
Pistol was college basketball's first ever "point a minute" player; scoring more points than minutes played while at LSU. His legendary shootout vs Dan Issell of Kentucky on national TV was incredible.
I won $100 on the Pistol that night … but I'm still waiting for the payoff!

Pete’s been gone for along time. Sad life, and died at 40. Never reached his promise in the NBA. But I think he remains the greatest collegiate player of all time. And he was influential-gets huge respect from a lot of NBA greats who came after him.

Can remember when Bob played for the Buffalo Braves. Scored from anywhere within 25 feet and the announcer would always intone 'that's two, for McAdoo'. Glad he got a ring with the Lakers.

Comments are funny. Yes, today's players with the benefit of video to teach you, and advanced training techniques out there, have an insane amount of skill compared to players from that era. Long range shooting is far superior now compared to back then, while Pistol Pete could handle the ball as good as anybody does today, ball handling overall is far superior too in this era. The game is faster, the players are more athletic.. It's all true. But, they were incredible for the time frame they played in, and that is how they should be judged. In return for that courtesy, the old players from yesteryear need to stop saying how today's players wouldn't have survived in their era.. They would have thrived.
Today's players don't even have the fundamental skills of the old school! I'm tired of hearing about today's shooters it's boring to SEE! The old era would strive on today's jump shooters they would collect a lot of rebounds and run all over today's players. You see LeBron turnover after turnover on the fastbreak! And they say he the best talk about the media in over hyping today's players. I much rather see 80s nba or today's wnba that's the truth! Do your research
+Lorenzo Pablo Samaniego I've done my research. players back then weren't locking themselves in a gym for 5 hours to get insane handles and 3 point range. a 3 point shooter was a novelty in the 80's, a specialist. Now if you play a skill slot and can't shoot that 3, you are suspect. The players from the 80's wouldn't understand how to defend a player who can nail 3's, nail mid range, and take it to the basket. the game was more fun back in the day because teams and players hated each other. Today it's like a gentleman's club where nobody wants to cross that line. skill wise, players from them would get demolished. do your research. I watched all the ball in the 80's.

Check out "crazy shots Pete Maravich" on youtube and you will see what Pete could really do in Horse. You are wrong if you think Maravich isn't better than any Player today in terms of Passing and dribbling. In the limited videos available you will see Maravich throw passes that today's players still can't throw. and if one watches his college highlight films or ultimate highlights, Pete was as fast as anyone with the ball that I've ever seen. In the book Maravich. James Brown, the sportscaster, relates how he tried out for the Atlanta Hawks when Pete was there. Brown said that they would do suicide drills the full length of the court while dribbling a ball.and states that Pete would dribble two balls while doing the drill and still beat almost everyone.
And he could shoot from way way out as well as anyone who ever played could.

Marovich was a flashy passer, but he wasn't a good passer. He was an absolute turnover machine. I can name 20 passers off the top of my head that I would take before Pete. As for his handles, I would agree that he's one of the GOAT. Allen Iverson is the only player that I might put ahead of him, but Curry and Irving aren't far behind.
