- How to build a shipping crate. This topic seems easier than it is. At least until you build your first one. This method I've pieced together from other guys and my own experiences. After you invest a little over four minutes into this video, you'll be able to know our a custom crate in just an hour or two for around $20-60, depending on how big your project is.

As someone who opens tonne of cabinet/millwork crates, I always appreciate a a mark showing where the screws are.
That’s a good point. The hidden screws are the worst.
Circle each screw with a sharpie.

After watching a bunch of crate-building videos, I settled on your approach ... with a few minor variations. This being my first crate - for my first piece of museum cabinetry - I erred on the side of ruggedness. The LTL driver picking up the crate commented on how well-made it was. Thanks Cam.
Cam, instead of the bubble, use a couple layers of .5mil high-density poly sheeting drop cloth (I get it at Home Depot). Bubblewrap can leave a bubble pattern on your work, especially if the finish isn’t 100% cured. The high-dense poly is inert and very slippery; by using 2 or more layers you are creating a slip-zone between the poly layers. Any vibration, flexing, movement, etc will be between these layers and will not be transferred to your furniture. There is a whole science to crating (crating fine-art for a living is part of my job) I’m happy to dive more into it with you if you like. I can also recommend some much better shipping methods you may not be aware of instead of sending things via freight.

Everything down to the shipping container & material could mean the difference between a one time purchase & a valued life-long customer. Whether it's furniture, art, or something in between. Love this. Would recommend cutting out some notches in the 2x4s for the forks; that way they lift from the 2x4 not from the bottom of your table.

How does the shipping process work? Does the shipper pickup or do you take it to a depot?
Cam what is the typical out of pocket for a dining table you ship to say East coast US? Do you include that in your estimate? Or is that something you add later?

This went with a larger table too. But would be around $400 or so alone

Thanks for this video. Very helpful. I saw in the comments you mentioned shipping methods but couldn't find a video on the subject. I have a large waterfall coffee table (80" long, 40" wide' 24" high and 350 pounds). FedEx Freight just quoted me $4,300 from Maryland to Florida. There has to be a more economical way to get it to my first client! Any ideas?
I did just find your blog post where you recommended FreightQuote. When I get a quote from them the quote is $640 but them FedEx quotes $4,300. I wonder what I am doing wrong? I reached out to Liza at the email you provided in your blog post. I am at a point where I may have to drive this table 15 hours to Florida. I don't want to lose my first client.
As a truck driver, its not the trucking part that damages things, its the idiots on either end with the forklifts .

Do you have a go to freight company you prefer?
I need to make a crate to ship the seats of my 1931 Model A Ford to the upholstery company. The front seats are bucket seat where back folds down. The rear seat is two piece bench seat with back and bottom being separate. Going is one thing but crate will be reused to return recovered leather seats so do not want rubbing damage, etc. Any suggestions appreciated.

Freightquote is where I normally go. Usually goes super well.
That is actually freight broker, not a carrier.
Anything less than truck load or LTL freight is usually handled by companies like Old Dominion who advertises a lot on TV.

Hey Cam, I've watched a ton of your videos and love the channel! I'm just getting started and was wondering how I'd ship a smaller round table top (30in)? A crate seems like overkill.
Who do you ship through and where do you get your shipping quotes from? Do you get LTL quotes? Do you ever ship over seas? How you do get competitive quotes?

Gotcha..... but do you use a secondary company to purchase more insurance to cover losses if something happens? I know the actual shipping company only covers so much.

Good for you for the 6k. Curious if you would be willing to make a video about how you price your stuff and how you attract or find clientele. I understand your reputation drives your price up but I have a hard time selling a 6k dinning table. But I’m on a dif level than you are. Thanks for making the videos.
I totally would. I don’t keep much a secret. But there isn’t a lot of science to my method. I give pretty high quotes. Sometimes materials run really high, sometimes they don’t. Either way I dont charge the client extra. So some tables I do really well, others not as much. I also budget A LOT of time with the clients. Where a normal shop couldn’t spend that much one on one time as I do. So not apples to apples with everyone else.

I feel a little stuck at that point of my journey and just looking for people w experience and willing to share that. Calling this trucker proof is an invitation for disaster. There is nothing trucker or forklift driver proof. They will find a way.
If you put the insured dollar value on the side, it might be safer though, since everyone knows the stakes.

And it would reflect light onto the table top and show up more of the beautiful finishes? Maybe you tried that already....
