  • In this video we look at how we undertake samples for a listed building. Applications to the council for listed building consent will result in the consent having conditions applied. These conditions can vary. However, if the work on the listed building involves replacement for pointing mortar or stone, samples will have to be undertaken. The samples must be correct to ensure the conservation officer signs of on the listed building conditions.
We look in this video how we ‪@UKRestorationServices‬ undertake samples to satisfy conditions.
We have colour samples of lime mortar produced in a sample board. The lime mortar samples are made up from analyse of the existing mortar. On this project we had to product two types of mortar. 1. A black ash lime mortar to be used on the iron stone 2. A buff mortar to be used on the Limestone.
The stone samples were of a local limestone and an ironstone. The ironstone is no longer mined locally. this had to be sourced from a supplier near Oxford.

Astounding amount of work carried out in the background before the heavy lifting begins. It is absolutely essential to have a good relationship with the Historical/ Conservation Officers. I live in a listed house and know exactly how this relationship works. Things that you thought might be a massive problem (or impossible) can be achieved if you talk.If either party sets out with bad attitude, the project is pretty much a total nightmare right from the get go. Good to know that that particular piece of history is in your safe hands.

Totally agree. We speak to many frustrated people who expect the conservation officers to tell them everything they need to do. However it's the applicants duty to find the information and professionals needed. If you have the right team behind you Conservation officers are very accommodating.

Great video, thank you. Can I ask why you aren't using a hot lime mortar?

Thank you for the positive comment. The samples in the video were to determine mainly colour. Now we have approval on colour, we are adjusting the mixes.
