  • Phil visits one of ‎@UKRestorationServices sites at Clitheroe Castle in Lancashire. During this restoration projects the team is installing structural propping to the castle walls. The structural engineer has designed a structural propping design to prevent the possibility of masonry collapse.
The team uses acro props to stabilize the stone masonry walls. These steel props support the masonry and are tensioned using a screw system. Scaffolding tubes are used to link the masonry props together to add additional support. Special scaffolding clips are used for the props.
Oak blocks, beams, and wedges are used to prevent the props from damaging the masonry. We also used these Oak timbers as wedges to support the uneven masonry. The Oak is very dense and out lasts a softwood. This is why we use it for structural propping.
We support the masonry on a large opening in the Castle Wall. We also supported some low level masonry.

How did you get into this sort of work. I’m a plasterer. Been doing Venetian plastering and microcement solely for the last 6 years. But always had a passion for working on old building.

Must be difficult pricing these jobs. Im guessing some sharp sand and NHL for the packing mix?

We had the structural engineer's design to work from for pricing.
The packing mortar was 1:1:6. This was only used to fill between the timbers and masonry. We needed a mortar with greater compressive than an NHL.

Well thanks to you, Clitheroe is now definitely on the itinerary for my upcoming tour of the UK. I bet it is stunning when the sun shines - if the rain ever stops this year! I never would have thought abot going there without seeing this. I vaguely remember "The Clitheroe Kid" on the radio from my childhood and wondered what the name was all about. Nice one.

I would definitely recommend a visit there. Stunning views for the top. Fantastic little town as well.
