This is my take on the new BOSS WAZA Tube Amp Expander. If you're into tube amps, recording, jamming, cabinet and effects flexibility, and maintaining cordial relationships with your household and neighbours, you'll probably want one of these. The Tube Amp Expander can tame even the mightiest of tube amps (and turn the little ones into monsters!) The feature set is long and you would do well to visit the Boss website for further info. However, I will say with some confidence that the Waza Tube Amp Expander is the best Reactive Load device at any price on the market today. I want to keep this one but they won't let me! Haha. I have to wait like everyone else... Thanks for watching.
Today's tools:
Guitar: 2009 Ernie Ball Music Man Axis

Cables: Various
Power Supply: Eventide PowerMax
Mic: Samson Airline77 (me)
Camera: Canon 60D (me) and Nikon D5100 (TAE and Marshall SV20H)

One of the best demos I've seen of any product anywhere. Everything you need to know and no fluff.
Excellent bridge between old tube stuff and modern technology.
Been waiting for this video. Looks like BOSS have hit it out of the park with this one.
Just bought a second one of these, it absolutely demolishes the Ox.
Fantastic playing + tone and your enthusiasm speaks volumes at the calibre of the product!
I can't believe the tech we're getting these days... truly amazing.
right?? i remember when digitech was the top dog with its crappy GNX line of multi-effects processors... line 6 still seems to be in the game though.
Exactly it’s great time to be a guitar player lots of great tech to play and create music for less cost.
What an outstanding tone! Congratulations, it is very impressive!
Fryette Power Station & UAD Audio Ox got together and had a monster baby! Boss basically looked at all the attenuation features across all brands and brought everything into one Swiss Army knife attenuator/100watt amp/IR loader/DSP effects & switchable impedance curve which is unique to the Boss Amp Expander. Great job Boss!!! 👍👍👍
Plus now any amp has an effects loop...
pastorkev777 ah yes, something that only seemed to feature on the Fryette Power Station. Boss have brought out some great stuff (Katana amps & Ms-3 multi effect looper switcher) but still I would choose tube amps and traditional pedal boards more out of habit than resistance to new stuff.
But this Waza Tube Amp Expander seems like it has no rival. Most expensive by €130 above the Ox but definitely worth it. This paired with some nice pre-amp pedals and you could ditch the bulky amps if so desired!
It blows both of them away and Ive got an Ox. Adios!
I've been waiting for this product for, let me see, 20 years. Now I can finally play my Speedster at home without getting either divorced or evicted. Great review!
I was recently roaming the mean streets of Bend, Oregon when a bearded young man wearing tight fitting trousers approached me and said “BRAH! HAVE YOU HEARD THE WAZA EXPANDER? IT’S ALL YOU NEED BRAH!” I was taken aback tightness of his trousers and his excitement so I took a step back before replying with “Little man, I have no idea what the hell you are talking about but thank you for your passion.” then went about with my day.
Well, that was a lovely story... and you tell it so *well*
Brett, I don't really understand it all. I'll watch this a couple of times I think. But truly, it's amazing! Anything that makes a Plexi usable for today's player, has to be a winner.
Jeremy, thanks for watching. I'll make it easy for you: it takes the roaring tone of any given tube amp and makes it more manageable to listen to in quiet or recording environments. Additionally, it adds beautiful effects and an effects loop where there may not have been one. You can listen to your amp through a ton of different 'virtual' speaker cabinets and basically just enjoy your amp a whole lot more without freaking out the household, your ears, or those of the neighbours. That's about 20 wins. :D
@@BrettKingman Thanks for the reply. Great content, as always. Its an excellent unit, not for hobbist clearly. But its amazing what is out there now. So many paths to great tone.
Holy smokes this thing is, well BOSS!! Imagine the possibilities...you could hook a Champ up to this thing and have it sound like it’s hooked up to a 4x12 (assuming it has a speaker out jack) along with reverb and delay. Or use the power amp and ACTUALLY run it through a 4x12!! Well done BOSS and you too, Brett!!
Brett, You do very nice demos and reviews. Thank You. Meat and potatoes Baby. Oh, and yes I have got to get one of these. Have pretty much everything else a boy could want. This however is a solution for home, studio, practice, and yes......those wonderful neighbors.
Not so obvious in the midst of so many useful features - but fully linear speaker volume output, multiple impedance switch, and built in Fletcher Munson Curve for the WIN!
Great review as always! This thing is truly the Swiss Army knife big-daddy of them all! Price might seem high to some but given it has a built-in 100W amp AND all that other functionality is astonishing. The fact that it has footswitch control function for your existing amp is mind blowing. Some really clever minds came together to create this beastie! Unlike some gizmos I've seen demo'd for once I 'get it' right off the bat! I could see even a garage band with two guitar players ending the 'loudness' battle by each using these and running guitars to FOH and letting the mixing board rule the volume war. Tons of possibilities!! I think I'm going to have to get a mayonnaise jar to start saving for this! (Old school savings plan) Cheers and hope you're well!
Man, this looks and sounds really awesome. And how they cram 6 foot-switch commands (AND POWER) down a single TRS cable! Genius.
Sooo much reverb! It feels like the 80's :-)
Is that a bad thing? 😜
@@shanemaderejr.7675 never hahah
the best demo brett makes everything clear some you watch you dont learn much
Saved up and bought this to use with my new 150 watt Bogner Uberschall Twinjet amp so that I can drive it to saturate better tones.
Great, swift but effective overview. This thing is incredible. I’d like to have this and a UA OX to compare the tone.
Beautiful demonstration. Everything is perfect.
Your explanation and examples were exactly what I needed! Cheers Brett,
Andy
Great stuff, Andy. Thanks for the encouraging words. I hope all is well for you.
I got the chance of trying one with my Two-Rock Studio Signature dialed in at the sweet spot, through a 2x12 cab today. It's an amazing product. I ordered one on the spot. Can't wait for it to arrive.
The reactive loads are amazing. The feeling is amazing, the tone isn't changed, everything feels super dynamic. Yes, it's expensive, but all the things you can do with it, is mind blowing.
The built in effects are really really good, and the beauty of the effects is that it's after the amp! It gives the amp all the room to be itself and isn't affected by impedance or capacitance changes.
This thing deserves the name Tube Amp Expander.
And I didn't even try the line out, the effects loop, the IR's you can load in, or the headphone option. It's vastly superior to anything in this gear segment (yes, also the OX from Universal Audio).
Boss has knocked this out off the park. This is coming from somebody who doesn't like Boss pedals at all, I don't even own a boss pedal.
colaboytje
Hello Colaboytje I have a question for you... i tried a TAE today with my Two rock Classic Reverb and I don’t know why but my clean sound wasn’t clean as the ampli without TAE!!!!
I run my Two Rock at noon for gain and Volume and with TAE my sound is always muddy and distorted much more than the real at real volume!!!
Did you notice something similar or do you think my TAE have a problem.
I tried many combination of loading but the clean sound is always much more distorted than the real sound.
Which combination of loading do you prefer or use with two Rock? I have the 2x12 and the 1x12.
Thanks for the replay
P.s sorry for my English I’m from italy😜
@@libertystudios69 Yes, it does seem to distort a bit sooner. But not muddy at all in my case. Actually, it seems to be more open.
I use high-mid + high-mid for my 2x12 Two-Rock cabinet with Celestion Cream Alnico speakers (best speakers I've ever played through). I don't understand why it sounds muddy with your amp.
I have 2 Two-Rock amps: Traditional Clean and the new Studio Signature.
Make sure you have the output wattage on the TAE on 100 watt. The Studio Signature is only 35 watts, but it clips the input stage of the TAE on 50 watts.
You could turn the gain down on the amp a bit, and set the speaker volume on the TAE a bit higher.
Also, use the editor that you can download from the Boss website, so you can set the EQ just like you want it. It works great.
I still don't understand why it's muddy with your amp though.
This thing is so cool… It looks really big
Pro controller for live, rec, and damn powerful at 100W . Boss is good. ✌️ Saw a pic of this on Instagram. Love your reviews Brett. Thank you man! 🙏
Dude, I've watched your demo career thing for a number of years and you've went from "wow, this guy is good compared to everybody else" -- to... damn, I gotta make sure we get a Brett Kingman demo on our store's web page... good job!!
Fantastic video!
this thing looks so cool.
The line out/speaker out (8:54) mix tone is what makes it!
Most impressive! Great demo Brett :-)
Great review!
This with a Tiny Terror would be bare bones all you need. Fantastic.
Tiny turkey has no power to attenuate 😂
@@auntjenifer7774 15 watts is enough to kill. Don't believe me? Go lick a circuit value capacitor. (yawn)
Beautiful video mate really covered it all with epic tones to boot - nice work
You again? This thing looks and sounds promising...thanks using that cute Marshall Stack :)
Well I WAS looking at the Two Notes Torpedo Studio....but this comes in slightly cheaper & more immediate workable interface.... Hope you are doing well, Brett...
All good here, thanks Pete. Cheers.
It blows the Two-Note Torpedo out of the water. I own the Torpedo Reload, and while it's a great product, this is something else.
@@colaboytje dude im buying the reload or the waza next week which one should i get and why!? since you own both i'd love your opinion!
@@mariuszsyposz918 I can't decide for you. Personally, I prefer the Boss because of the 16 load curves and the possibility to eq the output to the speakers.
@@colaboytje but do they both attenuate the speaker to a reasonable level?
Great video! I need one! Haha
Nice piece of gear. Of course Brett makes everything sound great. I am going to need a second job for all the great gear coming out.
Sounds awesome.
Hey Burgs, I made a joke the other day about the JVM you demoed as being the perfect bedroom amp. Well it looks like the joke is firmly on me, cause with this thing any amp can be exactly that.... Love your work as always...
Haha. I liked that joke! You're right, though, this machine makes things a ton more manageable. When I get my own (this one's on its way back to its maker) I'll run the big bastards through it and show you what fun can be had. Thanks for watching!
This is BEST review I've seen of the WTAE! Thanks so much! I've been saving up for one so I can run my tube amp heads directly into my DAW. I gig with a Katana Artist, so this would never leave the studio. But for studio use, this will totally rock! But that said, if I want to use any of my tube amp heads in a gig, I can run them right into the board with this little beastie, and just use a monitor to monitor my tone. So cool! Again, thanks for the GREAT review!
Thank you, great review!
*Awesome demo Brett. Great technology Boss.*
Perfect combination🎸
Great review, thanks mate!
That thing is brilliant. Feature-wise, It's like they have thought of and added everything that similar products on the market are currently missing. Well done Boss. I definitely see one of these in my future. Amazing job of demoing as always Brett.
Cheers, Joe! Thanks for watching. And for the record, I very much agree with you.
Great info, great video…thanks!
Great demo. Convinced me to get one. I'm running it into my 1996 Vox AC30. Works great for bedroom attenuation levels. Question: Can you plug in a pair of studio speakers and get a sound out of the line out that i can run alongside the AC30. So effectively two guitar sounds at once that i can mix together?
Tone is one thing, but some of the point here, would be the feel of the reactive load when you play.
No demo on YT, or any other media, can show this unless you play yourself.
The load itself, can't be changed in any other unit, that I'm aware of.
IR's, fx etc: Yes, go nuts.
The Load itself: No
, only TAE can do this (happy to be corrected)
I haven't tried the Boss TAE, so until I try it myself, it's an open game.
Rabea did a video where he shows changing the load selection and talks at length about how it effects the feel. Check it out.
Boss did what OX forgot to do. Glad I waited :)
Has anyone tried the BOSS WAZA Tube Amp Expander with an older tube amp? I have a 1962 Fender Bandmaster that I would like to use it with.
Hell's bells that little Marshall sounds ace Burgs!! It's making my SS Lead15 jealous. Haha!
Brett this is awesome!
Fantastic review, Brother! You're enthusiasm is infectious and you are very articulate ... even at a quickened pace...ha ha. Would you be saying, then, that this Boss Waza attenuator would be your first choice for an attenuator. Today is the first time I'm hearing about this product. For a month I've been researching every type of attenuator out there and narrowed my interest down to two: the Ox amp top box, and the Fryette PS-1OO Power Station... and leaning more towards the latter, because it seems to have the majority of all the features but for $400 less. Do you have any experience and/or thoughts about these two attenuators? Or, would the Boss be your only choice, hands down? I would just like your honest opinion. I'll still choose the right one for me, though. Thanks for posting!
Thanks for this!
I think I need this!
3:26 Wow man. I didn't know you could move your feet that fast. lol
Shocking another awesome UK GUITARIST! LOL
Imagine there are such products from every brands competing in the market...
F**k me pink! This is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G !!! The Roland/Boss stuff gets better and better.
great video. thanks!
You know the world has changed when you can buy a device to turn your Plexi into a Katana.
That would be a slightly funny joke if it was even at all what this did...
@@sixstringsamurai77 no mate - that's funny.
Brilliant response because I agree with your. ;-)
Thats actually some funny shit right because ain't it the truth. Is that what they mean by reverse osmoses ? Yes, we know it's awesome and offers so many solutions that it sells itself but Heph333 scores with a classic.
@@sixstringsamurai77 You may be a six string Samurai, but you are a white belt in mind Karate. That was Friggin' hilarious.
WOW...What a terrific ne gadget...and, it would be so amazing, to play so we'll, such very cool licks like that...KEEEEEP GOIN'...(definitely)...
⚡👍🥴⚡
a power soaker and a power amp and effects processor and cab sim all in one? i wish i didn't spend all my money on a headrush pedalboard now i want this. the joys of chasing tones haha.
I keep seeing this asked.
From boss website:
Q: Can I connect an amp that's not a tube amp (such as a solid-state amp)?
A: Not possible.
Connecting an amplifier whose power amp doesn't use vacuum tubes, such as a solid-state or class-D amp, might result in malfunction of the guitar amp or WAZA Tube Amp Expander.
Just bought the marshall plexi and the waza.....all I have to say about both is they are the absolute shit !! The search for tone has been accomplished.
But would Brett use this live?
I’m wary of guys doing lots of gear reviews.
Van Halen-ish. Marshall cranked up, flanger, Musicman Axis.
🤘
Great review mate boss are making amazing products and love the katana series. The days of the old tube amps are fast coming to an end cause you have to crank them to get any real use out of them and many venues we gig in now days don’t accomodate such high volumes. People seem to dislike digital but the truth is to play digital you have to be a much cleaner better player cause it’s harder to hide behind digital sound if you know what I mean....... same with digital vocal mics and digital P.A systems the sound is so clear vocals have to be spot on those who use digital will know what I am saying, you have to be a better player singer etc it shows with digital, I have been playing and singing professional for well over 30 years... love your Chanel mate and reviews are well done great playing also!!!!!!!
Do you have your TAE patches published anywhere? This is the best sound I’ve heard from this and would love to try what you’ve dialed up.
Boss looks around says...'yea we can make that, but better. Then they do'
Seriously! They innovate new things you didnt know you needed too. This blows everything else like this out of the water.
Cool
This unit costs $1,299.99 and it has a solid state output (but has a ton of effects). The UA OX is the same price now (obviously) and it has a far more complex cab simulation, but less effects (basically reverb). And the Fryette PowerStation PS-2 is full tube and analog and it costs $699.00, and you can plug it to a $299.99 CAB-M and any effects pedals you want or need. It is very interesting to see which one will win in the end :D
The output is a class A/B analogue output at 100 watts. Also, you can design any IR you want (you can use the Audio Universal ones), and load it in the unit. No restrictions.
colaboytje Which one are you talking about? The Boss or the UA one?
@@bernardosilva7306 The Boss
@@bernardosilva7306 If you want, check out Rabeea Massaad's channel. He uses his own IR's with the Boss. He also talks about using the OX and the Boss, and how he is also blown away by the feel of the unit. He uses his own IR's in the Boss.n
colaboytje Cool! Good to know, competition on those units is necessary to bring their prices lower and quality higher :)
I honestly still love the Fryette PS-2 but those new units from UA and Boss are super cool!
Brett - this Boss TAE has a fabulous attenuated tone with not loss of high end at any level. Way better than the Ox Box. But at 1.55 you say you can send the line out to Logic and use cab sims. Does that mean the line out is not the same tone as the speaker out? My Marshall DSL40 has an emulated line out which sounds crap. I still use an SM57 on the speaker to record into Logic. Is it still worth 1000 UK pounds if i can't record with it?
Wow this is great. Maybe I can get a 5150 now and play it at home!
Cancel that..... just googled the price.
They make these , there is a "Market" for these, how does this compare to a variac sound?
I found this hard to understand what it was (feeling like an oap with a smartphone!)
Am I right in saying it’s the next generation of attenuation with digital effects built in, controlled by laptop, no other way to edit?
Next gen of attenuation: correct. Editing to some degree from the front face (on/off and reverb up/down) but mainly from a GUI. Yes.
Brett Kingman Awesome, exciting & intimidating new tech! Bit extreme for my blues junior but a guy can dream.
Great video thanks. Would you mind telling me how you did connect the boss Waza to your studio monitors? Thanks
Is iT possible to connect a Kemper head with no Powerhead through te waza tube AMP and use the waza as as the power AMP?
And so, what is the best way to make the connections?
Thanx, your sound is great.
I've just gotten a TAE. I'm sending the signal to monitors (via audio interface) right now; no speaker cab is connected. I've tried different amps, but all signals are clipping. There is no peaking on the TAE (it's green) and no peaking on the interface inputs. The impedance matches, I'm using a speaker cable from head to TAE. Any ideas Brett?
Gurrreat piece o gear......
Great Video as always Brett, just a quick queston about what format your Ownhammer IR's you loaded in and if there was any advantage/disadvantage to higher sample rates and 200ms vs 500 ms IR's, ie dropouts during live rig changes etc?
Cheers mate keep up the great vids.
Hey JJ. The truth is ... I have no idea. Attention to detail is something this 70's kid misses sometimes, I'm sorry. I think it accommodates the works but you should refer to the manual. For me, if it sounds good, I just go with it. Like an old-school amp.
Can I use the TAE for an attenuator & fx loop without hooking it up to my computer? I want a super simple (computer free) setup..... until I set it up for daw recording that is.
Brett - your amp expander is set at 16 ohms, but the Marshall cab you are using is 8 ohms. Do you know something I don't? I just bought this rig and was playing the waza at 8 ohms. Cheers.
Seems like adding so many digital effects to an analog signal puts you in the Kemper arena for just a couple extra hundred more.
yeah like 1500 bucks more and you still have your fake amp sims where everything sounds the same.
You said lets just hear the amp then adjusted the volume on the Boss? Does it act as a spkr atteuator and pass the signal thru or does it always go thru its 100 ss amp? In which case your not hearing " just the amp ".
It´s stereo out XLR´s (left and right). Does the path below send to both as a mono signal or do you need to use the out that goes to the real speaker to create a stereo signal.
Also is there stereo effects?
Hi I may have messed this in the video, but how loud should you crank your normal amp? Do you crank your amp up and then use the speaker knob to adjust the volume?
Thanks for your insights Brett. I think that Boss has knocked it out of the park with this one. A problem solver (at least for me)!
For those who want to understand the product concept better and why Boss developed this product, I suggest that you watch Andertons review from NAMM:
ua-cam.com/video/dogvzQNXTOc/v-deo.html
Looks like an amazing product for sure. Can you tell what's the voltage on it? Thanks!
I want to know the same thing. Theres nothing written on them just "AC input" so i'd like to assume it has a switching 120-240v input transformer. I need to know as im moving country soon.
You can achieve basically the same thing using torpedo captor and cheap class d transparent solid state power amp. Maybe you don't get all the features, but you can hook up external fx and mooer radar and end up with similar package for less. I tried that with my marshall and it sounded way better on low volume than the captor's built-in attenuator. Purists may disagree though.
Do you still use the Boss tube amp expander after three years? Have you moved on to something else?
Can you play along with your amp only along with youtube videos at the same time both through headphones?
Good question! - Us apartment guitarists want attenuation purely for this reason.
XLR out into interface with headphones should work. Should give you stereo L/R too.
Clean sound?
Could you use this with a Strymon iridium to go into a cab?
Late to the prty here, but this has a Class A/B power amp....what is powering this at 100 watts? (I am looking at using this for a Friedman PT-2.....making it totaly giggable...lol)
hows this compare to a Fryette?
This is really cool, not sure if it'll handle my Orange Thunderverb 200 though. Any idea?
no. max 150w
Too much.... afraid of it crapping the bed during sound check... and yes sounds like the katana amp....
Hey Brett, are you able to run the SV20h clean as you've done in your other video and then boost it's volume with the TAE?
What are your marshall amp settings?
