In an interview where he addresses and clarifies three of the key controversies about the destruction of churches and attacks on the Christian community in Manipur, whilst stating that there is an “undercurrent of religious intolerance” behind the ethnic Kuki-Meitei clashes in Manipur, the Archbishop of Imphal has said that the 249 Meitei churches in Imphal and the surrounding valley, that were destroyed in the first 36 hours (May 3rd/4th/5th), could not have been done by the Kukis because they were, at the time, fleeing for their lives. Archbishop Dominic Lumon said “other elements” did it and, when specifically asked if he was pointing the finger of suspicion at Arambai Tenggol and Meitei Leepun, two Meitei based organizations, he said “they could have done it” but added “we have no direct evidence”.

Catholic churh never have Churh on the basis of tribes or clans. All the faithful of Catholic Church, irrespective of their caste gather together in the Church for mass. The same church may offer mass for specific linguistics people in their own language. In context to Churches in the NE, Manipur has been a soft target drawn in the lines of ethnicity as compared to Mizoram, Nagaland and Meghalaya, where the community is more cohesive.
The plan to destroy the Churches in the NE, could be in the agenda long ago by the so called Saffonisation.
Tourism industry and all it's stake holders must be vigilant. In April this year, a friend from Shillong who operates in custom tours was sharing his uncomfortable experience with a bureaucrat client from mainland, who's special interest was only Churches. Post that the Manipur incident happened.

These Meiteis did not even spare a negligible number of Mizos in Imphal. They were chased out from Imphal and a lone Mizo handloom shop was also vandalised. Meiteis are not tribals, they haven't been living as tribals for years and years according to their claim. The Meitei people unified under a single Princely State, unlike their tribal neighbours living as separate small tribes under a Chief. The Meitei take pride in their Classical high culture and they take much pride to differentiate themselves from their Tribal neighbours whom they call 'Hou' in a derogatory manner. You are confusing a social structure with Race. Indeed Meitei and their Tribal neighbours are all same Mongoloid race and infact are very closely related considering they (Meitei, Naga, Chin-Kuki-Mizo, Karbi) all speak a particularly closely related branch of Tibeto-Burman languages, so for simplicity sake they are of the same Race but not all of them are Tribals. Just like some Mainland Indo-Aryan races are Tribals whereas some other are not.
It's rather comedic how badly these Meitei suddenly want to be Tribals after ages of looking down on Tribal people, all because of Greed so they can snatch Tribal lands.
ST/SC is a thing of Modern India( post independence), the British had nothing to do with ST. However I had once heard that under modern day India indeed the meitei were suggested to be part of ST category, but their Prince/King was offended by it and even spat on the person who suggested it, it was a Naga, i guess, it's a story I heard before but I don't claim it to be a fact since I don't have proof of it so don't quote Me on that. However We do know for a fact that the Meitei people always had a superiority complex over their Tribal neighbours and always took pride in being non-tribal.
I don't think the Meiteis are being pushed to the wall at all. They always and still do dominate the other societies in Manipur when it comes to sheer number, socio-economic status, Political power etc. Most of the development funds are spent on the 10 percent land which they live in. And indeed the capital region (which also happens to be a more hospitable and thus easier to develop part of the state) should indeed see more funds invested in it. But the fact remains the resource allocation is vastly unequal and the Meitei areas enjoy more development.
The way I see it, Meitei people with their Superiority complex are just jealous that these lower status tribals are slowly catching up in education and Jobs and also start to enjoy better life and thus prosper and also perhaps grow in numbers slowly. Also they just want to grab the Tribal lands for themselves because their Ancestral land in the valley no longer supports their huge population.
If the Meitei people were really afraid of being overrun by Kukis who they alleged as being 'Foreign immigrants' who also happened to be 'bad people' who 'rape and kill' and also happened to be the one and only society in Manipur linked with 'Drugs trade', then they should be very happy to support the Kuki's demands to separate themselves from the Meiteis, and thus ends all their headaches and nuisances, right? No, they would rather they get ST status and thus dominate all the smaller, more backward tribes than they already did, and also snatched the lands reserved for these tribals.
Meteis are indeed a Majority, the other communities are very much divided into tribes and sub-tribes and they don't really represent one Socio-Political unit, like the Meiteis. Consider the Kukis, who are, let's say, roughly 20 percent, they are not even a single tribe and instead are divided into several groups, and lumping this already divided 20 percent with other tribals like the Nagas to make it seem like it is an almost half-half split makes no sense when they are different groups of people with different political interests, case in point they even had their own conflict in the past sadly. And we see this very fact being used to their advantage by the ever-so cunning Meitei people in this conflict by targeting only the Kuki group and thus avoid confronting two enemies at once.
You seemed to be very enthusiastic with wanting the Meiteis to continue to trample on the Tribals, You kind of seemed like you hate to see the Tribals get a level ground to the Meitei. I think equity, or atleast equality is not in your interest, You just want your fellow Hindu Meitei people to be more superior to others unless you are already infact a Meitei yourself.
And No, the Kukis or Tribals have not 'encroached' the valleys at a concerning rate as you've claimed. Imphal is the capital and as such, a few Kukis and other communities would have to come to Imphal for education and Jobs, especially when a huge majority of the funds are allocated to it only.

Firstly, ST status is not something You grant to one community based on whether another existing ST community becomes more developed or not. Instead, it is based on whether that Tribe is infact backward and in need of uplifting and protection.
Secondly, ST is for Tribal societies, it is in the name itself. Meiteis are not Tribal society like I already clarified, they are currently enjoying benefits like OBC ,SC and EWS categories. If in some insane turn of events they get to be ST, that would be a very rare case if not the first time a society bags all categories of ST, SC, OBC and EWS.
Contrary to what you perceived, No, the Meiteis are in no way under threat culturally or demographically. They just want more land for themselves since their Kings only managed to secure the 10 percent valleys they are in, they took the most fertile and easily inhabitable valleys and never did care for the Hills which is far less suitable for developments, only now because of their own population growth and greed do they want to be ST so they can later claim these Tribal lands.
Like I've said before if the Meiteis were really in a threat as you've they claimed they would be very happy to get rid of this threat by supporting the separation of these Kuki threat into a new state, but that is not the case instead Meiteis want to have their share of Tribal lands.
And about conversions, it is the right of all Indians to practice the religion they want, and part of being a Christian is spreading the good news of the Gospel, and when You try to force Christians from practicing their religion by not allowing them to preach,You are infact infringing on their religious freedom. That being said it doesn't mean Christians go and force people to be Christians, it is literally impossible to force someone to believe in a Faith by brute force or coercion. You can only convince people. And if that person is convinced then who are You to tell that person which religion He chooses for Himself? !!. Might I remind You that it was Hindu Missionaries who were the ones who came and converted the Meiteis in the first place when they used to practice Sanamahism.
Read how Meitei Vaishnavism evolved and it's essence could be seen from the Manipuri dance, one of the 8 classical dances of India. It was the Vaishnavite missionaries who converted the meiteis . It was the Shaivite missionaries as well as the Shakta missionaries, who converted majority of meiteis into Sanatan. You didn't have a problem with that, did You?

In 1950 and 1951, despite a wise advice and request given to the Meiteis not to reject the Scheduled Tribe(ST) status by the then MP Mr Suisa, but to keep up the Scheduled Tribe(ST) status, they rejected it in 1951 threatening Mr Suisa never to repeat it to them to accept such low caste status again. Manipur became a state of India in 1972. After seven decades, the question of Scheduled Tribe(ST) status has surfaced again and the fight is on. It reminds us all, MP Mr Suisa truly loved Meiteis, and he was not wrong.

What is even more disheartening is that both the government of Manipur and Central Government have not done enough to protect the vulnerable people and their properties and now these people are in camps which are inadequate to accommodate these large number of homeless children and adults who are living in sub-human conditions. When will the government act with expediency instead of diverting and highlighting issues in other states. I am an alumni of St. Joseph's higher secondary school. It's sad to see our alma mater reduced to ashes. Even the St. Alphonsa convent was used by the meiteis for shelter and burnt down when they burnt the school and the whole kuki villages in Sugnu. We can see only through videos and photos of our villages and schools being burnt but can't do anything about it..
