The video of two Kuki women being paraded naked by a mob in Manipur has woken up people to the realities of the dire situation in the northeastern state - eliciting condemnation and questions on the BJP-led state and central governments’ actions to end the violence.
In a conversation with Newslaundry’s Shivnarayan Rajpurohit, BJP Kuki MLA Paolienlal Haokip spoke about the crime against women in Manipur, the central government’s actions, root cause of the conflict, the role of police in it, and the road to peace.
The BJP MLA from Saikot in Manipur’s Churachandpur district said he believes that prime minister Narendra Modi has “misplaced priorities”, adding that he and several other MLAs from Manipur have been still trying to meet with the PM. However, he added that he is still optimistic that only the central government can bring peace to the state.
Haokip said, in a war, rape and molestation are the worst of human rights violations, and show depravity. He detailed more instances of crime against women in Manipur, which were also highlighted by a group of 10 Kuki-Zomi MLAs.

I had the good fortune of meeting him, he dedicated himself to uplift the community. He is not like the ministers who are corrupt and money hungry. I say this with conviction because of the way he lives his life. No flashy cars, no expensive house/ houses. A plain old traditional tribal house where everyone is welcomed and the first thing he asks you is Boi, eipi thu hita, eiti kan kitho p thei d ham? which means means Dear, what happened, how can I help you? His family is also so based and grounded.

I usually steer away from politics and political debates etc but through out your interview I was hooked, overwhelmed and awestruck by the knowledge you possess ( about those islands in Pondicherry/Puducherry), your choice of words and expressions, your determination to fight for the well-being of your people and safeguard their rights etc. just gave me goosebumps. We have been there in your shoes, still struggling as a matter of fact. We became homeless in our own kingdom. I'm watching from California as I give thanks to The Lord my God Yeshuah that I was born in Fiji and came to adulthood in America, now am 66 yrs old. I have only encountered violence at the hands of an Indian whom I was married. Never threatened by Whites, Latinos, South East-Asians or others. I have traveled to 30 states be it day or night. I have gone to stores at midnight here, walked in ghetto areas, alleys ect without any fear. I still drive 6 hours to LA area to visit my daughter and stop anywhere for restroom breaks without any worries. There may come a time in future things may change since our govt is all corrupted but people are still mindful. I traveled to India and had to be very alert and a male to guard me. I was told over and over never go anywhere alone. Two trips in 1987 & 1994. What is a democracy good for if girls & women can't live free regardless of which people group they belong to. My grandparents were Indians from Punjab & Haryana. As a Christian I pray for India regularly since 1995.
