How to Bleed an ABS Brake System - Step by Step!

  • This is a video tutorial on how to bleed an ABS brake system. Air can get trapped up in the valves of the ABS system which can't be in the system for it to work properly. So we need to get that air out using a scanner to open and close the valves. I will show you exactly how to do that. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for the video. I let my Chevy Stepside sit for 6 years - the 350/5.7L engine fired right up! Love that engine even with 270k miles. But the brake pedal went to the floor. Topped the empty reservoir and tight pedal until powered up. Figured the ABS module was dried out. I don’t own a $500 module reader, so took it to Meineke. Thank you for confirming what I didn’t want to do!

Thanks my $125 Foxwell multi manufacturer scanner was able to walk me through it . The vacuum bleeder little tank worked but it's too light...I put a C-clamp at bottom. Bleed one and refill reservoir repeat. I actually never used the jar and hose method. Either had helper or used a vacuum pump.
My pedal was mushy after normal bleed...but I nursed car home after blew rear line so I must of sucked rear brake tank empty. I only had to cross two rural quiet intersections. Be safe.

You need to bleed them after youve stomped hard and actuated the abs to fail, then bleed them and test afterwords to see if that solved the intermittent failure. the dealer has a machine that tells the valves to open but that is not necessary.

Nice video! I've got a 2016 Silverado 2500 HD, I bought the truck new in May 2016. Every time I apply the brakes on the first push the pedal feels a little spongy but if I let go and reapply the brakes then it feels hard and no sponginess. Every time I went to the garage I'd forget to mention it and now 6 years later it still does it but I got used to it. My wife probably never noticed it because she never said anything about it. I guess I might have air in the system. Am I correct to assume that? I'd actually like to replace the brake fluid since it's 6 years old. Would I just follow this procedure till I see the new fluid come out of the hose? Thanks,

Hi! I been noticing a weird safety issue with my bmw f20. Whenever I braked hard, my steering veers to the right, an indication my left front brake is not functioning well?
A quick trip to a workshop ends up in both front left and right rotor and brake pad change.
However when the mech tried to perform a bleeding of front right brake, he said it was not bleeding well enough. After many attempts he decided to check on my abs pump.
He disconnected the line out from abs pump to front right, and upon pressing the brakes, little brake fluid seems to be coming out of the abs pump supplying to front right.
Is this a sure tell tale sign of faulty abs pump? Or should I carry out the wiring test as shown by you guys

The rear wheels are both easy to turn with the brakes pressed; the front wheels are barely turnable by hand, much tighter. I bled the brakes at all 4 wheels and no air bubbles anymore but the pedal is still spongy. Do you think it's possible that air is trapped in the ABS module? Or could it be something else? I own a 2020 Jeep Wrangler and I am having problems with spongy brake peddle
When I purchased the jeep brand new it had excellent brakes
The peddle was firm and quick to respond
Now after about 3000k miles I have lost the peddle and they are spongy slow to respond
I believe after watching your video that is may have happened after the jeep went into anti spin mode once while off road This is not a problem with just my jeep If you go to the JL Wrangler forum you will see that others have the same problem and the dealer is no help. They say its normal. IT IS NOT NORMAL AND I NEED TO FIX IT
I purchased a FOXWELL NT630 to perform the ABS brake bleeding like I saw in in your video with the Autel put it would not perform the individual wheel brake bleed with the ABS pump running
What it did do I think was open inlet and outlet valves and run the ABS pump so I did bleed the brakes several times opening the valves and running the pump
This did improve the peddle by 50% put I can still tell there is air in the system
All this to say do you know if the Autel will run an individual wheel ABS brake bleed like seen in your video on a Jeep Wrangler JL 2018 to 2021

What’s the sequence normal bleed procedure, then bleed abs, then normal brake bleed procedure?

    • @2carpros
      @2carpros  2 роки тому +2

Typically yeah. You'd bleed it, then if that doesn't get the desired pedal I'd do the ABS thing, then if it still feels weird, I'd normal bleed again. Thanks for watching!

I bought an Xtool A30 Pro, it doesn't instruct anything about which wheel to start with. I started at the right rear, put a clear tube full of fluid (no air) from the bleeder screw into a container with fluid in it. Opened the bleeder and ran the pump, no fluid moved in either direction. I did this on all four, same result. I bled the brakes again manually, still a soft pedal on start up. There's got to be something I'm doing wrong. I appreciate the help here, this thing is driving me crazy.

It's best to recharge your battery with a charger or get a fresh one. Really great video, thanks. Question for you: On my 2008 Mustang GT, I've upgraded the front brakes to a 4 piston Brembo caliper which has two (2) bleeders, an inside and an outside. During a normal brake bleed, I bleed the outside first, then the inner on each caliper. It seems to me that the scanner will not know or pick up the fact that I've got 2 bleeders on each of those calipers. Will it matter if I only bleed 1 of the caliper bleeders during the ABS bleed? And do you think it should be the outer or inner bleeder? After the ABS bleed, I would come back and do a regular bleed on the entire system again as I normally replace/flush all of the brake fluid more frequently as I track the car quite often. Thanks again for the great video.

I don't go offroad at all (it is a car not a truck) but a lot of times on the roads I get behind people who seem to want you to ride the brakes. These are the ones who seem to know when your transmission is about to shift and be a jerk making you stay close to that shift point rather than having a nice cruise down the road. My Volkswagen should have the fluid changed (flushed) in 2 year intervals or sooner depending on your preference. I know for those they say it must be done at least that frequently but don't all manufacturers specify a similar interval? Who is to say that the other brands are any different? That fluid is basically the same for most vehicles with some differences in formulation from one to another but for the most part are compatible with each other as long as it is not DOT 5 or some other odd fluid. The moisture that brake fluid absorbs can rust things in the brake system too. I cringe when I think about that being one of the most neglected fluids. It is one fluid that is NOT a life time fluid at all by any means!
