    Stuff like this has happened to me before. Bw have been so RUDE to me regarding my natural hair (not all, just some) and they are usually older as well. People need better self esteem 🙃

      Yea and this is just one story I have 🤣 but a lot of Black women have also been extremely kind and supportive and have demonstrated self esteem with their hair

    I had another black woman touch and lift my hair once at work. It was anew job and she was my line manager. When I protested and asked her why, she replied that she wanted to check it was my own hair. I was so shocked I made a formal complaint and was able to move departments.

      I’m so you glad you made this complaint. I felt hot after the first sentence because she was wrong!

      I don’t know why folks like to touch our natural hair even our folks (blk/brown people). It’s like you can read their mind because the way they stare. I’m glad you stood up for yourself because she was out of her element..👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
      God Bless

      She had also made some very unusual and intrusive comments so I knew it wasn’t going to work. Luckily it was a contract and they were desperate to keep me which is why b they probably acted so swiftly. I’m guessing she’d also caused some other issues before.

    I've had those types of experiences all my life to the point where I almost know when something aggravating is going to come out of someone's mouth. I can see their eyes tracing a roadmap through my strands. The "Is that your hair?" and "How do you get it to grow that long?" or the dreaded "Are you mixed?" not to mention the puke-inducing "Oh, you have good hair." However, I think these statements and questions are weird because I have what is understood as type 4 hair. It seems it is difficult for some of us to understand that all hair types can be styled in a WnG, and with proper hair care, it will thrive.

    • @FoAdunni
      @FoAdunni  8 місяців тому +1

      It stinks you’ve had those experiences. I think people also struggle because we just don’t know a lot about each other’s hair. Hopefully as education improves our interactions can improve

      @1GoldenBreeze thank you for saying "the puke-inducing..." That is how I feel every time someone tells me that "Oh, you got good hair." It makes me sad that black women are still saying that. I even said to someone "does that mean you have Bad hair?" so that they would realise how wrong those words were and she said "Yes, I have bad hair." I was floored and sad. Colonization really did a number on us, smh.

    It’s been quite sobering over the years to see that the deep self hatred and self consciousness we’ve had around our textures, DID NOT go away with the natural hair movement. That really makes me sad. I also felt like my hair “blossomed” when I found the right techniques and I know how much work it took to get here, so I would feel pretty upset if someone were to just dismiss all that work like that!

    • @FoAdunni
      @FoAdunni  8 місяців тому +2

      Sobering indeed and welp I know as I continue to progress people will be dismissive. It’s life.

    Most of the time people seek to discredit others because they don't like what the person has to say. People also conflate relatability with credibility, which is very problematic. Relatable people lie all the time!!! In any case, people cling to relatability because they really just want assurance that things can work out similarly for them. So if there is any variance, they simply can't trust it. Very sad because they end up missing out on some great people and great wisdom.
    For me, just about everyone I follow about hair is completely "unrelatable" to me. Even if we have similar hair characteristics, we're not the same age, everyone is not greying and everyone is not dealing with hair loss. My hope and prayer is that people can recognize truth irrespective of the messenger.

      I have the same hope and prayer! And I’ve even been challenging myself lately to watch naturals with hair nothing like mine and I’m learning and enjoying myself. People don’t know what they are missing.

      Dr. Fo I’m 70 and went natural in 2020 because I felt this is a time when I can be patient with my hair. My experience has been so rewarding and challenging because I love to encourage people to take on the journey. I have gray hair and many times people say to me how did you get your hair like that (and they always want to touch your hair) it doesn’t matter what nationality. I get compliments on my skin and hair because I was blessed to have a distinguished look. I’m a WNG girl with a salt/pepper crown 👑. So I can only laugh at you experience and say wait until you go gray it’s going to get more interesting and a blessing….. I love the story….
      God Bless 👏🏽🙏🏾

      @FoAdunni missing out on A LOT! Often better explanations, different techniques, etc.
      Also the eyebrow comment...never heard of such a thing.

    Yes girl, I remember this event. It was definitely awkward and shocking lol.I do think the nuances in the conversation we have about “hair typing” are important to discuss because projection of our insecurities comes out in a variety of ways and is evident. I can’t recall a story where I’ve had similar happen to myself but I have had curiosity from people around my hair before.

    • @FoAdunni
      @FoAdunni  8 місяців тому

      Right! It was wild. I’m happy you witnessed it first hand the type of interactions I was telling you about. And I like curiosity. I’m excited about more of us understanding each other’s hair.

    I really enjoy that you choose a PhD topic that is so personal to you, your community and also so fascinating and fun. Also enjoyed the “based on my research” part. You better speak on it ! Very good content.

    Sitting here in my chair, I am so thankful that I came across your channel! You were the first person who I encountered, told the truth about natural hair and explained how to love my hair and manifest its beauty and properties. All I know is when I wear my WNG, I feel like royalty and I see others wanting to be able to “crossover” like me. I still am miffed when asked, how did you get your hair like that? If they only knew that we are just as beautiful with natural hair as we are with straight hair!
    Your hair is looking gorgeous. You’re my role model! (Funny because I’m much older 😂😂)

    Hi, thank you for your video. As a middle-aged woman and being natural for 10 years as well, embracing my lovely grey hair. I understand when people can't relate or they don't understand your journey. I had a family member tell me when I first started my grey process that I should color my hair blonde like her😂. I just politely told her no, that is not for me, and I wasn't coloring my hair anymore. Growing up, I never had a good feeling about my hair because of the negative talk about it before getting relaxers as a teenager, and then it would break off. Within the last 10 years, I have grown to love, embrace, and take care of the hair God has given me. Blessings to you🙌🏿

    I was at church and someone that I've known all my life (so they knew that I didn't have trouble growing my hair) after I went natural was talking to me and felt very comfortable running her fingers from the nape of my head almost to the crown, which I felt was an attempt to feel for tracks (weave).

    • @FoAdunni

    Haha you told this story so funny but I was low-key fuming.... from the time I heard "what is this?" Cause I could relate, as of recently I've been really embracing my natural hair & people I know are fr avoiding making eye contact with me😂. Guess I look too different from when I wear the weave down my back. It's such low vibrations 🙄

    • @FoAdunni

    Man I know the feeling of flipflopping along the good hair/bad hair binary. You get all kind of side ways comments growing up then you finally learn how to do a little style suddenly its "oh see if i had _your_ hair maybe I could go natural". Huh? And then you will still get people coming for you hair for not being very "good hair". Lol, it is what it is.
