- It's not every day you get to see sights like these. The weather may have been a mixed bag, but the Scottish Highlands still managed to make a STRONG impression on us. We already loved Scotland before this day trip thanks to our time in Edinburgh, but after spending some time up north, with incredible landscapes all around us, our appreciation for the country grew even more. We spent time at the Hermitage, Loch Ness, Glencoe, and several other places -- and everything we saw in between was just as beautiful as our destinations! It was a truly special day, in a truly special country. 🏴

I'm really fortunate to have been to quite a few countries across the world, and for me, Scotland reigns supreme. As soon as you said you felt grounded I knew exactly what you mean. I have an issue with disassociating and sort of coasting through life, but the month I spent in Scotland travelling the cities and the highlands was the most at peace I have ever felt. The people, the wildlife, the natural beauty... It is without a doubt my favourite country on Earth and I go back whenever I get the chance. Luckily I live in England so it's not difficult at all, but your video has reminded me to book a trip and I'm so happy you had the same experience that I had!
That line, "was the most at peace I've ever felt" made me feel so proud be Scottish. As a chef in Skye and Perthshire I've had some great nights with the tourists..✌️🏴💚

In an energy rich country,with Hydro, Wind ,Oil and Gas,people still cannot afford to heat heat their homes!
Post winter,By the ttime you return,a lot of our elderly will have died.
The British goverment have cut energy grants to our Pensioners and large sections of our community will suffer through fuel poverty.This is the dark side of Scotland where people from warmer climes profiteer and make decisions on our behalf.
Hopefully you will return to our land when it is self determining and treating people in a more humane way...

Really good to see you guys get out of the vehicle and go for a walk around the hills and Glen's. Typical Scotland weather. But I sounded like you had fun. You should always do more of the things that make you happy!

Great video, thanks for sharing. I've lived in four countries and travelled to 47+. Scotland is one of the best places on earth and I'm happy to be moving back there soon. You only saw a fraction of what there is in Scotland. It's only the size of Maine but there is so much beauty and history there, literally thousands of castles, ancient monuments, hiking routes and 94 inhabited islands. You MUST go to the islands. Each one has its own character and beauty. I recommend Barra, Coll, Tiree, Colonsay, Jura and Raasay. Skye is awesome but a little too many tourists these days. Please come back to Scotland and enjoy more of one of the most beautiful places on earth! ❤

That's a cracking day tour you found there. You started near a location referenced in Macbeth (Birnam Wood) and came back via The Kelpies near Falkirk. That suggests you also went past Stirling Castle, but perhaps in the dark. Anyway, glad you got to see some of the rugged, natural beauty of Scotland and appreciated it.

I think it's a shame that so many tour companies head from Edinburgh up the A9 and tour anti clockwise.
Driving north from Glasgow or if coming from East going west past Crianlarich, the drive north over Rannoch Moor and through Glencoe is unbeatable.

Personally I enjoyed Storm Jocelyn. I was a student again for last academic year through in Glasgow. For those days I didn't have to commute through just watch video lectures instead at my leisure. So I had a few blustery wanders around a relatively quiet Edinburgh.
Do the New Lanark World Heritage site with walk up to "Falls of Cylde" Central Scotland" but stunning..... This part of Scotland doesn't get sold enough tbh.
As an addition to enjoying Scotland try listening to some of the modern take on traditional music .I know that sounds a bit contrary but its like a progressive folk is probably the best way to describe it. All the bands and artists are on here at YouYube so you can give it a try in some down time. Artists and bands that will lead you to many others....Manran.......RURA .. ...

I am glad you will be back in Scotland. I don't know if your motion sickness is on boats too, but hiring a boat to travel the length of the Caledonian Canal is a wonderfully slow and beautiful way to see the central highlands. (And I got the Twilight reference!) Also, the weather changes every 10 mins a lot of the time. I have spent many happy hours on the west coast just watching 'the weather' sweep in and change, it's endlessly fascinating.
No such thing as bad or good weather, just weather 😉

We had wifi, from what we remember, and the hotel itself was nice. Admittedly, we didn't spend too much time there, but it was comfortable and clean.

As you found out, the weather in the Highlands can change very quickly. My worst experience was when my pals and I went up Cairngorm (a mountain) on the chair lift in June many, many years ago (about 50!). The weather was pleasant at the bottom but half way up, we started to notice snowflakes floating by. In these days, the chair lift was a 2 seater and open to the elements. We were wearing T-shirts, flared jeans and soft shoes. There was no escape. We had to sit there gradually turning into snow men until we reached the top by which time the mountain top was white! Fortunately, there is (was?) a building at the top (a cafe? I can't recall) that we could run to where everyone was crammed in waiting for the snow to stop falling. Yes, it can be chilly even in June! 🥶😂
Oh my! 😮 A bit of a rough time there for sure. But then, it seems the rough experiences turn into some of the best memories looking back. Makes for a great story as well 🙂
We'll be sure to pack some emergency parkas if we're ever knocking about the Highlands in mid summer 😂

The harsh winds and cutting weather in Scotland makes you appreciate the roof over your head the warm bed and comforting Scottish food .In our spoiled modern lives we tend to forget these feelings .
We definitely felt EXTRA comfortable in our hotel room at the end of the day! 😊
I've got as far as Brian (eloquently) describing the landscapes so far as ethereal and then grounded while at Loch Ness. I'm smiling because I assume you hit Glencoe and Rannoch moor after this and redifined the word ethereal to yourselves.

Not sure if you've been to Stirling on your trip, can have a meal there up at the castle in the old coach house, its nice. Wallace monument and stuff, about 10 minutes south from there is Falkirk where I live, not much to do in the way of night life, yet here you can see a couple of thousand years of history going all the way back to the old wall the Roman empire tried to build here, leaders from the battle of Falkirk (one of the battles depicted in the film Braveheart) are burried just outside my house, next to William Wallace best friend Sir John de Graeme lays there as well, the stones are original from 1298 later inscriptions added, It's the birth place of the company that makes Irn Bru, not a big place and doesn't take long to view it all, though its often missed by people who visit in favour of the more well know tourist attractions and it comes right up into the modern day with the worlds only rotating boat lift, The Falkirk Wheel which was never built as a tourist attraction but people want to see it and now it is.
I believe we passed Stirling Castle on the way back to Edinburgh at the end of the day. It was dark, so we didn't make a detour, but it MAY have been another stop if we hadn't lost so much time at the start of the day. (Could be wrong about that, but I believe it was a proposed destination that fell through since the days are so short in January.)
Love following your adventures. Have you ever tried anti-nausea acupressure wristbands. I used to get really bad motion sickness and they helped. I would put them on about 10mins before I travelled anywhere. You put the bands on your pressure points. Also gingerbeer is good as well 😊

Love your channel but as a born and bred Scotsman I have to disagree with you here. I respect your opinion but imo the Scottish Highlands are vastly overrated. For a start with no ‘mountain’ over 1400m they aren’t even high. Just glorified hills, really. My own personal benchmark to qualify as a _real_ ‘mountain’ is at least 3000m. Secondly, no trees. To me they are just bleak. Almost grey. You don’t have to travel too far from Scotland to experience _real_ mountain majesty. My own European favourites are the sublime Pyrenees. Easily more sublime than the Scottish Highlands on every level. Thanks for the post, though! 👍 🏔
As another born and bred Scotsman I mostly agree with your sentiments. I've never seen the Pyrenees, but have seen the Swiss Alps and there's no comparison. I've also been to Aspen, Colorado and once again they've got us well beaten in terms of both scale and beauty.
The bleakness aspect that you pointed out depends (at least to me) more on the weather than anything else. On sunny days it's not so apparent, however if it's overcast or raining then the feeling evoked can be downright depressing.
At the same time - and without wanting to get all mystifying on you - there is definitely a uniquely soothing 'atmosphere' to many parts of rural Scotland that I've not found elsewhere. I actually prefer the Scottish Borders countryside and the Isles of Arran and Bute to the more celebrated northerly tourist haunts.

I think a big part of it is it’s Scotland with all the mythic/historical connotations that implies. If these ‘highlands’ were anywhere else, I’m not sure anyone would care. 👍
High mountains don't beat beautiful mountains. At every corner. Don't mention Harry Potter. We were here long before the cameras.
@@undersoundproductions1915 It’s partly to do with height. You get the sublime when mountains are topping out at 3,000m+. It’s just a fact: you can’t tell me, on any objective view, that the Scottish Highlands are more spectacular than the Pyrenees, to use my example. You just can’t. And, for me, the Pyrenees _are_ more beautiful, precisely because of this monumental majesty. I repeat this again: if the Scottish ‘Highlands’ were anywhere else, no one would notice. People notice them not necessarily for themselves but because they are wrapped up in a Scottish mystique.

I have found very few people check the weather when they aren’t at home. I live in Florida and work for Disney. Every single day I’m calling an ambulance to haul some Brit to the hospital because they didn’t think it would be as hot as it is. They don’t drink enough water, they drink too much alcohol, they don’t dress appropriately, and they don’t take breaks.
Don't think we ever said we were expecting tropical temps and sunshine from a Highlands trip in late January. We were simply commenting on the weather we encountered on the day, and how it surprised us how quickly the weather could change up there.

Duh I'm an idiot ,I've lived in Scotland all my life and have driven all those roads and hundreds more but saw very little in the way of sightseeing ,,now that I'm retired you've opened my eyes to all the stuff I've missed ,road trip ( with many stops ) now being arranged
We're all guilty of overlooking things in our own back yard. Sometimes those are the easiest things to miss.
Scotland's all right for scenery, but its a bit bleak and nowhere near as spectacular as people claim.
It is also a seriously filthy country in terms of having an enormous litter problem and a pipulation that has no self respect.
