The way you and Anish describe Arjun's play reminds me of how strong players will go for riskier and often objectively innacurate lines against much weaker players. This makes sense to me since Arjun spent most of his 2700s in open tournaments against these far weaker players. What's crazy is that since he's doing it against top level players now (recently Sarana, Andreikin, Vidit), he likely believes himself to already be far stronger than them. He's playing like they're 300 points weaker than him, not 75 -100. Crazy stuff.
Yes, but he doesn't go for risky or slightly worse opening to throw off his opponent. He just straight up blunders in the middle game and opponent don't see it. I believe if he was playing against any top 15 player, he would lose this game.
Arjun took lot of risk in this game. It was very frightening for his fans like me. He was lucky. But he deserves that luck. What we see is Arjun does not make mistakes during the end games. This is something remarkable about Arjun. I wish he reaches 2850.

I was really impressed looking at his career growth; A ferocious player on the board and a gentleman off the board.
I was so close. I saw all the right ideas. That you can capture on d6 twice and pick up the rook on c8 with qa8+ but I missed the bishop guarding it so i technically miscalculated even there. I also saw blacks idea was Qb2 followed by rc1 so white doesn't have all the time to sacrifice. I even looked at b5 but thought it did nothing hahaha just couldn't put it all together. Man! That tactic for white to win was so profoundly insane. You deflect the bishop with the pawn, remove the pawn from 7th rank by sacrificing the bishop and make your opponent choose whether they want to give up the queen or get checkmated.
The game of chess is constantly evolving. First the winning in every position is pawn to b4, but now it’s pawn to b5. At some point, it will likely become b6. But for that we will have e to wait. 😂
Wow most players are intimidated playing Magnus and trust sometimes even when Magnus makes a bad move Seems to have happened here with Sarana and Arjun exciting game many missed opportunities thanks Agadmator
"Suboptimal according to engine" is not suboptimal, because you're playing against humans. If you make a mistake engine will certainly punish you, however humans can't always, since he's 2800 chances becomes even lower as player wouldn't think objectively. If you can't punish that then obviously, you're going down. This was happening, earlier against lower rated players, now even to top players. Of course he'll go down here and there, as it's a risky way to play.
If you knew why'd you bother compare a 2800-rayed player against a 3500+ rated software? That's an ELO difference of 700+ points mate! Imagine comparing Magnus to a 2100 ELO player! You just did that !😂
