Antarctic Star 400 Cigar Humidor Review & Seasoning

  • Today I'm reviewing and seasoning a 400 cigar refrigerated humidor from Antarctic Star. This one is supposed to come with all the bells and whistles - an internal humidifier, heating and cooling capabilities, solid cedar shelves, and plenty of space for storing precious cigars. But how well does this thing really work? In this video, I will take you through my entire process for testing and seasoning this humidor. Here is the good, the bad, and the ugly!

    I talked to RWflame about 2 months ago. I told them if they want to sell their product to get it in the hands of Tim. They said they would look into it. I'm glad they got you this unit. It was too expensive for me, but as far as the market, you can't beat this unit in my opinion. Great video!

    I have got the bigger version of the anartic star shortly after watching this review. Mine is about the size of a average dishwashing machine. Had it about 2 years without any issues. I so far only had one real con with it even though it was minor but for me it was a prefrence was the paper filter wicks. I personally would like to replace them at least every year with a new one, but unfortunatly you cannot buy replacement ones and it is very hard to find ones that are even close to the right size. So you are pretty much at the mercy of cleaning them in distilled vineger and using them until you cant. Other than that it is a great unit. Two years later and I still enjoy the sticks I get out of it.
    Thanks for the review.

    Great review. I have the larger version and I have a question.
    Have you deciphered the instructions on calibrating the temp and humidity?
    I figured out the humidity. With the display locked, you hold both temp buttons down for 5 seconds and you can enter the humidity correction. I can not figure out the temp cal. I have emailed the company I purchased from but they were no help. there are very few reviews on this humidor and I'm at my whits end. The humidity and temperature were about 5F / 5% off from calibrated hygrometers.
    Also, just for fun put a hygrometer at the top and the bottom. With mine the bottom is about 2-3% higher RH and the humidity fans cycle instead of running on a PWM curve. This spikes the humidity every time the fans run. This is not seen in the unit display.
    Overall I like mine but it runs on the cold side since I can't calibrate the temp. I have it set to the max of 72 and it is about 67 by all other thermometers.

    • @CigarsDaily
      @CigarsDaily  2 роки тому +4

      Yeah, the instructions seem to indicate that you'd calibrate the humidity in the same way as temp. I think I got lucky that this unit didn't need any calibration, and was accurate to within 1% of the extra hygrometer that I put in there. I wish I had a better answer for you. But as I communicate with the manufacturing company, I'll try to get some better info for you.

    You never test with unwrapped boxes or single sticks. I would think that would be the real test, is it holding humidity so your stick aren't dry or soggy.? And a quick question, would having the boxes with the lids closed not affect your sticks? It seems to me the boxes would absorb the humidity and it would take a while for the humidity to get through to the inside.

    Tim, I have three questions for you .
    1. When putting in boxes. Is it better tp remove the cellophane from them to allow more moister to get to the sticks ?
    2. Flavored cigars, would you put them in with non-flavored cigars ? Or put them in Tuppadors by them self's ?
    3. Can you disable the beeping ? My Refrigerator beeps, The dishwasher beeps at me as well as the washer and dryer. Like my wife.
    Oh Cost ...How much for this bad boy ?

    • @CigarsDaily
      @CigarsDaily  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks for commenting Jeff. This one is going for $720 right now, which is expensive but not overtly expensive compared to the functionality and pricing of other competitive units. When putting in boxes, I typically don't remove the cello. I think cello offers a bunch of amazing benefits for your collection (ua-cam.com/video/VAm7aRu_V78/v-deo.html). The only thing to consider is that more packaging slows the transmission of humidity. So I might remove cello if I received a box that was already over humidified. Otherwise I would leave everything in original packaging. When it comes ot flavors, I still recommend seperating them from the rest of the stash. Depending on how many infused cigars you have, tupperware is a great option. And as far as the beeping goes, I found no way to turn it off, but it only seems to beep when the door is left open for a prolonged period of time, so personally I'm not sure I would ever want to shut that off.

      It really depends on what you're looking for. If you want the most affordable unit to get the job done, get the Audew (they don't heat in the winter and they require additional humidification). Between this one and NewAir, it depends on how smooth of an experience you want. Both have heating and cooling functions with internal humidifiers, and classy shelves. This unit is more affordable than NewAir, but the shelf sliding action isn't as smooth.

    I like this humidor. I was gonna buy one. How much is this model, where does it come from? I have to wait until your testing is done bc I don't want a damaged unit. What temperature does it hold if the humidity level is 74 and reads 69? I'm looking at a big order but I have to get this right. With this I can preserve my more valued and occasionally smoked cigars in the coolidor and my daily cigars can be in a desktop acrylic tube.

    • @CigarsDaily
      @CigarsDaily  2 роки тому +2

      This model is currently $720 (down from $1k). It's expensive, but I think it also offers qualities that other comparable units don't. The temperature and humidity are dialed in separately. As far as the humidity reading, there is a way to calibrate if the humidity reading is off. But in this video I set the humidity to 74 only for seasoning, and then reset it to 69% after it was ready to go. I found the hygrometer to be pretty accurate right out of the box.

    I bought the 24" from R.W. Flame. Similar issues with temp calibration or lack there of. The temp and humidity are way off and when you adjust the humidity it doesn't convey the change on the screen (original number doesn't change). There can be up to 15% humidity variation from the bottom to the top of the humidor. There is also a defrost mode that kicks on every 3 to 4 hours on mine, this drives the humidity into the 80% for 30min periods. It is nearly impossible to establish balance with this humidor. There is also the drain tray on the back of the unit that I have to empty using a small tube and suction cup or the tray will overflow. You can't remove the tray. Nothing about this humidor works appropriately. I've read the instructions many times and have contacted the number on the instruction manual for assistance (they will only speak with you if you purchased your unit on amazon). R.W. Flame doesn't return your calls or emails. It's a 1000 buck paper weight that will ruin your sticks if left in too long. I hope this is just an issue with my humidor and not the standard quality control for their units because there will be many brothers of the leaf unhappy!

      From the experience I've had with these, manufacturers typically don't recommend wiping down the shelves. I think this has to do with how well they hold their humidity.
