    The crazy thing about Matzek's 7th inning: only one time was contact made and it was a foul by Pujols. That's total dominance.

      Effed with his head; he was looking for the slider. Betts is lucky this was the last game of his season. He'd of been messed up for a week afterwards otherwise, second-guessing himself.

    Minter and Matzek really stepped up this year. There were times when both were really bad, and Minter had his struggles in the past, but they really came through.

      Playoff Minter is just built different. He’s been an absolute beast past 2 postseason runs. 20 postseason innings he has 31 K’s with a 2.7 ERA, but over half his runs came from having to pitch 3 innings in a WS game.

    Mookie was sitting all over the slider that struck out Pujols, and Matzek just climbed the ladder slightly enough even an emergency swing couldn't foul off. Such a perfect sequence.

    I've seen some pretty damn good Braves bullpens, so I won't say this is the best...but damn, these guys put good hitters in the walk-in freezer, and just locked the door on them. Makes me wish we'd have got Venters, Kimbrel, O'Flaherty, and Wagner to a place like this.

    • @RightCenterBack321
      @RightCenterBack321 2 роки тому

      The closest we got O'Ventbrel to this was in 2011, but we obviously blew it. Even if they had made the postseason, Kimbrel and Venters, especially, had been used so much during the regular season, there was no way they could be called upon the way Jackson, Matzek, Minter, and Smith were. Their effectiveness would've been truly questionable.
      O'Flaherty had been used less, so he would've retained his effectiveness, probably. The Braves would've probably relied on him, Linebrink, and Sherrill increasingly in high-leverage situations.
      Just my two cents.

    • @MrBendylaw
      @MrBendylaw 2 роки тому

      @@RightCenterBack321 Well, we'll never know. But I'm not sure overwork would've dulled Venters and Kimbrel that much. Those guys were sooooo filthy. Venters in particular. That high 90's sinker, when he dropped it just right, was the single most brutal pitch I've ever seen. Absolutely unhittable. It's an apocryphal story, but apparently Wagner told Venters, when he was giving advice to the rest of the bullpen, that he didn't need to worry about anything but just getting that abomination in the strike zone.

    • @RightCenterBack321
      @RightCenterBack321 2 роки тому

      @@MrBendylaw Great as Matzek was, 2011 Venters was still better than him.
      I think the proof is in the pudding - Kimbrel definitely lost effectiveness towards the end of the season, while Venters still retained effectiveness, but he was clearly reaching his limit by the end of September 2011.
      The Braves had some great bullpens. I even miss the Soriano-Gonzalez-O'Flaherty bullpen of 2009.

    • @MrBendylaw
      @MrBendylaw 2 роки тому

      @@RightCenterBack321 Venters actually beat Mariano Rivera's cutter on a list of filthiest pitches. Aside from Dickey's knuckler, in his 2 or 3 prime seasons, and Jared Fernandez's hard knuckler, which was actually a bit too hard, I've never seen anything move like that at that sort of velocity. A friend of mine caught O'Flaherty in the minors on rehab, said his stuff was absolutely sick. Said he couldn't imagine hitting him. Kimbrel's knuckle curve was consistently called a slider, because of it's velocity. Really good bullpen. Perfect mix of righty and lefty, power stuff, different looks on pitch type and delivery.
      Edit: that being said, Matzek is still the Patron Saint of Atlanta bullpens. There are lesser saints; Moylan, Gryboski, Spooneybarger, etc. (I'm avoiding closers because they're overrated), but Matzek is, in fact, the 'Destroyer of Hope'.

    A lot of Braves fans have wanted both Minter and Jackson's heads the past few seasons. If it was up to the fans both these guys would've been gone years ago, but you just don't drop relievers with the stuff they have. Relievers are fickle.
