Dr. Sten Ekberg usually when I wake up, I stick my finger to see if I should take ashwaganda to lower my cortisol because if my fasting blood sugar is above 85-90 I know my cortisol is high. My A1C is 5.4 or under.
Now I’m doing this breathing while I meditate 2x’s a day. You confirmed cortisol affecting blood sugar! Thanks so much for this video!

When I was in High School my father encouraged my siblings and I to commit to one semester of a routine which consisted of 1 hr a day or maybe more. It consisted of a cleansing diet, meditation, affirmations, and a number of breathing exercises. After that semester my grade point increased dramatically. I am now 76 and from time to time practice these techniques. I thank you Dr. Stien for your complete approach to health, your knowledge, and your sharing such vital information to help so many that are searching.

Pranayama is the ancient Indian system of breathing which address holistic health of a person. Pranayama has several systems of breathing including relaxation and it is nice to now see doctors and scientists advocate this millenia old practice for better health. Readers can look up a trusted Yoga teacher, or a website to learn more about the different methods available in Pranayama, sometimes even for specific ailments.

J Rose the trick is to keep doing it even when it doesn’t work, until it does. You have neural pathways that become automatic, you are basically rewiring them so that breathing soothes the ANS and that becomes your first response to anxiety in stead of flight fight and freeze. I practiced when calm to notice how it felt in my body to breathe and then when I’m anxious I breath until I feel the same as when I’m calm. Doesn’t mean I never feel anxious but I recover faster and have less panic attacks. Enough to ditch my anxiety meds and the side effects.

(ha ha on moniker, I only noticed when writing it here).
I'm not sure your hypothesis works very well. Some of the biggest guys you see in an orchestra are often in the brass section; particularly low brass that requires a lot of air. (Although I have heard that playing flute requires a lot of air, perhaps as much as tuba, which is quite counter-intuitive).
Maybe it's just that brass players are medicating with alcohol before performances? ha ha.

Fantastic information and presentation as always, and this video's information goes to the core of my entire life. This information should be part of the education requirements in school, along with all the other food education that needs to be updated. I have always been an extremely anxious person, and I live with PTSD triggered by the first Gulf War experiences ( US Air Force Vet). I lived my worst PTSD symptoms in my late 20's after the military, and when I was 39, I felt shortness of breath and chest pains, which required a stent on my LAD artery. Three years later, I needed another stent. Shortly after that, I was on the path to a high of an A1C of 9.9.
Last year, I decided I needed to take control of my health for once and for all long term.
On September 5th, 2018, I started exercising and cutting down on carbs. Shortly after that, I discovered your videos and the benefits of going Keto for total health, including diabetes, and inflammation.
Your videos have educated and motivated me to keep on track towards a healthier and happier life.
I've been on Keto and building my intermittent fasting since October and exercising 4-5 days a week following your aerobic guidelines. I now fast 18 hours per day, and As of today, I've lost 23lbs.
More importantly, my A1C last week came back at 5.8, and I feel better than ever. My triglycerides are lower than ever at 59, and my HDL is higher than ever at 49. (I'm still on atorvastatin 40mg per day,)
Your video on these breathing exercises is precisely the new habit I need and want to develop.
    Thank you, Dr. Ekberg!

Thanks. This ties in with a 1970s article in Readers Digest which sought to promote deep breathing exercises. They suggested that many desk-bound people lost some breathing function by chronic shallow breathing. As you have mentioned in other videos, there are several sets of muscles involved in breathing and a desk-bound job reduces breathing to just the work of the diaphragm. Like you, they suggested deep breathing starting with breathing in while raising your arms to expand the chest cavity to maximum. Then they said to exhale slowly whilst moving into a crouched position. They suggested doing this for about 10 minutes a week.

Dr. Ekberg, your explanations are miraculous, neuroplasticity in breathing - wonderful. A note: the first results for me - keto for 14 days - 5kg down, I am on 69kg, so quite ok,going down to 66. And I really feel limited "chemical stress" Thanks to the diet and moderate exercise. Wonders, the body is truly clever, and dr. Ekberg very informed, and so likeable. THANK YOU.

Your videos are so good. I have been working on trying to slow down breathing because I now have high blood pressure and had just learned breathing could be contributing. I am a shallow breather and have decreased intake with a deviated septum, but understanding what is happening with all these body processes is so fascinating and helpful. Thank you so much Dr. Ekberg!!

No one needs to demonstrate to you how to do the breathing. You are already doing it... just slow it down. Preferably, sit down in a relaxed manner. Inhale (slow breaths in) for 5 seconds, and then exhale (slow breaths out) for 6 seconds. Practice this for 5 - 10 minutes twice a day. You can even do this standing up or laying down. Do the breathing exercises in bed before sleep to help you get a good night's sleep. Both ways help you to relax. You can do it!

Hey, I watch a lot of your videos. I just felt like I should tell you, I watched this one this morning and I have been thinking about the content and implementing it all day...deep breathing when I feel myself getting that rush rush feeling. It caused me to stop and think: I often eat to get rid of that feeling...not necessarily because I'm hungry, but rather to calm myself down. All this time, I could have been using breathing techniques! The breathing got me waaay further in the day to my meal. I am so grateful. Thank you. ~Long time cortisol victim, Sharon :)

Last night I tried you breathing exercise. .... It wasn't easy because I was so focused on the breaths I was doing some crazy breathing
Anyway this morning I woke up feeling much better
I checked my ph level ... 7.5, checked my weight, lost 3 pounds, checked blood sugar 211, I know the sugar level sounds high but I have been waking up around 300, I have been doing keto faithfully
This explained so much .... As a health insurance agent I am very stressed just at work plus other situations best not spoken about
I think the fight flight does explain things .... There have been several times I have needed to escape and refused (I'm often pushing my emotional strength ) often to the dismay of my body .... I refuse to be broken
I'm a bit of a wild child you know the type "a fly by the seat of your pants" type of gal
I don't give up and I don't give in ..... Well unless I know I'm in the wrong, then I apologize and take it
Lucky to have you as a guide :)
