5 Medicinal Plants And Herbs You Can Find In Your Yard

- Hey guys in this video we take a look at and discuss 5 medicinal plants that you can find in your yard. There are a lot of medicinal plants that grow in and around lawns and this video does not cover them all. We'll take a look at plants like Red Clover, Wild Lettuce, Jewel Weed, Lobelia Inflata, Yellow Wood Sorrel, and the Broad Leaf Plantain. Some of the medicinal plants are common and well known while others are more obscure. The first medicinal plant we look at is Red Clover with its unique flowers and three leaflets. The Red Clover is a good plant for purifying the blood and to be used with other supporting herbs for respiratory ailments, colds and flu. The herb is rich in isoflavones that show anti-oxidant activity as well as estrogen like compounds.
The Wild Lettuce family has a lot of varieties and the can all be used interchangeably to calm the nerves or as a sedative. The plant has medicinal use as a painkiller as well as some topical uses for things like warts. Named Lactuca for its lactating properties, this milky latex is responsible for its calming actions on the body. Another plant, the Yellow Wood Sorrel is popular for its lemony flavor but many may not know the plant is also medicinal. High in vitamin C content the plant was used in colonial times to treat and prevent scurvy. It has other medicinal uses such as being added to flavor cough syrups and to help ease sore throats imparting a delicious citrus like flavor wherever it is used. The are several varieties of wood sorrel and they can all be used interchangeably.
Lobelia Inflata is commonly referred to as Indian Tobacco because in the 18th and 19th centuries it was used as a tobacco substitute. This small and delicate medicinal herb also has use as a sedative and pain reliever, especially when used with other herbs. Lobelia can also be used to increase the effectiveness of other herbal treatments, and can be used with another plant we talk about, Plantain, to help draw out poison from insect and spider bites. The Broad Leaf Plantain and Narrow Leaf Plantain are two plants high in mucilage, which makes them a good medicinal plant for use as an expectorant. The commercial source of Psyllium is derived from a Plantago species and these two species can be used the same way. The mucilage is not only soothing to the throat and lungs, but also lowers cholesterol in experiments. This herb contains anti inflammatory compounds and antibacterial compounds which makes it good for use as a poultice for bug bites, pain and inflammation. The astringent quality is good for cuts and you can even put the whole plant in bathwater to provide relief from sore muscles.
Jewel Weed, or Touch Me Not as it's know has two varieties but both are used in similar ways. The main use for this plant is as a poison ivy rash treatment and some will swear by its effectiveness, though science has not proven this yet. The Jewel weed can also be used in conjunction with Plantain to provide relief from poison ivy rash and sunburns because of its juicy stems. Jewel weed absorbs water later in summer forming very large bumps on its stem. These bumps are highest in juices and therefore provide the best relief.

I love videos like these. They make me want to go outside and just start eating like a free buffet
The videos are great at plant identification and uses. Being short, quick to the point, packed with information without a long-drawn-out intro is very important to me.
Thank you Lori, I'm glad you're enjoying the videos!
@@TrilliumWildEdibles how do you use the plants?
Which parts?
Chiaseed
@@jquest43 there are a couple of books on wild eatables he reviews. I just found this channel and an on getting at least one.
"edibles"
"Oh, won't you be my neighbor?" Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise!
This is superb. I believe God put a cure for everything on this earth. Love these few plants and purpose. A text book of health in our backyard. i grew up with these purple clovers and others on the farm.thank you.
This video could be highly dangerous since it encourages people to use garden plants as medicine. Someone could mistakenly identify toxic plants as the ones shown in the video and end up poisoning themselves......
Good info! Some of us live rurally and have many of these plants that are not exposed to herbicides. I have used the jewel weed. It commonly grows alongside stinging nettle. We were bringing kayaks from a river and didn’t see the nettle. I will never forget how bad it stung my legs. Jewel weed helped so much. We have been using our dandelion. I made blossom tea and we had buds and leaves in salads. People need to stop killing everything! Someday, they may need to eat it.
There was a friend of mine a very well-known astrologer named Jacob Schwartz I'm Suburban Philadelphia Pennsylvania who used to say a weed is just something we have not yet discovered what it's use is yet .
Not someday . . . TODAY!
The stinging nettle you encountered was probably the most beneficial plant you encountered that day
If you want to also research about stinging nettle. It is great for seasonal allergies and hormone regulating for men. Just boil the young leaves and drink them when you start getting an itchy nose or sneezing because of spring allergies. I used to keep it in my fridge in a jar when we lived in a place where it grew.
Clean effect doesn’t work here, let Nature stay Natural. And the chemicals sprayed goes in your water eventually
Red clover is very useful in helping to promote breast milk production . My ex wife had issues producing milk after giving birth to our son and this helped .
Sorry there isn't an herb to save marriages
@@zissler1 that was a sorry comment.

@@JuniorFarquar lol that comment isnt relevant.
Did she drink it as tea?
I’ve just planted some red clover and chickory in my garden. 😊
I have both types of plantain growing wild on my land.
The world is healing in their own backyards.
Yes and we never knew it!!!
God planed it that way. Dont bother telling me he's not real cause I'd be dead allreay if he wasnt....
We have been for since ancient times we just get dumber when we get controlled
@@huhh2k yeah - and were told that these beautiful healing plants are nothing other than weeds.
I thank God for social media and thank you UA-cam! Ezekiel 47:12 Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for healing.
Hey Josh, good to review this post. Have you ever put together a video on how best to use these plants; a demonstration of teas, poultices, smoking, tinctures, etc? You know, the practical application of herbal medicines?
agree, love the presentations but would like to know the procedure of using, such as eating raw, cooking, drying, making poultice salve.....ect
THANK YOU! Everytime I watch this I learn something new about somebody I'm helping.
I use to pull off the purple clovers and eat the ends of them when I was little.
I was wondering if you can just pick it and eat it. Is it bitter tasting.? Please respond. Thanks.
@@debbierabe1756 I know I’m a little late to this but if your still curious nearly every part of red clover is edible. Its leaves and seeds can be used in various recipes, but the widely preferred part of this edible plant is its flowers. The round red blossoms have a sweet, bean-like flavor. They can be eaten raw as an edible garnish in salads and other dishes. I’ve also heard of people using it in tea.
Great video! I have most of those in my yard and have eaten the sorrel. It's delicious. Another nice thing about the red clover is that it is beneficial for garden soil because it adds nitrogen to the soil. It's often used as a cover crop after harvests and tilled under before the new planting season.
Yes, clovers are very valuable to creating a healthy soil ecosystem. White clover adds trace minerals as well as nitrogen, more clovers the better!
Don't eat/chew/swallow oxalis if prone to gout...oxalic acid crystals are what precipitate into the joint, most commonly the great toe due to gravity
Very interesting. I look forward to learning more of what you have to teach. I thought the presentation was excellent! Good work.

Haven't seen this little plant in ages. As a child we found in the woods and gathered a few to put in drawers with our folded clothes. Such a plesant smell.

I’ve been eating a lot of these for most of my life, started as a kid because it tasted good. 😂 now I feel a lot less crazy.
Lol. Same here. Was eating this stuff as a kid becuase, quite honestly, I was in the woods all day long as a kid and would get hungry. These plants worked for many reasons. To this day, I rarely get sick, and I mean rarely.

When talking about plants, I think it would be a great idea to also tell whip parts of the plant are edible and which are not. And some tips as to how to use them. For example if it is leaves, if you can describe how the leaves are used for medicine or for cooking, that would be really helpful.
