    The plant you pulled up and discarded at the beginning is Prickly Wild Lettuce. I have both varieties in my yard too and both can be used to make the pain killer. They are at their peak for medicinal use, after the blooms start to fade. The only real advantage to the prickly variety is that it blooms much earlier and therefore can be harvested sooner.

    When I make my salve with plantain, and other herbs for healing, I dehydrate the leaves and just break up a bit with my hands and infuse in Avocado oil for at least 6 to 8 weeks. The herbs must be dried, you cannot do this with fresh herbs. Then strain all the herbs of the oil (since at that point all the benefits of the herbs are now in the oil and can be thrown away) Then add the oil to melted bees wax and Shea butter, or any butter like that you prefer, but can just add to the wax only if you want.

    Thanks for a whole new list of medicinal plants to research. Living in the city, the weeds don't have a chance to grow with all the spraying/mowing constantly going on so you are very fortunate to be able to have access to such an abundance. Yes the warm weather is coming and can't wait to get my indoor plants outdoors. Of course there will be more challenges when that happens until harvest. Have a wonderful weekend my friend...

    Nut grass or nut sedge is also medicinal and edible. I have enjoyed the fruit (nut) my entire life and I’m 52 years young. I know that it is medicinally beneficial to men. That is all the knowledge I have about Nut Sedge, but I am of the mindset that we need to share the knowledge no matter how little we know it may be just enough to get the attention of someone who needs it and just doesn’t know it yet! Thank you for sharing your knowledge Mrs K. Have a great weekend and God bless.

    I have to recommend the thornless blackberry Prime Arch 45 because the erect canes make it easy to pick and maintain. I trim the canes at six feet so the fruiting sideshoots will be produced at a reachable height.
    Lastly the french use chervil like parsley. Google says the Romans called myrrhis because its aroma is like myrrh.

    I've got little spots here & there where I let the weeds grow, but I mow everything around the house & septic field to help keep the ticks down..
    We've got 1/3 less lawn than we started with. We also got rid of a lot of junk pines near the house & given the last couple seasons of wind shears, it was a good idea given how many toppled in the neighbor's overgrown, forested area. We love the fleabane & so do the dogs because we've never had an issue with fleas, only a few ticks throughout the season though. The guineas took a lot of them out last year, so that's been great.

    • @Latebloomershow

      Definitely a great reason to keep guineas! I just can't keep up the garden, the house, the website, the channel and the house and the cats to take on more animals. Wish I could! So the fleabane keeps fleas away? I've kept it around the house. I hate ticks!

    Nutgrass: you have to pull them out before they develop three leaves. By the time they have three leaves, the nut has developed. Also, if the version you have is sedgegrass, the nut is edible, I believe roasted.

    Enjoyed the extensive tour of medical vs weeds. I also have most of those plus wild violets. This year a very short weed that looks like dead nettle is everywhere here. It might be the Asian one that wrecks the soil. That would just be my luck! It's all over the raised beds too! Well, let me back up; I do, indeed, have Wild Lettuce, but it is FLORIDA BLUE Lettuce. How Florida lettuce go to Ohio, I don't know, but I dearly wish I could find the other kind! And we have both the narrow- and broad-leaf plantain varieties, but the broad-leaf one is what I use. I put a plantain poultice on my grandson's foot last summer after a bee sting, and he had no ill effects from the sting. Went on like nothing had happened. We have a huge colony of them, and my husband mows over them weekly, but I can still easily find whole leaves, because it grows low, but fast.

    Kaye, the canes that do not have flowers could be last years canes that produced fruit or they could be your next years crop cane. Permacane is one of the names and primocane is the other. I get them mixed up. I just cut back the canes that are red in color because they are the ones that are done. Please do not be so afraid of a tick bite. The only time you need to panic is if you don't find it within 3 days. I am pulling ticks off of me and my dogs constantly. It is just important to check each evening before bedtime. Purple clover is good for hormonal imbalance. Your lawn looks lovely and very healthy!!! Lastly....all of your grasses and lettuces and "weeds" (I refuse to call them that) are edible to eat as a salad. You do not have to tincture everything.

    A couple years ago I collected tons of wild lettuce to make some of nature's morphine. I ingested gobs of the stuff and didn't feel a thing. I mean, like one Bufferin tablet gives more pain relief than that? I don't know. I never knew wild lettuce was for pain relief. It was just another wild green I always collected in the spring. Kaye, you better pick you a mess of them plantain greens and wild lettuce and make you a pot of greens. I use the Sam's Choice uncured turkey bacon from the Walmart to season my greens, and some beef tallow. Of course I spice them up too with some salt and pepper, a bit of onion, dash of garlic powder, and a few sliced up grape tomatoes for some color. I'll have them for breakfast with some soft boiled eggs. I always look forward to spring greens and boiled eggs. You got any Poke on your property? That big wild onion you got is awesome! Boy, I'd but cutting that and saving it for seasoning so many things. I love onions. I mainly eat red onions, but I loves some spring onions too cut up in some wilted lettuce salad. I hope you managed to have a little patch of grass for your grass man to cut. Maybe you should just sow a ton of wild flowers on your whole property and just have some nice nature paths cut through it. LOL The birds, bees, and butterflies would love you for it.

      I don't know about eating too much wild lettuce. I have about half a cup portion to go with my three soft boiled eggs. BTW, I heard you talking about Arugula too. I put my arugula in the blender with a jalapeno, fresh lime juice, and some garlic and make a fermented green salsa that goes with everything. I put it on leaf Arugula salad as a dressing too. I have enjoyed your video. I have the last few years allowed my yard to flower with my weeds. I have a number of plants that you have mentioned. I weed wake around my neighbors yard fence so I do not offend them but I Keep my flowers, dandelions, etc... until they seed. Hate my poison ivy . When seen, I have to get it out because I forget where it is. I wonder if you could put a link to a phone app that I can trust. I would love to know what I have. Thank you again. God bless.

    If you get stung by a bee/wasp, look for a piece of fresh plantain, immediately chew it up, spit it in your hand and put it on your sting, will take a away pain in a few seconds.

  • @camilleolsen
    @camilleolsen 6 місяців тому

    I have almost identical weeds aka medicinal plants in my yard, minus others you have. I haven't heard you mention wild carrot or chickweed but those are everywhere here as well as cleavers. Cleavers and wild carrot leave little velcro like balls all over your clothes and socks. They are the (flea)bane of my existence 😆

    I’ve used many plant apps and they don’t seem to be very accurate. My friend’s app said spotted spurge was purslane! It doesn’t even look like that! Do you have one that really is accurate?

    • @Latebloomershow
      @Latebloomershow  6 місяців тому

      I use PictureThis. I look at the plants again and again, and if I think it's reading the photo wrong, I try another picture. I think so far it's been pretty accurate. It has a lot to do with the photo you take. I hope that's helpful.

    I have always wanted to plant wheat or oats but how do you keep the weeds from choking out the crop without spraying?

    • @Latebloomershow
      @Latebloomershow  6 місяців тому +1

      Well, same for a field of heirloom corn. You till it, plant it and hope the corn outruns it. Start with a clean slate, scrape off all the existing weeds. Hopefully you have a field without the worst stuff. Plant it and hope it outruns. I learned this from my heirloom corn grower and grinder my first year. He said chemicals will kill heirloom grasses. Obviously, it is available to buy so farmers have found a way, but I assume it's this, till, plant, and hope it outgrows competing weeds. I'm growing this wheat for ground cover. Let me know how it goes! You can probably find videos on UA-cam on this. Blessings! I want to grow sorghum, but birds and deer are my concern.

      No, I don't have any stinging nettle. I wish I did. I bought a live plant last year from Sharon's Natural Gardens, but it never got planted in ground and died in the pot. IDK if it will come back this year. I use it to sting my arthritis on my hand. I know it is so good for you. I was told what I got rid of was also another wild lettuce.

    Unsolicited advice is worth what you pay for it....but, my advice, determine a boundary for your a medicinal weeds to grow in, and mow ruthlessly outside of it. Otherwise you are setting up your garden beds for soon to be unmanageable with weeds everywhere. Like a good artist, you need to know when and where to stop or you'll ruin what you've worked hard to create.

      So true! And I’m trying to get the mower back over here but he’s just covered up we’ve had so much rain that he only has a day here and there to do all of his yards and so now everything is all grown up! And I did do that last year I just had two areas but now they’ve exploded and there’s gonna smother out the plants that I put in there also.
