Yes that is his father. At the time of recording this video his father ( a kidney donor) had been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney failure and was dying as no match could be found.
Both being ex military the not your son etc comment was I believe said to James by his father when he was being deployed to Yugoslavia as part of the UN forces.
After this recording this video the crew were all in tears and his fathers comments were along the lines of “what you crying for, I’m still alive”
Following the release of this song it reached a distant relative in Australia who came forward and was a match for his dad and he had a successful transplant, so in a real way this song really did chase the monster away.

I didn't know the story the first time I watched, then I learned it, and now the video hits even harder. I can't even imagine the emotions going through Blunt as he sat there and sang it to his father believing he would likely die in the near future.

@@AjayMomma. No. The song was written and released while his dad was in stage 4 kidney failure. And he finally got the surprise donor. But the video was not made then. So he wasn’t ever singing infront of his sick father here. This was after he received the new kidney. I do believe this was the 1st time his father heard it though.

@amyaeschbach3581 actually @AjayMomma is correct. He was indeed singing to his dad in the video knowing that his dad was dying. And yes it was because of this video that they found the distant cousin who provided the kidney he needed. All 100 pct genuine

His sister wrote a letter to her father when he was dying from stage end stage kidney failure, James adapted it for this song. Shot it in one take. Time Warner wanted him to use autotune, he told them no. This song actually saved his dad's life because an extended relative heard about it and donated a kidney, pretty much at the last minute. And yes, even the most hardcore men who don't show emotions who have lost a parent break with this song. It broke me this morning. I call it my therapy since I keep stuff pretty bottled up. Yes, that was his father, that was before he got his transplant, so he was pretty much saying goodbye to his father in this song. The entire crew was in tears during the filming of this, his father looked around and asked 'Why is everyone crying, I'm still here.'

When my Dad was in his last stages of 18 years of Parkinson's Disease, I literally had to chase monsters away...his nightmares were so awful. Sitting with him at night, being there when he woke up screaming, and being able to comfort him, I felt honored to be able to serve him, the way he did for me as his "favorite" and first daughter. This could have been a song written for us. He was my best friend and still after over 20 years, I miss him more than I can express. Beautiful song.☹😢💔

My husband passed away 6 years ago from cancer. I took care of him in our home, I never expected to use my hospice care experience on my 45 year old husband. We have 3 kids, two with special needs and the majority of the time they were my only support. Our son was only 11 at the time, he's exceptionally bright and very compassionate. The day before his daddy passed he asked me if I would hate him. When I asked him what he meant, he said I used to pray to God to make dad better, but now I ask him to take him. (Cancer had ravaged him terribly).
I told that meant that he loved his daddy and didn't want to see him suffer anymore. He would have to tell him he could go, because he was only hanging on for us.
I stayed outside the bedroom door and listened as he told his father that he could go, he would take care of me and his sisters and that we'd be okay.
The next morning, as I was cleaning him up I heard him sigh. For months the only sounds he made were moans of pain. I didn't have to see his face to be sure. There was so much relief in that last breath.
I had to get a job not long after, and it was a struggle for a while. My son wanted to get a job but of course he was too young. On his 15th birthday he handed me a work permit and already had a job lined up. He's worked that job faithfully for 2 years now. He helps me a great bit, but i have to make sure he spends money on himself and still has time for fun.
He's a good young man, thoughtful and kind, slow to anger and still very compassionate. Next school year is going to be split between his senior year and early college classes. I think his daddy is very proud of him.

James Blunt made god cry and a kidney donor was found for his father. Its sincere because he thought he was going to die when he recorded it. the lesson is to say the things we should to those we love while we have time. He is a brilliant composer musician and performer with an almost unique perspective for a song writer ' he was in the UN peacekeeping force in Bosnia try the songs No Bravery and then Carry you home. I don't think two human beings of a different generation ever looked so like each other as James Blunt and his father, both gentlemen looking good. How brave of his dad to appear in the video.

James Blunt's father Charles, himself a kidney donor, was diagnosed with stage four chronic kidney disease. Blunt wrote "Monsters" to "express his feelings about his father and his illness, almost as if it's a touching farewell to his father". In an interview with Good Morning Britain, Blunt said:
Really that has been an amazing moment. Because when you realise your father's mortality it's a great opportunity to say the things I'd like to say to him. So I have written a song called Monsters for him.
In the same interview he made a plea for type O kidney donors to step forward. In January 2020 MSN reported Blunt's father had been scheduled for a transplant.
The music video was filmed in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom, and it was directed by Vaughan Arnell. The music video features James Blunt and his father Charles Blount. The video focuses on a close up of James Blunt's face as he sings the first two verses and choruses of the song, and then switches to a wider angle showing himself and his father sitting at a table while he sings the final part. Throughout the video, Blunt is visibly emotional and tearful.

He fought for the military in Kosovo in the late 90’s, and when he was getting ready to deploy he was saying his goodbyes to his dad and his dad said, “You’re not my son, and I’m not your father; we’re just two grown men saying goodbye.”
Recently his dad got sick and needed some sort of a transplant. He was on the verge of death when James Blunt wrote the song and at the last minute they found a donor. Saved his dad’s life. So when he went to record the music video he wanted his dad involved.

❤ you will be glad to know this song saved his father's life. The older gentleman in the mv. His dad was dying and non of his immediate family was a match. A distant relative saw the song and donated. So James dad survived. His dad was his hero and a professional soldier. Before becoming a singer James followed him into the army and several active tours. Not only James but the whole crew were crying. When they got into the car his dad confused asked what all the crying was about. James knowing his dad and to make him laugh, and with a soldiers black with laughter.

James Blunt can break you like few artists can. Two others of his that are just as much of a gut-punch are 'Carry You Home,' about a real-life experience while he was in active service in the army, and his more recent one 'The Girl That Never Was' - another one, sadly, written from personal experience.

This is so raw and pure in its emotion and sincerity that it just guts you.
I lost the love of my life suddenly to a very vile and aggressive liver cancer 3 years ago this month (May 2021). He was my partner in all things for 14 years. He took on a ready-made family of 6 children...the majority of whom were teens along with my youngest..who had just turned 6 and is Autistic and Epileptic. He did so without hesitation, caring for us all. He was our provider, our protector, our stability and my soul. My middle son developed a very strong bond with him and when he passed, he lamented that he never took to calling him "dad" when he was alive because he was every bit a father to him as a biological one. He now calls him dad every time he speaks of him.
This song resonates so much with me and my son's dynamic with his step-dad and I'm sure it does with so many other young men and their fathers or men who raised and cared for them as my boyfriend did with my children.
Such a gorgeous song. I bawl every time I hear it.❤

Emotions can be sneaky buggers. I find myself still missing my dad nearly 10 years later, still a quite raw feeling even now.
But is good to have an outlet and an occasional private sniffle as it resets your balance, which in my job is quite important. I have the unhappy, but incredibly important responsibility (occasionally) to be given the task of knocking on a stranger's door, in uniform,at whatever time of day and night to tell them that a loved one has been killed or passed away, with as much humanity as you can,and to answer questions and assist as best I can......it stays with you a bit.

It's good to cry once in a while. It's good to make yourself feel, really feel sometimes. James wrote this song for his father who at the time was battling stage 4 chronic kidney disease. The video was watched by a distant cousin of James who came forward and turned out to be a perfect match for a transplant. James' father underwent a successful kidney transplant in 2020. The words "I'm not your son. You're not my father. We're just two grown men saying goodbye" are the same words James' father told him before they both were going into combat as if trying to prepare themselves if something were to happen. Both he and his father served in the British Army. James Blunt is the greatest songwriter ever! He writes what all of us are thinking, feeling. And no I will not apologize! 😏

Pain and or pleasure is part of our being, one must not deny either, it shows that one is a real man / or woman, with a purity of the heart not the analyzing mind !!!

My mother is Spanish, my father was Algerian Kabyle, he died from cancer. We connected more as adults when my parents separated. He died proud of me and I accompanied him on the last journey right to the end. This song really hit me hard when I heard it, it really said a lot about the best you can do about being father and son.

Lyrics and the story make a song.... I have a lot of admiration for James Blunt. His music style isn't what I listen to, but his songs are beautiful and the fact that the emotions are real and raw speak volumes.

Oh No, I can´t stop crying , my dad passed away when I was very young, no time to say goodbye like this, but it made me think of my mother and how scared I felt because I knew her time was coming, I missed them both every single day. The same way of crying as if I´m hearing "Amor Eterno" from Juan Gabriel. Thank you Arab man for your reactions they are unique.

Extremely well put 😁 His father was a kidney donor, so only had one kidney. At the time of James singing this song his father was very ill with stage 4 cancer of the kidneys. After James released this song a donor was found he received a new kidney in 2020 and spent a year in isolation and is now doing well 👍🏻😁🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

“Monsters” was a heartfelt tribute to his father. The emotional track reflects the deep bond between them and a touching farewell. In the music video for “Monsters,” James Blunt sings directly to the camera, his eyes welling up with tears...The video is so powerful because sitting beside James Blunt is his real-life dad, Colonel Charles Blount. who was a former cavalry officer, battling stage 4 chronic kidney disease. The song captures the raw emotions of facing mortality and saying the things one wants to say to a loved one before it’s too late 💗 I can never get through this, without crying.......... *Real Men Do Cry Darling* 💗
