    Last year we had the youngest defense in the sec and it showed. Sophomore’s get bigger faster and stronger just over the summer. Add experience and we’re much better off. Our offense wasn’t the main issue last year. We lost 3 games just because our secondary couldn’t stop anyone on 3rd and 10-25. Just on defense we should avoid 2-3 stupid losses.

      There were times where the offense wasn’t the issue. But the situational play calling by Napier absolutely killed drives and momentum. Let’s stop ignoring that.

      Outside of the first offensive sequence in the last 6 games, we were something like 7 for 31 TD verses drives. That is abysmal.

      Agreed. The offense wasn't the problem. When the defense can't get the other team off the field, you lose more than just the other team scoring points. You also keep your offense off the field which limits the points per game. We played more freshman than any team in the country last year. These freshman are bigger and stronger now like you said and they have experience which was obviously lacking last year. They also have something incredibly important many don't take account of and that's depth. Personally, I think the defense will be better but it will take the 2025 season before the defense catches up to the offense in talent. Having said that, I think Florida has a chance to win no matter what team they play if we can get some production on defense. Give us a defense with a heartbeat ... and something other than a bunch of freshman ... and Napier wouldn't be on the hot seat this year.

    The play calling this season must include getting the ball down the field. 60% of mertz completions were at or behind the line of scrimmage. Last year Mertz didnt have the weapons. This year he has the receivers the running game is good and the offensive line is better. The offense should be better
    The defense is the question mark in my opinion. Are the Gators going to improve enough on that side of the ball to win more games. Only time will tell.

    • @MichaelWinter-zv8yk
      @MichaelWinter-zv8yk 12 днів тому

      Maybe Mertz doesn’t read the field well or have the arm strength to go downfield? UF didn’t have that problem with Anthony Richardson. Remember the FSU game when Pearsall got behind the defense and Richardson found him? There might be a reason that Mertz is “Check Down Charlie” and it probably isn’t the play calling.

    • @richardjohnson9702

      @MichaelWinter-zv8yk 12 днів тому

      Always an excuse…we saw Mertz play…he’s “Check Down Charlie” He has a high completion % because he never “goes for it.” It might be due to the perception that he turned the ball over too much at Wisconsin and he was focused way too much on not making mistakes. But UF isn’t good enough to pound the ground and control the ball . I don’t know where UF ranked in passes further than ten or fifteen yards past the line of scrimmage, but I bet it was near the bottom of college football.

    Gotta follow Shane Matthew’s idea - throw deep 4-6 times a game. In fact, send 1 or 2 guys deep practically every play just to stretch the D vertically - to open up seams, etc. and to make it credible,my you have to toss some balls long. Even if the OL is suspect, you can still design some long pass plays.

      We have more WR speed this year than last year. We can go deep. Lagway rolling out has a gun that can go deep plus he is a run threat.

      If UF’s counting on a true freshman, Lagway, there’s zero hope that UF will be over the 4.5 wins Vegas has them at. You’re talking about Lagway? I guess you don’t watch college football much, do you? Tell me about a true freshman QB that’s played well. Until then, enough of this nonsense about Lagway.

      Haven’t you figured out by now that Napier makes the decisions? Guess what? Napier has NOT changed ANYTHING since the day he arrived in Gainesville. NOTHING has changed! I have supreme confidence is saying that Napier thinks he’s done EVERYTHING correctly and he thinks the Gators are a good team, and, in his own own words, even an “elite” one. When addressing obvious special team snafus, have you ever heard him give the slightest hint that he thinks there was a problem? It’s time to take the blinders off and start to believe what you see and hear. Like Trump’s a criminal moron, Napier’s convinced he’s done everything perfectly and he’s never going to make any adjustments to
      his “plan.” What that “plan” is, I have no idea, unless it’s to maintain mediocrity.

    Why is UF’s offensive line going to be better? It’s Deja vu all over again. We heard the same last season when UF brought in FOUR transfer offensive linemen. Was there a single one who played well? Ow we’re hearing the same propaganda that the offensive line will be better. Why? Austin Barber is a projected starter who sucked last season. Damien George is a projected starter who sucked last year. Guess what? George changing positions doesn’t suddenly make him a good player. He’s supposed to be better at guard, a position he’s NEVER played? If that’s true, why wasn’t he a guard last season? There’s two transfer tackles. Why are they going to be any better than George, who this staff thought was going to be a good tackle? UF had a staring guard, who didn’t suck, Richie Leonard. transfer. UF appears in good shape at center, but there are five spots on the offensive line, not just one. Sometimes the simplest answer is the right one. Could it be that Napier is poor coach and his staff reflects that?
    Touting UF’s running game? Why is Montreal Johnson still at UF if he’s a great back? FSU’s Tre Benson left early for the NFL. Why didn’t Johnson? Especially since RBs have only so much tread and they , normally, don’t have careers that last over five years. I’m particularly jaded when I hear this propaganda since it’s usually nonsense. NTW, UF is looking at something that hasn’t happened since 1938. See if you can figure out what that is.
